Interesting that you should mention that. The song “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits caused a lot of controversy for using the word “faggot” in one of the verses:  
See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup?
Yeah, buddy, that’s his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot, he’s a millionaire
 
Given the fact that the song seems to be from the perspective of an older white working class man bitter about musicians making more money than him, I think that line should be excused. Clearly Mark Knopfler isn’t actually saying it as himself, he’s getting into a character and providing biting satire.

I was about to be mad at you for almost bringing my man Prodigy into this but I’m just gonna to stop my saltiness for this.
 
This is not something new for me, a lot of rappers had already talked about this including 2Pac. Sometimes they bring up this to woke people or just because it rhymed with a word.
