Cosmic census finds billions of planets that could be like earth

Lets talk space. The data from the sadly now crippled Kepler satellite has been compiled, and it’s looking rather interesting. The most recent estimate for earth sized planets is sitting at around 40billion in our galaxy…and it’s estimated that there are countless billions of galaxies in just the visible universe. Try wrapping your head around that, the very idea is staggering to behold.

So, what does this all mean? It means that, in theory, there could be trillions of not only habitable worlds…but inhabited ones. We could be living in a universe that is teaming with life.

Here I sit, typing on a lap-top, on a site dedicated to cartoon ponies. We are but a speck, upon a speck, upon a speck in the grand sea of stars that ebbs across our night sky. A single pair of eyes looking up, with countless trillions looking back down. What a wonderful universe we live in.

So, thoughts? Lets talk space, aliens, hyperdrive, sci-fi tech, etc.

I really do think there is alien life out there somewhere. It may just be some primitive animal or plant but even so it’s something.

I don’t view humanity as a unified whole (because it isn’t one, no matter what the humanists say), I think certain groups will do fine in space.

If there is intelligent life out there, I wonder what they would think of humans and the multiple governments and socialites we have. Would they frown on the use of money? Would they be against having separate governments? Would they use us humans as an example of what not to do?

If the natural world on our planet is any indication than I’d say hierarchical social structures are probably very common. Along with diversity of idea withing a sapient species. The latter of those ideas of course is solely based on our own species so…

well the possibility of truly alien life is a real one. For example the bugs in Starship Troopers or the Buggers from Ender’s Game (although the latter was more about the fact that they could not communicate with us and vice versa)

If there is intelligent life listening in on us they either find us amusing or they’re going, “dafuq?”.

Personally I just think the radio waves and that we’ve been putting out into space haven’t had enough time to reach anyone of sufficient technological advancement for them to have enough time to respond. Intelligent life on earth took a billion years to evolve. Now let’s take into account how many stars there are in the galaxy alone. Now let’s assume that every star does have a solar system. Even if there’s 40 billion earth like planets in the galaxy if you crunch the numbers the chances of someone being in our backyard are minimal. Even if another intelligent race has heard is it’s still going to take another hundred or so years for them to respond and way longer for them to ever travel to the earth.

The chances of us being neighbors to a type 3 civilization with faster than light travel are astronomically small.

There is actually an interactive software on the internet where you can zoom around the galaxy and see the observable universe as a whole. It was neat program, but I can’t recall the name of it.
