There’s a pernicious effort to spread the myth that FDR’s New Deal worsened the Great Depression. Articles like this one use the rhetoric that because unemployment in 1939 was 17%, roughly 1% higher than in 1931 (before FDR was elected, when unemployment peaked at 25%), the New Deal was a total failure, and it cites Henry Morgenthau’s less than correct quote from May 6, 1939.
We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work… . I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started… . And an enormous debt to boot!
