Related images

There is now a small button on image pages, just to the left of the info icon on the top metabar.
 
Click this button and you will be rewarded with related images to the one you were just on.
 
This function is based on related tags between images as well as a subset of the favourite data. There’s obviously some tradeoffs we have to make between accuracy and performance, so it’s not perfect, and we’ll be continuing to tweak and adjust the function in the coming weeks.
 
If you see particularly good or bad related images, please link them in this thread, preferably also thumbnailing the source image for ease of comparison.

Here’s one oddity I noticed: This brings up some major epicness, but for some reason it also brings up images like (explicit!) >>903779 and >>526758 (merged), and I don’t really know what they have to do with the original >>739465. I haven’t faved either of those two, so if faves are used, the connection must come from someone else’s faves.

Yes, the faves used are a randomly sampled aggregate from a source image.

Hopefully this gives some older images a bit more presence when using it.

Question - how many images will “related images” bring you to? And are they arranged in order of most relevant to least?

That would be nice, considering that dupes can no longer make their way to the top rankings. This might be a better alternative.

Yes, images are sorted most relevant to least, using a tag term partition/boost and TF-IDF relevance scoring.

Related images to , a SFW commission I recently uploaded and one of only two Philowiscious shipping pics on this site (afaik).
 
What I expected: The other Philowiscious pic (also SFW), some non-shipping pics with both of them, some pics with only one of them, maybe some other SFW ships and the occasional NSFW inbetween.
 
What I got: The other Philowiscious pic, ALL the Spike ships, ALL the porn and the first other pictures with Owlowiscious or Philomena somewhere after page 50 (if I didn’t miss an earlier one). At least most pictures were, in fact, monochrome.
 
I can see how it happened (the “straight” and “interspecies” tags, not enough likes and favourites, the lack of closely related pictures…), not complaining about that, but the system obviously needs some adjustments.
 
I’d suggest to at least increase the weight of rating tags, so a safe picture doesn’t get 90% explicit results.
 
Increasing the weight of character tags would be a reasonable second step, but since we don’t actually have designated character tags…

Rating tags are unweighted. In the original system I designed they were weighted, however.

I get some NSFW results from >>953152 with Derpibooru Explorer too although not as many as the official related images search. Mostly low quality sketches. No single image with Owlowiscious or Philomena though. I guess this has to do with few of those tags and the users who have favourited the image.
 
It is generally hard to come up with a reliable method for finding related content for unpopular content as you cannot use collaborative filtering techniques. You could just use the tags with some weights but then you’ll likely end up with very much the same recommendations for many different unpopular images.
 
It seems that the method for related images search doesn’t end up enforcing ratings very rigorously and you should just use filters:  
First NSFW results at 10-12
 
Weighting the rating tags could be one solution to enforce ratings but there are cases where some overlapping is desired. Particularly when bordering safe/questionable, safe/semi-grimdark, semi-grimdark/grimdark and questionable/explicit. I don’t think there are many cases where the related images should overlap from safe to explicit though.

What does it mean when you watch/unwatch a tag?

Not really on topic, but: your watch list is just a list of tags you’re watching. As with other lists, a watchlist can include both simple tag inclusions as well as complex filter queries. Matching items will show up in your watched images list as well as on the homepage. Think of it as an inclusion filter to build your own custom slice of booru alongside the global lists and your filters.

I only just discovered this feature from the icon. Holy crap, it’s awesome!

Is it really a problem? If someone did a series of shipping pics that went from SFW to NSFW, I’d like the related images to show the whole set (as long as I can see NSFW images in the first place).
