Starlight Glimmer Appreciation Thread

To me Season 8 was kind of the “fuck Starlight” season. She was either underutilized, poorly written, treated badly or just straight up insultingly sidelined. They were doing fine with her in season 6 and 7 so why go that route? She didn’t “take over the show” and I personally think it’s delusional to think that she did. She had a handful of episodes, so what? And she was the “hero” of season 6 because that played a part in her arc, not because she’s a creator’s pet. So honestly season 8’s treatment/handling of her not only felt unnecessary but a little insulting (and season 9 just BARELY made up for that shit). And all things considered Starlight didn’t come in late in the series, she came in half way. You wanna talk about characters who got introduced late and are not only the new saviors of Equestria, but also the new elements of harmony look at the student 6. And guess what, none of them are half as hated as Starlight is. Again, I point to my previous point of people hating Starlight because she “stole Sunset’s role” and any other reason is just an excuse because literally all the arguments against her can be made for any other character but no one does for some stupid reason.
@Vivace
Don’t remind me……Lets face it anything Starlight did was controversial because fuck us I guess

“Stole Sunset’s role.” What a stupid talking point. Sunset’s a main character, more so than even the human world’s Twilight. Starlight was a side character.

It may be stupid, but that didn’t stop people from making comparisons to both characters and how Sunset deserved it more or some shit and being salty over her not being in the show

she came in halfway only if you saw it retroactively.
By the end of Season 7 (and it being Starlight Season) she only had one season to develop, while the rest has had SIX. Reminded that it took her one season and another couple episodes to get her worthy of having the first non-Mane-6 solo Map Mission, which was a milestone for the Map, and she shares that episode with the Royal Sisters.
Starlight Glimmer owned S7. We all know who da MVP of S7. I personally think she took over. I would have liked if she had taken over for real tho. Make it the Glimmer show.

I would venture the daring opinion that I was always very satisfied with Starlight and her career. I didn’t get half of the bullshit because of her (but that has already been discussed here) and I am also quite happy that Starlight became the new headmare of the School of Friendship in the end. For me personally, it is an absolutely satisfying ending how the leader of a Marxist-like village stepped out of the shadow of her mentor to shape the spirit of future generations. Change my mind ;-)

Dude, she objectively came into the show halfway though. There’s no way around that. Doesn’t matter when or how you saw the show. So again, that’s not a reason.
And Starlight isn’t the only other character who’s gotten a friendship mission. Spike and the cmc did too at some point, so that’s not special to Starlight anymore. And yet again, no one complained when it happened with them. I really am starting to think it’s a clear bias against her
I know you’re probably trying to play devil’s advocate here, but it’s just as affective as doing that to the people who legit think Lion King ripped off of Kimba the White Lion. I don’t think there’s any legitimacy to it because a lot of the arguments are exaggerated like crazy or just made up, and the ones that could be understandable can easily be explained away. I respect that you’re trying to make this less one sided as possible but lets face it, every thing about the Starlight hate is one sided

That is a good ending for her when you put it that way. I just wish she didn’t have to be given Twilight’s table scraps in order to make that happen. But I honestly can’t think of any other way to do it so I can’t complain.
and honestly I wouldn’t have noticed her getting Twilight’s table scraps if it weren’t for the fandom saying she’s Twilight 2.0.So again, I blame the fandom lol

Yes, I also blame the fandom for a lot, and there were some VERY exhausting moments, some of which became VERY personal. But I wouldn’t want to miss the memory of that. Yes, sometimes you get a bloody nose in discussions with others, and you will never be able to convince everyone of your own opinion. But some battles have to be fought when you care about something very much. And it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Even if you literally often run into a wall. At some point, you’ve run into it so many times, you’ve run the fucking thing in. ;-D

For me personally, if anything, she was first and foremost Twilight’s student. And I could hardly have wished for a better student for the Princess of Friendship, because we saw in No Second Prances exactly how much Twilight herself was still dependent on her student-teacher relationship with Celestia. So much so that it even took Celestial Advice to finally free Twilight from this sort of thinking.
This was a great moment in the character development of Starlight, Twilight and Celestia. And also a great moment for the show itself. So, anyone here or anywhere else may think I’m a complete idiot, but I strongly believe that Starlight was important for the development of other characters.
Good girl. You have earned a place in my heart (forever) and the canon of the show. ;-)

I like that a number of people who hated her for the early stumbles in her character writing came to be won over with time.

I’m OKAY with her having risen to MVP status after just one season. By the end of Season 7 I was ready for the Starlight Show. But then Season 8 decided that it wasn’t the Starlight Show. Oh well.
Is Starlight special? Yes. YES! Definitely she’s special! Everybody felt it. She’s Twilight’s _magical equal!_She formed her own inner-circle group of misfits rather than inheriting Twilight’s group. As far as successor goes, Twilight saw Starlight as her successor. Our girl is super special.
Is she sue? No.
She even inherited was the school and the castle. Which makes her status a strange one. By the end of S9 what is she?
Both the school of Friendship and The Castle were built by the Princess of Friendship. NOW, Starlight practically owned the real estate. So is she a princess without wings? (not that she needs them)
Also is she ever married? She that old and hasn’t settled with anyone? Is Luster Dawn secretly the offspring?

In the dank dusty archive of old tomes and arcane scriptures, Luster Dawn found an old scroll. It is enchanted by a high level spell preventing it from being read. Lucky for Luster, she’s dispelled enchantments like this before. She unrolled the scroll and attempted to consume the forbidden knowledge.
The discovery got her shook. She’s reading her REAL birth certificate, signed by Princess Twilight herself.
“Wait…I’m Starlight’s daughter?”
Starlight Glimmer walked up to her from behind
“Always has been.”

Exactly. (the “proof she nevar reformed” is especially annoying)
@tehwatever
It really was a shame that even if she was still cool, S8 and especially S9 reduced her prominence.
@MegaAnimationFan
Sunset was just never going to be in FiM regardless, when she debuted in what was explicitly a High School AU spinoff with those connections to Equestria.

I’m sure this was deliberately left out. I admit that when I first saw the scene of Starlight and Sunburst in the entrance to the School of Friendship in The Last Problem, I wondered if Sunburst and Silverstream were shipped here. But I assume that they simply consciously kept all options free.
Therefore, StarTrix tends to be possible. ;-)

Speak for yourself man, I wanna purge my mind of that shit. Which is what I’m trying to do on a daily basis, sadly though a lot of Starlight’s identity is revolved around her controversy so wishing to be rid of these memories is a fool’s wish in of itself
@AC97
Again, tell that to her fucking fans. Not that they will believe you….

Well, I have memories of my own I’d like to erase. Especially when it comes to my combat mission in Afghanistan. At that time I saw horrors and atrocities that a normal person only might imagine in his/her worst nightmares. And it almost broke me. Even today I still carry this inner burden. It is also very difficult for me to talk about it at this very moment.
But the reason I became a Brony in the first place was the search of a way to give me back some kind of happiness, satisfaction and the belief in goodness and friendship in my life. Between MLP and my combat mission there are several years in which I have gone through hell inside. I was more dead than alive. Nevertheless I finished my education, found a wife and a family.
Nevertheless, I would say that it was only with MLP that a void closed up in me that I had perhaps not noticed at all before. That’s the magic of G4 for me. Others can still throw their BS on me, but this holy Grail of lightheartedness and joy nobody can take from me. And for me personally, Starlight Glimmer has a big part in this.
So if I can go on living as a former soldier and continue to believe in the good in the world, then you can certainly forgive your opponents at some point and concentrate on the things that do you good. And these are pastal-colored ponies with songs about fun and friendship, and then you can forgive certain stupid things about the show, right? ;-)
I’m sorry if I’m being a little too personal right now. I’m trying to lift your spirit by my way. Certainly not the easiest one. But no matter how you feel, we’re here to listen to you. That’s our little magic of friendship. :-)

Well, I’m not peddling about that.
Bundeswehr Tribute - Wir werden euch nie vergessen (We will never forget you)
Not always everything is as you want it
Life always plays its own game
But I had a comrade
Who stood faithfully by my side
Why he died, I don’t know
Why he’s gone, I’m asking you
Tears have remained
In my face
And one last greeting at your grave
From me your friend and comrade
It remains the memory
One last greeting at your grave
From me your friend and comrade
There remains only one look back

I think Starlight showed up at a point where the lack of long-term planning for The Mane Six was starting to catch up to them. Most of the big watershed moments were behind them. Half of them had no long-term goals. Two of them never had to evolve as characters to accomplish their goals. Only Fluttershy ended up being a properly dynamic character. These characters were conceived in a different time and it was arguably too late to try and reinvent them.
Me point being, if you introduced a new main character that:
*is written for a show that already has a well-defined identity
*is built from the ground up to be dynamic instead of static
*the writers can plan a multi-season arc for
*the writers still have room to explore and experiment with
*still has all of its watershed moments chambered
then that character was going to outshine The Mane Six by default, regardless. If she did take over the show, it was less of a coup and more of a defacto takeover.
She got scaled back in Season Eight because the writers finally decided to experiment with The Mane Six again. In terms of leadership, Twilight becoming headmare was what her becoming a princess should have been. Rainbow Dash was noticeably more mature. The End in Friend was the most interesting Rarity or Rainbow Dash had been in years. It did give Starlight one of the best episodes ever: Road to Friendship.
