That’s…..actually a good point.
See, that’s proper critique. If more people did that, then I’d honestly have very little to complain about.

It did give Starlight one of the best episodes ever: Road to Friendship.

Aaaaaand that’s where my agreement ends. Not only do I think that’s a bad episode, but it’s worst Starlight episode. Bar none. It’s like insultingly bad, because it just spits in the face of her character development by going out of it’s way to make her 100% in the wrong by having her make stupid and bad decisions left right and center with literally no explanation, plus the snoring trait was never a thing before or after the episode, so it was made for that episode alone just to give Trixie a (not very good) reason to be annoyed with her. It’s one of the best examples of “because the plot demands it” or “just to cause conflict. Other good examples is Matter of Principals and Filli Vanilli)

I know I’ve complained enough about that damned episode but I honestly don see why any of you, such loving fans of Starlight, who respect her character, not only think this is a good episode but one of the best Starlight episodes. It literally makes no sense to me. Not even from a shipping standpoint because there’s nothing shippy about how they act. They’re constantly hostile with each other and basically break up near the end over stupid shit. And it’s not even the first time we see them at an impasse. This is like the 3rd or 4th time we’ve seen them at odds with each other and it even continued in season 9 to some extent. So on top of character derailment it really just reinforced my issues with their friendship and was the final nail in the coffin with me. It is so not a healthy friendship, to the point where I can make a video essay about it. I mean, just one example of why: You got 2 incredibly flawed individuals. One (Starlight) constantly tries to fix her mistakes and learns and grows from it, the other (Trixie)…..doesn’t. Maybe she acts like she learned something but it’s completely forgotten about later (and arguably gets worse over time). Friendship is a two way street and the writers seemed to only focus on one and not the other. Even tho the one they ignore is obviously more problematic, in a way that can’t be ignored.

Wow lol, THAT was a rant. Sorry to shit on half of your guy’s ship or otp but I just don’t see the appeal because nothing about their dynamic screams “shipping” if anything it screams the opposite.
Full disclosure though: I know I’m the only one here who thinks this. So instead of taking it out on you and arguing again I’m just gonna fully embrace my craziness like I should’ve done long ago

Brash, impulsive solutions that try to please everyone are a part of her character. The writers were able to make her a dynamic character by gradually reducing her impulsiveness and the radicalness of her solutions. I think it’s okay for a character to relapse a bit if they’re tired or stressed out. Helps remind us that they’re still human(for lack of a better word). So trading the wagons is a bad thing to do, but it’s also a trade up that (in theory) solves the problems they had been having.

As far as Starlight and Trixie, part of the fun was that the characters weren’t just a bunch of goody two-shoes, and had legitimate flaws. Going back to my earlier post, what bothers me is that they sanded the edges off any potentially spicy conflict between members of The Mane Six early on. The fact that Starlight and Trixie get on each other’s nerves because of personality flaws, and that they can fight but still be friends, is what makes their relationship compelling.

Not by that point. Think about it, by season 8 she wasn’t doing that shit anymore. Because news flash, she grew out of that. I legitimately hate how people just ignore character progression like that with her. I’d be more forgiving toward this stupid writing choice if there was build up to it. Like she’s been trying like crazy to work it out and the wagon trade was like a final resort or something, which is what they did in To Change a Changeling and Uncommon Bond. But no, they just ignore that and just have her do it just because. Again, the episode offers no explanation to why she did what she did, they just had her do it (which the episode low key implies). There’s a word for that kind of writing choice, it’s called Flanderization. It’s like Pinkie just doing random shit for the sake of it, it’s practically ooc.

In short, it was very poorly executed

I’d agree if the show didn’t show that that’s all their relationship is. See, being at odds as friends is not inherently a bad thing, but if your friendship is nothing BUT that, then there’s a problem. Also the show never gives a legitimate reason for them to remain friends in spite of all the problems nor does it provide a benefit to keeping said friendship. I mean sure there was the whole “we have dark pasts and no one understands us” thing form season 6. But here’s the problem. Starlight doesn’t have the weight on her shoulders, she’s not anxious anymore and she is pretty sociable/approachable by season 8 (hell, I’d argue season 7 is when she was past her social anxiety/ineptitude) and people seem to like her at this point. So at that point there’s no real reason for them to remain friends anymore because not only is there no connection anymore (Starlight’s no longer an outcast and is a better pony) but they don’t seem to remotely enjoy each other’s company. Like they very seldom even get along, if at all. It’s clear that they’re still friends because the script says so
I don’t understand the appeal in a friendship or how it’s compelling if it has nothing but problems. And I know you all are like “every relationship has problems”. And you’re right, but my point is the good needs to outweigh the bad. Or at the VERY least there needs to be a balance, and I’m sorry but the show never presented such a thing. It’s like it’s insisting on there being a healthy relationship in there but never bothers to prove it. And no “making up at the end” doesn’t count if it happens over and over again and nothing is learned by the end of it (it’s like the cycle of abuse but ‘abuse’ is a strong word so it’s more like a cycle of……..uncaringness? Ok the term needs a little work but you get the idea) Honestly I feel like I’m being low key gaslit. Like I’m being shown how their friendship is but I’m basically being told the opposite, which again, causes me to question my sanity lol

Full disclosure, I have nothing against the whole Starlight/Trixie thing as an idea. It’s a good idea. It’s just so clumsily handled with, in hindsight, zero direction or planning with what seemed like them making stuff up as they went along. It’s like they were trying so hard to make Starlight and Trixie’s friendship irreverent and screwball-y for the sake of being different, but totally forgot to make it sincere, or deliberately left out the sincerity because reasons. Because of that, the few moments were they do actually act like friends seems kinda disingenuous itself

I generally agree with that, and by S9, for what faults it had as a season, that aspect of her character got the proper payoff. She was no longer impulsive, she was shown to be overly responsible, and she was demonstrated to be selfless.

“TrixStar” is a good pun and is therefore a better ship name, as discussed above

Is it bad that I think Sunset could be a more interesting character if she weren’t tied into EQG, and say, her bouncing off of post-reformation Starlight, or vice-versa?

I’d wonder, if you’re going with both Sunset and Starlight being older than Twilight, which one of them is older than the other?
