Why G5 after G4 Canonically Makes No Sense

So even with it confirmed that it takes place sometime after Generation 4, I still do not believe under any circumstance that this new generation is somehow after Generational 4.

I watched the movie and I do not recall anypony using magic. It’s been shown in G4 that even foals who use magic have no idea what they are doing like Flurry and Pumpkin Cake.

So how does everycreature lose their magic? Did Tirek steal it? If so, then why is he not taking things over? Furthermore, where are the other species? Did Discord do something again? Is this his third attempt to teach everycreature a lesson?

We have the Mane 6 at the end literally unifying all the species co-existing together clearly with zero specism. I can believe if somehow the other creatures decided to no longer be friends with the ponies, but you mean to tell me that even the three main pony breeds are NOT getting along? And what’s worse, that they have impossible rumors about one another?

Hasbro, if this really is true and not just wide spread speculation… Then that… Is more of a stretch… Than when Discord erased everycreatures memory so he would take the blame for Cosmos from IDW in the literal canon MLP episodes.

Don’t even get me started on why or how the G4 new designs are, well, like that.

The ONLY thing I can think of, is that, and follow me here;

It DOES take place after G4
But it takes place in an ALTERNATE timeline where Twilight Sparkle and her friends were different including some of the situations

That is, the ONLY way, ANY of this, makes remote sense!

Otherwise it’s just impossible! It’s even fictionally impossible! Unless they next add a villain who has been known to have that type of magic.

But in the end, I just have to admit one thing…

There are so many problems and questions that arise concerning the very nature of magic and so many other details of the world that it turns into a theory web that’s so complicated that Occam’s Razor slashes G4’s connection to G5 almost at the root. Whatever version of G4’s world existed in G5, if any at all, it’s not the one we watched those years ago, is my view.

And that’s fine, looking forward to G5’s show.

After all she and her friends solved all problems! Equestria became a utopia! If this IS a sequel to G4… Aside from the toys… Where is ANY hint of the old world within the movie?!

I wish this was covered, and maybe it’ll be covered in the future, but you’re really limiting yourself if you focus on G4 villains as possible culprits. Really anything could’ve happened between G4 and G5, and I suppose you consider this when you say they could add another villain. IMO, I get the impression it’s just a “the world became less magical when the races grew apart” kinda like Rainbow Roadtrip, which would admittedly be kinda lame, but who knows.

I’ll be blunt and say that “where are the other species” talk really gets on my nerves. First of all, especially in later seasons, other species were used for “diversity and handling differences” stories since the pony races were culturally the same in FIM. Here, the races were rewritten so that those kind of stories are baked into Equestrian society without needing to bring in other species, so the writers didn’t bother. Also, like a lot of other issues with the movie, there wasn’t really much time for other species, nor even a place where they could logically be fit into the movie. Maybe I’ll be bothered if a season of the G5 series comes and goes without non-ponies, but I forgive them for not shoehorning them into 90 minutes. In-universe, it’s important to note that they explored literally three places. There’s a lot more places to explore.

It’s far in the future. Empires rise and fall. Especially in the pony world with all sorts of evil magic at play, healthy relationships between groups can be tampered with. That being said, regarding “impossible rumors”, the three races were absolutely way too isolated from each other. You’d think the earth ponies would’ve realized at some point that the pegasi can’t fly just by some ponies wandering around, for example.

The movie was loaded with G4 references. Sunny idolizing the mane 6, the stained glass, the Wonderbolts poster, some FIM place names appearing in the background. It’s not too firmly-rooted in the Equestria in G4, but there was a clear attempt to tie it in.

I honestly was half paying attention, but after getting over my hate for G5, I did in fact notice that now.

Well, damn. I guess that works better for the idea I have called “Ask the Mane 11”. It’s supposed to replace my “Ask Dust Rock” series where the Mane 5 somehow end up in the past (since I guess it’s sadly confirmed now…) and it’s going to be about them knowing the events of the G4 series up to “The Last Problem”.

In the pilot comic it’ll have Sunny Starscout at one point show them the last thing they remember; receiving a strange talisman that asks wearer questions, que the askers.

And now… I’ll admit defeat x.x

I still stand by my statement that this is quite a stretch despite being canon. I know in real life there is still loads or; racism, sexism, homophobia, and all sorts of hatred, but you cannot tell me we didn’t heavily relapse over the years. If anything, we’re inching every year closer.

It’s why I was so determined to prove this false, because I just doubt all the progress was smacked out the window. As much as I enjoyed the movie the second time as opposed to the first when I hated it, I guess I still think it’s just Hasbro screwing around.

Oh well, at least we got Izzy Moonbow out of it.

To be a bit of a devil’s advocate, I wouldn’t be surprised if the series takes a lot of liberties with things established in G4 to the point where connecting the dots between G4 and G5 may be too tough to reasonably link. I kind of expected this with the movie too, and while there are things that are a stretch, it ended up being removed enough from G4 while paying enough homage that it’s easy for me to consider it a continuation.

The population grew complacent.

With complacency came decreased resilience.

The threshold of magnitude for a disturbance to result in ruin diminished.

It’s inevitable that in the cyclical ebbing and flowing nature of the cosmos conditions will eventually change. It could have been anything that prompted the sealing of magic. My hypothesis is that either Twilight Sparkle or one of her successors chose to seal magic, and their reasoning is as yet untold. Without magic in the world, there were many consequential effects: not only did unicorn spellcasting became impossible, not only did pegasi wings lose the lift assistance they needed, not only did earth ponies lose their innate influence on the prosperity of the land… but weather can no longer be controlled, windigoes can no longer manifest in the presence of conflict, and without this conflict suppression system keeping tribalistic tensions in check, it was inevitable interequine relations would devolve.

It didn’t even need to take 800 years. It could happen in as little as 40. What took a millennia to build can be destroyed in less than a single lifetime.

The princess at the time could have believed that magic itself was a threat, or that something more destructive than ponykind could handle could only be neutralized if magic became entirely unavailable. There may even be consequences for bringing it back.

So, here’s what I kind of HOPED happened, because it would be an interesting story to explore:

Following the Storm King’s demise, the factions he once controlled have encountered a power vacuum, and even though fizzlepop berry twist was last spoken of attempting to stabilize a lasting peace in his wake… there is no guarantee that she succeeded in the long term. Should an arcane civil war erupt that envelops all the nations beyond Equestria’s borders, and threatens to spill over into ponydom’s sovereign lands, disarming all of them in one fell swoop may be the penultimate nuclear option that saves the world from itself…
By reverse engineering the Staff of Sacanas into a weapon of mass thaumaturgical containment, the magic of the whole world can be sequestered until such a time as the belligerent factions are rendered docile again.

Knowing Hasbro they won’t go back to old ideas, there’ll make another villain. Sure they reused SOME villains a couple times, but the events are always drastically different.

Okay, correction, they use old villains all the time in G4, but I feel as though we are heading to something entirety different. The first villain we had thus far was Sprout Cloverleaf I think it was?

I get the feeling the villains won’t actually be villains, but more like chancellor Neighsay. Remember him? He just corrupts and tries to manipulate others. Hell, he did that to STAR SWIRL!

That’s probably what we’ll be dealing with unfortunately.

The problem with big villains is that they quickly stop posing a credible threat to Equestria. FiM had played out the bigger and badder villain parade by the time Tirek showed up the first time.

Antagonists provide deeper opportunities for deeper stories.

Also I know it’s unfair to compare things to others that are NOT related under any circumstances, however the franchise of Undertale and Deltarune have immediate friendship and no one seems angry about that.

Again, I know it’s unfair to go outside the main topic (and I think against the rules?) but if we mean the realism, sometimes that just doesn’t apply when it’s still connected directly to a world that doesn’t have any. G4 and G5 are Canonically connected.

So honestly? Trying to say “it is more realistic” is a bit ironic as it came from something that is indeed part of.

In a nutshell? This is basically season 11 (yes season 10 came out in comic form).

I agree that how the Princesses were treated was bad writing. However, the root cause of that style of bad writing isn’t being incapable of writing a coherent episode. Rather, it’s a combination of two things:

There is no series continuity editor. The writers didn’t bother to watch recent episodes, so character arcs are all over the place.
Specifically for Celestia looking like a fool, it was an obsessive desire to keep Twilight and friends as the protagonists. They could not let go of Twilight enough to allow Celestia to demonstrate why she’s the boss mare of all Equestria.

The incompetent at writing an episode episodes are the dreaded Spike episodes of early seasons which consist of 20 minutes of unfunny cringe humor followed by two minutes of resolution. The episodes that reveal that FiM had precisely zero long-range planning, by contrast, are often among the most-loved episodes in the series when considered in isolation.

Perpahs I didn’t make myself clear: Spike episodes aren’t the only bad episodes of FiM. Rather, they are the most obvious category of episodes that have earned low expectations. Twilight in later seasons and some AJ episodes suffer from the same problem of the character suddenly flipping the stupid switch in order to create dramatic tension.
Regardless, the overall point of my comment is that bad writing decisions within a single episode are not the same set of bad decisions that affect the series as a whole.
