I recently graduated from animation school, and among other things, I learned there that any story, no matter how simple or to what audience is aimed, must contain at least one fitting twist.
That and “write what you know about” and since I’m also a bona fide cook… yeah, my stories tend to include at least one thing related to cooking.

- Ever heard of M.Night Shyamalan? Known for doing twists. Not like anybody won’t expect a twist to happen, with one of his recent twists at least partially a surprise due to a red-herring twist. It may not the best example to bring up here but it does show the danger of being the “what a twist” guide.
- Why are you learning writing in a school for animation? Unless you plan to go indie, there’s generally little reason for the animator to know how to write. Mostly because the animator’s job is to animate something already written, with the two exceptions I can think of is going indie or if you are neurotically paranoid that the writer would go under for economic or health reasons.

Here’s an Equestria Girls story idea that I think should be done, and would work within their series without spending too much time in Equestria:
The Sun Rises - Sunset Shimmer gets a message from Princess Twilight that Celestia would like to see her again. This leaves her too frightened to even respond, which her friends are quick to notice and they try to find out why exactly she feels this way after so long and how they can convince her that she shouldn’t.

Oh, why not: I wrote this on /mlp/ some time ago and it got a decent reception, which is high praise considering it’s /mlp/Ponyville harvest festival
Ponies having lots of happiness and cheer before winter
The main event is an open cooking contest where the theme is simple: Pancakes.
But not just any pancakes: they must be worth of being called the best comfort food.
Applejack is looking forward this contest, as nobody can beat the charm of her homemade food so the prize is practically hers
PinkiePie is on the same wavelength: nobody can top her ultimake baking skills and the superb fluffyness of her pancakes.
Both girls already decided what they will do with the prize money
Both girls also brag about their own skills, and soon the bragging becomes a bit too much
So much that they develop a rival streak and decide to make eat the other one’s words
Other contestants include, but are not limited to BonBon, Spike and even Derpy because ha! ha! Pandering!
They already know that with AJ and Pinkie around the competition will be very tough, so they decide to go all out to pulverize the competitors.
The contest starts. Location: Ponyville’s Plaza.
There’s a large stand with kitchens ready to use, and a huge pile of ingredients for the contestants to choose and use at will.
Everyone immediately try to hog the best ingrediants for themselves
Then every pony (plus the dragon) use the best of their skills to create the fluffiest, juiciest, sweetiest pancakes ever, packed with sweet cream, fruits, candy, chocolate, sprinkles, honey, syrup and a loooong etc.
They are all decided to not lose against the rest
Spike uses his own fire to cook the pancakes and also uses it to combine sugar with fruits, honey and syrup to create a multicolored crystaline crust that makes his pancakes shine like gems
BonBon mixes colored sweets with the batter to create an incredibly chewy and elastic pancake tower.
PinkiePie creates an extravagant mix of creams, chips, sprinkles and frosting to make every pancake hide a different, surprising flavor
And AJ packs her pancakes with grated apple, glazed apples, fresh apple slices, apple juice, dried apples and carefully cut apple peels as decoration, all with the most absolute harmony
The rest of the contendants also create incredibly sweet, ingenious flavor combinations
Derpy just watches everyone in awe before she finally starts working on her own dish as well.
The judges begin sampling the incredibly sweet food, they cannot decide which one is the best because all of them look and taste amazing
Eventually the judges decide that AJ and Pinkie’s pancakes are tied as the best ones, each one practically created an ode to harmony and sweetness.
Then Derpy (who finished the last) presents her own pancakes and everyone chuckles at her crudely made food.
They are just some shapeless pancakes, clumsily garnished with applesauce and sourcream
The rejected contestants and the two main contenders can’t wait to see the judges tear her food to pieces, the ugly pancakes simply cannot compete with their carefully made ones.
But the judges aren’t saying shit.
Because they are too busy devouring Derpy’s food.
Forget sampling, they wolf down their plates and immediately declare Derpy as the winner, since she was the only one who understood the contest’s purpose.
WHAT THE HAY?!
Of course everyone immediately complain, how’s that their harmony of sweet flavors could lose against Derpy’s burnt crap?
The judges ask them to try Derpy’s pancakes so they could see by themselves.
The irate contestants do as they were told and discover that Derpy’s pancakes were actually salty potato pancakes.
She says that since everyone else were aiming to create the sweetiest flavors ever, she got worried about the judges’ tastebuds so she prepared something simple and salty, much easier to eat for ponies with their mouths and stomachs overloaded with sugar and sweet flavors.
In other words, she created true comfort food by considering the situation of who was going to eat her food, as opposed of the other contestants who only aimed at overshadowing each other.
Pinkie and AJ admit their defeat and apologize to each other for their previous behavior, the other contestants also apologize for losing sight of what’s really important.

Starlight Glimmer and Maud Pie are on tour with Trixie’s magic show. The next stop on their tour is Hoofington, but Trixie suggests they skip that town without giving an explanation why. Unfortunately, they’ll have to stop anyway after Trixie’s wagon gets a flat tire. (“This is why the Great and Powerful Trixie doesn’t trust wheels!”) As soon as they go into town, the locals recognize Trixie as “Trixie the Terrible”, and law enforcement immediately locks her up.
So remember that story Trixie told Ponyville about how she vanquished an ursa major in Hoofington? Well, that’s not exactly how it happened. Oh, there was an ursa, all right. But Trixie didn’t vanquish it – she LURED it by accident with the fireworks in her magic show. It stampeded through town and destroyed half the buildings. Trixie eventually drove it off with more fireworks, but the damage was done by then. And before the ponies of Hoofington could get her to pay them back for the damages, she and her wagon were long gone.
Though they eventually rebuilt, the ponies of Hoofington waited for the day when “Trixie the Terrible” would finally be brought to justice. Starlight Glimmer cites due process and says Trixie can’t be put in jail without a fair trial. So it’s up to Starlight and Maud to defend Trixie in pony court and prove the destruction she caused was an accident and that she’s not the same mare she was back then.

Frustration in Excelsis 
Nitpicky, but Trixie’s wagon has wooden wheels. I don’t think we’ve seen inflatable tires in the show so far. Maybe it just busts a wheel? If the spokes or rim break, a wagon wheel gets pretty useless.

Driving a little faster then she should in order to get a big sale at the fabric store, Rarity gets into a minor fender bender with Sunny Flare. After a judge finds them both equally responsible for the accident, Sunny challenges Rarity to a boxing match to decide who has to pay for the damages.
Vice Principal Luna: Hmm, I don’t recall approving this event for our gymnasium… And I certainly didn’t approve that ring girl!

Earthbound Misfits: When Miss Cheerilee gives Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle detention, Scootaloo winds up spending her afternoon with Spike. The two discover they have more in common - especially when it comes to their problems - than either would have guessed, and are quick to commiserate and to offer each other advice. Unfortunately, when you get advice on your problems from somepony who has the same problems and hasn’t solved them either, it’s not necessarily going to be good advice.

Stone of Heart A couple of ponies ask Twilight for help when the Choosing Stone begins pairing them up with ponies they’ve never met or who they have bad relationships with. They came to Twilight mostly because they thought she’d be able to get Cadance, who they think they actually need, to look into it. She rolls her eyes, but Twilight, Cadance and Shining Armor investigate (after leaving Flurry Heart with Starlight and Sunburst). When they get to where the Choosing Stone is, it seems to have gone insane, matching ponies with trees, distant stars and abstract ideas. Cadance senses that the love-magic that powers the Stone is all out of whack and while she’s able to restore it, something doesn’t feel quite right. But the Stone starts to make Twilight a match and she hurries them all back to the train before it can. Pan over to a nearby rock that turns out to have been queen Chrysalis. She does some kind of magical interaction with the Stone, grins all evil-like and declares the whole thing ‘very educational’.
Holiday Anthology I: Nightmare Night As pony influence spreads throughout the land, so too do their traditions. These are the scary stories told in cultures recently exposed to the most horrifying of holidays.
-Gilda tells the griffons about when, for one night a year, any griffon who stepped or flapped outside of Griffonstone was hunted down and captured by Aramaspi, never to be seen again. And about the only one who ever got away.
-Ember tells a tale about a beast that even dragons fear: the Chimera Queen.
-A changeling elder tells what could have happened if Chrysalis had succeeded in taking Canterlot and how it all could have gone horribly for every living thing on the planet. Including her, after the queen goes mad from power, isolation and eventually hunger.
-Rutherford starts to tell a story, but is stopped by the credits. Because levity!
Song for Moolah Sapphire Shores is the biggest pop act in Equestria this week, her career going strong on the massive success of a love song that speaks to the souls and hearts and whatever of the listeners. Even Gilda, who overhears it while visiting Rainbow, gets the emotional sniffles from it. After a show in Ponyville, Sapphire confides in Fluttershy and Spike, who won backstage passes in a contest, that she wrote the song purely because love songs tend to do well. She goes on to reveal that everything in the song was just a guess, since she’s never actually been in love. Fluttershy and Spike think that sounds awfully close to lying, but Sapphire says musicians write about experiences they’ve never had all the time and insists it’s fine. Word gets out, and ponies don’t agree with its fineness. The only one who doesn’t mind is Twilight, who compares it to a novel. “It’s not important that your entertainment be totally truthful,” she says. “What matters is that it reaches you.” Sapphire performs the song live and the ponies who can let go of it not being based on true events find themselves reacting just as strongly as when they assumed it was. The ones who can’t, make excuses to not enjoy the song and stay feeling ‘betrayed’.
The Greatest Debate! Earth ponies start looking down on unicorns for using their magic to hold books, insisting that the only way to really experience them is to hold them in their hooves. By doing otherwise, unicorns are proving themselves to be pathetic, uneducated plebeians. It’s like when people argue regular books vs. audiobooks. You know, pretentious and pointless.

Slice of Life 2: 200th Episode Extravaganza!: This episode would involve the mane 7 and the background characters working together to prepare a surprise party for Princess Celestia herself. Sunset Shimmer would even return to Equestria to celebrate and apologize to Celestia for what she did in the past. Some characters from the movie would also appear.
