(Ok then… how’s this:)

A somewhat elaborate wooden carriage rumbles through the wasteland, pulled by a quartet of Earth Ponies. Within the cart are three more ponies, one of them a unicorn with a bandana studying the ancient and impossible tome her team had unearthed on one of their better expeditions- the Azure Codex.

a mildly ominous screech is heard off in the great distance of their travels, and attempt to alarm the party of possible danger ahead. for sure though, there was something lurking within the route they so sought to take

Driver 1: “I still think this is a bad idea- we should have hired guards when we had the chance.”

Driver 2: “Relax, will you? We wouldn’t have taken this expedition if we weren’t ready for it. Plus if anything goes wrong we still got Second’s glowy blue friend, right?”

Lead Archaologist: “That reminds me… Second, hows the preliminary scan going on the expedition site?”

Second Sight: “Gimme a moment, I’m concentrating…”

Second was using the Codex to focus her foresight, granting herself visions of what was up ahead.

she saw tens of corpses piled infront of the road, however the stages of the decomposition added the factor of their rotted- it was blindly at random , not a single body was exactly on par with the other in terms of how long it was dead

Second Sight: retches a little “This looks bad- All I can see up ahead are dead bodies.”

Assistant archaeologist: “How bad is it?”

Second Sight: “It looks like they all died at different intervals- I think whatever killed them left them there on purpose… and might be waiting around for more.”

Lead Archaeologist: “Drivers, full stop!”

As he says that, he pulls a lever at the front of the carriage, causing the brakes to clamp down on the wheels as the four drivers pulling the carriage skid to a stop.

Lead Archaeologist: “All hands to battle stations- it sounds like things are about to get ugly very soon.”

a rift of some sort transpired under the corpses, the litter of corpses falling through the portal. ten 8ft chilopodic like creatures crawled out of the rift, charging their way to party, the besides their centipede bodies the most notable feature were their heads, resembling that of a canids, only given multiple eyes

Fortunately, thanks to Second’s foresight, the party had time to arm themselves by the time these creatures were in attack range. The four drivers took the front line with their weapons- the bulkiest of the group was tossed a large folding case that _un_folded into stationary mounting for what appeared to be some sort of relatively miniature ballistia - big enough that it took someone of his size to wield, yet small enough that it could fold into a portable size. As he drew its string into the latch, a bolt of light formed in its firing groove- this mana bolt was not as strong as a real bolt, but time was of the essence right now.

The next largest driver was given a rather large, rather elaborate axe, which he wielded in his teeth. It was rather ornate and almost mechanical, like perhaps it had moving parts of some kind, but ultimately it was still just a melee weapon.

The last two drivers were handed flintlock rifles, and the lead archaeologist drew his revolver. These too had magic ammunition like the crossbow, which formed in their chambers when they drew back their hammers. The other archaeologist simply had a staff, tipped on one end with a jagged crystal inset in a metallic ring.

Second Sight herself stayed behind the others in the cart itself, pulling aside a rug to reveal an arcane circle drawn on the ground beneath it. The started to glow as she began speaking the incantation to activate this summoning circle…

two of the creatures burrowed beneath the ground and sought to approach that way, leaving the other eight on the surface, five of them scurried over their brethren in and instant, and continued their straight forward charge, emitting high pitched screeches as they closed the distance between themselves and the party of equine.
the of them remained behind, their chitin fluttered, folding over and becoming invert, their gaping maws snapped open, revealing a unpleasant mass of tendrils composed of two colors for differentiating their intent and purpose. tentacles that posed as grey would physically extend for the purpose of grabbing their prey, dragging them in or holding them down for the others to feast upon. red would be the ones used for distant discharges of acidic liquid which was sprayed more like a water hose from a distance, even so it was inaccurate

Taking advantage of the exposed soft flesh, the drivers with ranged weapons opened fire upon the three inverted ones in the back, the one with the ballistia firing upon the middle of the three while the rifle-wielding ones took the ones flanking it. Meanwhile the caster in the cart tried to slow the advance of the five approaching directly using an area-effect ice spell, which the axe-wielding one took advantage of in order to try and shatter any that had frozen. The lead archaeologist held his revolver at the ready, scanning the battlefield for signs of the two that had burrowed, meanwhile tendrils of blue energy began to form and gather above the luminous arcane circle Second Sight stood over.

the two that burrowed revealed themselves, ripping out of the solid ground beneath that largest one in the equine crew, going to bite down on his hind legs with their furious razor teeth

the ice did indeed weaken the chargers chitin armor, the creatures weren’t exactly fitted for elemental environments, nor were they used to them, however, some of them were managing to free themselves from the sheets of ice, attempting to resume their attack

the creature stabilizing itself in the center was impaled by the ballista’ bolt and immediately put to rest because of it, the remaining two tried their best to return fire with their acid spewing tentacles. putting all as much effort as possible into hitting the flint lock rifle wielders. the high pressured sprays the tentacles discharged were actually powerful enough to slice through solid materials, one of the reasons this attack lacked accuracy. they lacked a stable firing method and were more fitted for attempted physical combat. the only reason the attempted this set up was because they were infact mimicking their targets

The lead archaeologist was quick enough to get a couple shots off on the burrowing ones, at the very least stalling their attack enough that the axe-wielding one was able to cleave through some of the now-weakened chargers before the creatures’ teeth finally found their way into his legs.

The rifle-bearers dodged the incoming sprays of acid to the best of their ability as they returned fire, the ballistia now turned to fire upon the one more to his right.

The sorceress, seeing her previous spell had been of some effect, continued to freeze the creatures that got closer and closer to the cart.

Within said cart, the being Second was summoning was finally beginning to solidify, the tendrils energy becoming encased within a blue metallic shell that gave it the form of a particularly large armored unicorn, with some other tendrils streaming from its back fusing to become a flowing cape, held conspicuously by the armor’s shoulder pads serving as clasps.

Her ritual finally complete, Second ceased channeling her magic, taking a brief moment to catch her breath from exerting so much energy in the summoning, before looking up to the being she had conjured and issuing one simple command:

“Cobalt, defend.”
