Tag name: multiple variants Link
Short Description: Images with at least 4 versions.
Long Description:
When an image has at least 4 versions (three
alternate versions plus the original), add this tag to all of them.
Side note on the above: 4 is arbitrary. I chose it on the idea that 4 is the minimum quantity that results from the smallest amount of “combinatorial explosion”, eg. suppose you have a character with or without glasses, and with or without a hat - then you need 4 images to represent all combinations.
The purpose of the tag is to help either find images with a lot of versions (if you like that sort of thing) or to hide them in order to have a less cluttered image list - especially with a complex filter that hides images tagged both multiple variants
and alternate version
, then you’ll see only the first image of big sets of images, but see all of them when there are only a few.
This compensates for Derpibooru’s lack of a “pool” feature.
Description revision suggestion:
Tag name: alternate version Link
Current detailed description (for reference):
Use this tag instead of
edit
when it is the original artist who has made alterations to the image. Don’t use this tag even if you used “alternate version” of some image to make an edit.

One image that’s thought of as the “original” needs to
not be tagged as an “alternate version”. The “original” should be the image with the
lowest rating and fewest embellishments; if that’s not a clear choice, then it should be the image that was uploaded first.
The most “vanilla” version of the pic would be the original.
