1 day before the uprising and escalation

Bashful’s POV
I walked through Ponyville’s dirt roads, my best friend/sister who wasn’t technically a sister, Azure Interdictor, following right behind me. We carried a couple of saddlebags on our sides, filled with the shopping we did today, dressed in a white hoodie and black socks for me and a black jacket with white socks for Azure. I looked behind myself to take a glance at the light blue plane pony, making sure she didn’t get lost. It was just like any other day in this town, or at least, more like any other ‘calm’ day, considering there wasn’t any monster of the week ready to smash buildings… I remember that I thought it would be a calm week this time, as it was already Friday, and nothing had happened yet so far… I was so dreadfully wrong, that I feel I was too innocent…
While we kept our relatively quick pace through the streets, crowded by various kinds of ponies either talking to each other, buying and selling things, or playing out there in the open (Mostly the fillies, but there were a few stallions playing buckball), I could notice in the corner of my eyesight two ponies insulting and lashing, one of them a unicorn and the other one an earth pony. I looked at them for a few instants; they were currently arguing about something in particular, and it seemed to be a delicate subject since their physical gestures indicated anger. I didn’t quite catch what was the conversation topic that they were heated about, but I approached them slowly, inferring that they were about to start a physical confrontation.
Expectedly, one of them, the unicorn seemed to have taken an insult personally and gave the other one an -honestly amazing- uppercut, the hoof connecting and making the poor pegasus fall briefly on his flanks before proceeding to take advantage of his lowered position and charge wildly, attempting to slam the unicorn with his entire body. Azure and I rushed to the scene alongside some other ponies in the crowd, and we thankfully managed to pull them from each other, not wanting anyone to get severely hurt. In a few seconds of struggling, the Royal Guard came and put these police hoofcuffs on their arms, taking them away for disorderly conduct and assault, according to the speech one of the armored ponies did, most likely repeated countless times. Before they actually took them away flying though, I heard the unicorn yell “YOU SON OF A FILLY! LONG LIVE LUNA!”… Most of the crowd looked at others confusedly, not knowing what they meant, and just assuming it was a stupid fight of who’s the best princess… Little did I know that would be a vague foreshadowing of the events that occurred afterward…
Without much thought of what just happened, the crowd dispersed as if told to do so by a higher authority, and they went back to mind their own business, maybe some of them having a new conversation topic in the neat form of ‘You saw these two guys?’. Azure and I just went back to our planned path. Her eyes registered a confused expression, and I just shrugged toward her “I don’t know… either… people are just too aggressive these days I guess…”. We reached home, put our respective saddlebags in the kitchen, and we went to take a nap, snuggling each other, blissfully unaware of the events that were going to unfold in front of our very eyes, and that we’d sadly end up being a participant of…

Start of conflagration.

Azure’s POV
Yesterday was a normal day for me and Bashful, aside from the fight that happened between those two ponies, nothing interesting did occur that day. But I’d probably be shown in all its glory why you shouldn’t seek for something interesting to occur. In any case, it was the next day, a brand new one although I woke up at about 11:00 A.M… don’t judge me, the celestial orb of fire and brightness illuminating the streets. I groggily got out of bed, deciding to put on some socks and go downstairs, where I found the familiar white plone with some pancakes for dinner.
“Morning sleepyhead” He said, I shot a glare at him that basically meant ‘Shut up’, as I walked over to the well-prepared pancakes on the table and the chocolate milk. I was about to sit down on the chair and enjoy my meal when I heard some commotion outside. I ignored the ruckus that happened in the exterior with a sigh and a roll of my eyes (Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, or so they say, right? Even if you eat it at lunch time), while Bashful approached the window slowly, looking outside in confusion.
“Uh…” He started, confusedly. I quickly finished eating and walked towards him “W…what in the name of Celest-” He was about to say, regarding the whole thing outside, when suddenly a loud detonation was heard and one of our windows had their glass broken. Bashful instinctively dove to the ground and brought me prone too with him using his right paw, while more explosions were heard.
“What the?!” I said, daring to peek a bit from my position. There seemed to be a few… uh… gray-colored ponies, with what seemed to be bat wings, and weaponry. From what I could infer, an engagement had happened between them and some Royal Guards, the latter being the losers and none of them actually standing, they seemed to have numerical inferiority. I felt a cold shiver all over my body as I saw that picture and one of them, the tallest one amongst the bunch looked at our home with suspicion, starting to walk in our direction. Bashful’s expression when he peeked afterward was quite similar to mine as we both rushed to the interior of the building, towards our rooms, where we had two guns for self-defense or hunting and stuff
I picked the Royal Armory RA-15 semi-automatic rifle, trotting on to get the ‘drum’ magazine and insert it. Meanwhile Bashful had taken a scoped AP-14 and promptly loaded it. We got extra magazines and anything we’d need, then we escaped through the back door. We kept our heads down all the time, hiding in the bushes, thinking that if we flew, they’d shoot us from the ground, the sunlight not being so good to hide
When we arrived in Ponyville, we were almost shot by Royal Guards, until we explained that some people shot some of them in front of our own property. That seemed to catch their interest way more, although they still were wary of us, I don’t blame them… One of them accompanied us to that fancy Friendship Castle in the center of Ponyville, where they explained that it was some sort of small protests and revolts in the whole state, according to their sources, the first step into a full-fledged uprising and civil war from the bat ponies, though their motives weren’t known so far. All they knew was that there was going to be some injured
They asked us about the weapons we were carrying, and why we came to Ponyville and didn’t hide. Then I spoke “I… I mean… if we go alone, they might kill us… I don’t think we’d have much chance if we hide… they seemed… I… I… don’t know… they could be anywhere…” As I finished saying this, the soldier that was interrogating us smiled, and said “Well, consider yourselves drafted… don’t worry, it’ll be quick, you already have guns to fight” We were shocked and confused, but we couldn’t say anything before the soldier pushed us towards another room, as he continued talking “This will be maybe only some hours long, don’t worry, you guys won’t be soldiers, just medics… First Aid will teach you the basics”
“We… um… well… I… do we really have to?” Bashful spoke alongside me, as the soldier basically ignored him and kept nudging us, leading us into a room where there were a couple of uniforms. “This is a mandatory drafting for emergencies, but don’t you guys worry, this won’t take so long, it’s just an small insurrection and Celestia or the real Royal Guards will handle it” He said, almost with a mocking tone, as if we weren’t real soldiers and just some guys, then again, we didn’t want to become real soldiers, and this pony was basically forcing us, as I started doubting the authenticity of this so-called… uh… sergeant? Was that a sergeant insignia?. Our hesitation and unwillingness was clearly visible, but seemingly the soldier didn’t care or didn’t consider it important “Sleep here, tomorrow you’ll be helping with the majority of Ponyville” I rushed forward and tried to stop him “Wait, but we just wanted to be safe! We don’t want to be part of this!”
He let out a disgruntled sigh, and then sat down, explaining us “In times of emergency, there’s a mandatory drafting to aid with emergencies, not necessarily war related stuff, but it can vary, like for example natural disasters, it’s on the article 6th of the Constitution. In this case you’ll be among the various ponies that are just helping with the wounded. The ponies you call Lyra and Bon Bon are helping to, or the Mayor Mare, and many others. Since you’ll be non-combatants, despite your weapons, your status will be protected and you’ll be safe” He said, as he went back to his room “Sleep well, and don’t worry, we’ll be protecting you, but I doubt things go rough”

Day 1 of the War of the Two Sisters

Bashful’s POV
I walked through the Friendship Castle’s interiors with fear inside me. That kind of terror and self-preservation feeling in my head that politely tells you ‘What the fugg are you doing, go back’. Alongside me was Azure, with a determined expression in her face, managing to hide well the panic on her heart. We were about to go on a warzone anyways, that’s not definitely something you’d enjoy doing. Some soldiers looked at us with a confused expression, they probably found our small size confusing… did they think we were minors? I-I-I mean… w-we were about 4 years older t-than we said… I-I hope they don’t notice…
Or mmaybe they were confused about our clothes… a gleaming white officer dress suit… they gave us that because it was the only thing of our size and also it was the only purely white clothing they had. This uniform didn’t have any insignia or other characteristics, since it wasn’t for showing rank, and instead it had a red cross painted on my chest, alongside two armbands on each arm with the same symbol. They also give me a helmet which they painted fully white and painted red crosses on (It looked kinda like this). Everything was made for the specific purpose to be respectful with the Geneva Conventions and make everyone clear we were non-combatants
The general who had gave me the clothes seemed to approve on the fact I was going to partake in the battlefield, atleast, that’s what I saw on his visage. Although he did question me for my choice of weaponry, pointing out that a single shot, anti-tank scoped rifle was particularly ineffective in the job I’d have, but since they had a deficit in weaponry, and they also didn’t consider I’d be much of a protagonist in the actual fighting, they didn’t mind I had such unwieldly weaponry, I’d be just a combat medic, and not even a combat combat medic, just a random pony aiding the wounded.
I saw Celestia on a room in one of the hallways, as I walked towards the exit of the Frienship Castle. She glanced at me and she seemed shocked out of my appearance, even dropping inadvertantly some papers she was reading. Maybe she thought that I was a simple filly about to go to war… or more like realized it. But before she could actually say something, I was already outside the castle. Although technically this wasn’t a war, right? It was just a silly fighting from some disgruntled bat ponies that wanted extra mangoes? Or whatever that pony told us after we woke up this morning, that one that told us what to do in an emergency and gave us a very quick tutorial on how to use our medical saddlebags. Thankfully it seemed to be quite simple, atleast from what he said, perhaps the more important things like extracting bullets were left to professionals
It all started normally, me and Azure went towards the trenches and the buildings that composed the exterior defense ring of Ponyville, though there was a further one in construction as ponies went to and fro with sandbags and logs. We took a seat in one of the logs outside of the trench as I saw the ponies working together. I considered the preparations unnecessary, atleast because I was told that there was something like a riot and not a fully-fledged war. Then, it happened out of sudden
Everything exploded around us in fast succession, as we heard the whistling sound of artillery shells that, like bringers of death and despair, fell down upon our position. Azure wooshed to my side and took me by my paw, as we dove into the trench and inside some kind of underground bunker to defend ourselves from the concussion and deadly shrapnel that was sent everywhere by the explosive ordnance. Sounds of muffled explosions were heard as we kept inside the bunker, which seemed to do its very best in keeping a decent shape.
Soon, the bombardment stopped. I stood with Azure and many others that had took refuge in the bunker. We all looked at eachother, with varying kinds of expression, although the most common one seemed to be a mix of confusion, fear and sadness. Some of us were shaking inside, already shell-shocked by the event. But we didn’t have much time before some kind of siren went blazing outside. Like if we were given orders from heaven above, we scrambled all outside, trying our best to exit one by one in the admittedly small space. I watched Azure closely, not wanting to lose her in the group of soldiers, and we peeked a bit.
A battle seemed to have begun, I don’t know why, neither how, because I was told this was a freaking riot, and the bat ponies, which I was told were New Lunar Republic, were charging at us, their weapons blazing and firing potshots at our position. I felt scared, despite I had my red-cross helmet, because I couldn’t know if they were firing at me or Azure… But then I took a deep breath, and doing a figurative leap of faith, I ran out of the trench, seeking to bring the injured from the artillery attack back to safety. The machineguns kept doing their musical ‘Atatatatatatatata’ of doom, creating lines of gunshots in the ground near the bat ponies, and even taking some of them down. Muskets were heard as soldiers from both sides tried to kill someone from the other, and mortars made their characteristic firing sounds as they tossed their innacurate explosive gifts towards their target. It was like a disorganized orchestra, were the guns and cannons were the violins, conducted from hell
As this battle went on, I tried my best to keep my head down and aid anybody in dire need. One soldier wasn’t bleeding, but seemed to have been thrown towards a wall by an explosion and broke both hindlegs. I signalled Azure to aid me, and we both put the combatant onto a stretcher and got him out of the action, where other, more trained medical professionals took care of him, proceeding to get back into the area, not paying attention who was winning or losing, just trying my best to save people. Another young Royal Guard seemed to have been hit by shrapnel, and was losing blood profusely in the abdomen. Azure got out the autoinjector of sufentanil, as the experienced combat medic taught us, and promptly jammed it on the poor soldier, while we carried him out of harm’s way, also bandaging him and placing a piece of cloth on his wounds, indicating him to press tightly while we both handled the stretcher to the back of the city with the guard on top.
We kept doing this for a while, trying to do our best, before an explosion suddenly sent me flying a few meters away. Azure went back to me and asked if I was alright, and I nodded, looking around in a hazy confusion. They were still fighting in the trenches, and it seems like it was something really intense because the only thing we could hear aside from our own voices (And even then, barely) was the sound of machineguns and rifles and submachineguns. I prompted Azure to come with me in a nearby building and we stood there as the fighting went on, realizing that staying out there during the conflagration would probably make us get hit by accident or on purpose.

Day 2 of the War of the Two Sisters

Azure’s POV
Yesterday was a really strange day. We took hiding in a nearby house and we kept there for a bit, occasionally coming out when the things have calmed and then going back inside to treat the wounded and try to be a good assistance. Today, we woke up to the continued, repetitive fire of a machinegun outside our home. As we got out, to treat a wounded catatonic corporal with a minor head injury, an NLR sergeant found us and was this close to killing us both, but, after some seconds of suspense, he pointed downwards his weapon in a relaxed state and told us to follow him. When we did, we found a group of Lunar soldiers looking down at an injured bat pony shot in the leg. A single glance towards my plane pony companion let me know that we were going to help him, no matter his affiliation, and she went to use her autoinjector while I blocked the wound with a piece of his uniform and kept pushing. His bat pony friends looked at us with a mix of suspiciousness but also hope, as Bashful proceeded to put a tourniquet above the wounded area using a rebar that was lying around. We nudged a few of the New Lunar Republic bat ponies to aid us as we brought the soldier to safety behind their frontlines, considering that the catatonic royal guard we left earlier was in a much better state and not actively in risk of dying by wounds, unlike this soldier.
After taking care of the bat pony and the royal guard, for which I injected him lorazepam and nudged him to safety so he could calm himself down from his paralyzed state, the bat ponies offered us to sleep on their bunkers instead of the battlefield, where bombs and explosions occured at a constant rate. It was such an awkward but nice gesture from them, and, considering that we didn’t know what was going on and Ponyville had been overrun, we decided to stay in their camp and sleep there.
The next day, we woke up and went out of the makeshift tent they had. There were loads of bat ponies there, but seemingly not many paid attention to us, and whoever did, they were explained we were medics and helped save one of them, it was a surreal feeling, almost like if they considered us one of them. We abandoned their outpost with a wave from one of the soldiers, most likely a friend of the injured guy, and we left. Geneighva Conventions was a thing, but they treated us really nicely… Maybe it was because the war had just started
I looked towards Bashful, checking our medical saddlebags to see if the bat ponies hadn’t stolen us anything, and, from what it seemed, everything was there, except a sufentanil autoinjector which I gave to them so they could aid his injured soldier. We took cover inside houses and tried our best to avoid any bullet or mortar shells. Huge chunks of building being long gone, replaced by gaping holes that showcased reinforced bars and the charred interior remains, like burnt out sofas or broken televisions. We carefully strided through the streets, seeing and inspecting dead soldiers from both sides, we were too late to actually save them… One in particular had his legs ripped off, most likely by an explosion
Me and Bashful looked away as we tried to forget said horrific sight and kept going on. It seems that while we were asleep in the NLR’s camp things kept raging on, and then abruptly stopped… I was confused… so many dead… but there wasn’t much fighting… gunshots were far less than yesterday, when everything started, and were very far away… “D-did…. did we already lose?” I asked towards Bashful with an uncertain tone, things were unclear and I just saw NLR troops around that ignored us both like if we were one of them casually striding around. We kept doing this for quite a while, being generally helpful to whoever crossed our path and trying our best to help, we even aided in lifting a piece of concrete that had feel on a Lunar soldier, and, while we didn’t participate in active combat, we occasionally helped moving things, particularly stretchers and medical things.
“I… I’m not sure… I d-don’t see anyone from the SE… atleast anyone that’s alive and fighting” Bashful replied me with a soft, fearful voice. As we wondered if everything was over by now, we kept aiding wounded soldiers, at a certain point even helping an innocent civilian foal that was probably an unlucky bystander to the conflagration that occured in this town. Thankfully, the little filly had only minor wounds, which allowed us to keep her safe inside a basement and treat her bruises
When we got back out of the basement, telling the filly to stay in there, because we didn’t know what better choice there could be aside from keeping her in a safe place, I nudged Bashful to go with me on a high structure. The Sugarcube Corner seemed to be the best place to look at the city, and, with exception of the Canterlot Castle and the Friendship Castle, it was the highest vantage point we could have near us. When we got up there, jumping over the counter and climbing the stairs, I felt a dread inside me… this was so… empty… especially without the cheerfulness of Pinkie lightning up the mood… It was like a ghost building
After reaching the bedroom of Pinkie high above, I took a glance through the window, trying to make sure I was recognized easily as a medic and showing the red crosses on me. Bashful meanwhile inspected the room, which seemingly was used by both NLR and SE members as a sniper outpost or a machinegun nest, judging the marksman musket with telescopic sight (An very old thing, we were basically assaulting weapon caches from past years) on the ground next to a camouflaged smock on top of something and the belts of ammunition, some sprawled on the ground and others inside boxes. I couldn’t see much, aside from the fire and smoke that rose high above the air, like if wanting to escape the hell occuring on the ground. Using a binocular lying on the ground, I could see the Friendship Castle, with Lunar Guards inside… and no signs of a Solar Empire unit stationed nearby, except perhaps some rogue groups.
But my thoughts were quickly muffled as I heard ruckus behind me. I looked at Bashful, who looked at the camouflage smock which covered something… I gently got close to him and poked it with a forehoof… the thing moved back in response, before unconvering itself… “Are y-you… Lunar Guards?” He asked, whoever he was. His attire was definitely of the lunar forces. I tried to calm him down, just as Bashful… he was probably too traumatized to recognize our fancy uniforms “No, we’re Solar Empire, uh… drafted medics I guess… we won’t hurt you, don’t worry… are you okay? Do you need assistance?” I asked him, and he shook his head in denial “N-no… I j-just… m-my friend is dead… I-I was his spotter… I-I’ve been hiding… Wh-where are the lunar troops?”
Bashful and I looked at eachother, feeling a tingling fear sensation in our hearts… we definitely wouldn’t want at all either of us to die… I know Bashful would be devastated if I got fatally wounded, likewise I wouldn’t be able to handle seeing him dead… But I pushed through these emotions, keeping the mental mantra of ‘It’s to save the wounded and aid the ones in need’ and a more powerful one of ‘If you don’t do so you’re going to get court martialed or some crazy shit “I’m sorry… but there are Lunar ponies on the street if you’d like to go to them, their camp is over there…” I signalled towards the south… I think it was the south, anyways it was where we came from, the bat pony camp
The poor Lunar bat pony spotter seemed to look at where I was signalling at, but he just broke down, lying on the ground and weeping “All for naught… for naught…” He repeated to himself, as we just sat down next to him, gently patting his back and hugging him, attempting to comfort him “I’m…. I’m… he… he was just my friend… why… why” He kept repeating, and we stood with him all the night to help him deal with his grief, as he told us that he had to bury his friend near the SugarCube Corner and that he wished he was shot instead of him

Day 3 of the War of the Two Sisters

Bashful’s POV
We kept ourselves a night comforting and taking care of the pony, helping him on his tough time. I knew we couldn’t really fix his grief, but we could atleast be there for him for a bit, and slowly accompany him to the batpony camp so he’d be able to probably request a leave or something, wans’t sure how militaries oficially worked. Shortly afterwards we went back to action, going again into the town, the roads seemed to be empty, and the buildings, although destroyed and barely looking like something recognizable, seemed to not have anyone inhabiting them. It was like a ghost town of sorts… except for the corpses on the ground of both New Lunar Republic and Solar Empire troops, occasionally an unlucky civilian that was caught in the crossfire… In fact, that made it even more like a ghost town from a scary murder movie… I walked through the bodies, which were rather few despite the war and tried my best to find someone to help. Azure was on the other end of the road, also searching on her own. We decided to split just a bit to search more easily, imagining it would give better results; also, as time went on, we were less scared of the bat pony soldiers that were supposed to be enemies…
Suddenly, I found a not-so-dead bat pony corpse lying on the ground, buried under two Solar Empire dead soldiers in full armor. The poor Lunar troop was unable to move with the weight of the other two and probably was confused as a dead pony by his teammates. I signaled Azure to come to my position, and we both pushed the SE troops to the side. He looked at us with fear and terror in his eyes, as if he was reliving a trauma upon seeing our uniforms and badges, screeching and kicking around weakly. Azure crouched and made sure to try to calm down the pony with slit pupils “Shh… it’s okay, it’s okay…. we’re not going to hurt you… we’re going to save you ok? We’re combat medics… we won’t hurt you we promise, it’s all fine…” At the same time, I inspected the bat pony, noticing that he had a shot in his chest, yet it didn’t seem like hitting anything important (Otherwise his breathing would be erratic… I think? That’s what happens when a lung is hit anyways… and a shot to the heart would be instantly fatal).
I readied my medical saddlebag, and brought a gauze with me, placing it on the wound and bandaging the entire area to keep the cloth blocking the wound, moving slightly the bat pony so it wouldn’t cause discomfort to him. Azure, on the other hoof, reached out for the autoinjector and used it on the pony, starting to feel calmer by the dose of sufentanil administered to his body, the pain slowly melting away to a bearable level. I pressed the bleeding area with the gauze as hard as I could, causing a minor discomfort and wincing in the pony, but attempting to stop the bleeding. After a few seconds, I glanced at Azure and she nodded to me, while I extended my wings and slowly started to fly vertically, carrying the soldier on my paws and hooves, making sure to not let him fall…
He was blabbering something, although I wasn’t exactly paying attention to what he said, I just tried to get into the NLR’s base so this soldier can actually have a chance of living. “Y-you’ll be okay… we’re already there…” I whispered worriedly, as I flew as fast as I could, and in a few seconds, I reached the Lunar camp on the outside of the town, right in the trenches that we had abandoned some days prior. My paws and hooves gently touched the grass as I lowered him slowly and carefully onto the ground, calling a doctor or anyone that could help. The soldiers realized the urgency and soon, a medic came running along with two stretch-bearers and took the bleeding pony away.
When I was leaving the camp. I realized something that wasn’t there before… there were a baker’s dozen of artillery cannons, all aimed high in the sky, and an extra one was being hauled to position, while ammunition was carted to and fro, bat ponies hustling their way into the cannons as an officer, which I didn’t know who he was, looked at a map intently, seemingly corroborating the information provided on the piece of paper with his own eyes as he used a binocular to look out before the final cannon was hauled and put in position, then, out of sudden, his screeching voice was heard above the chatter and gunfire, a loud roar that was the prelude of something bigger… “FIRE!” Soon, the death instruments followed suit with the order, loud explosions, one after another as the howitzers recoiled back from the sheer force as if they were disgusted by their own attack; the heavy shells being lost in the distance, while crew members hurried, placing the ogive projectiles and the propellant cases right behind. I took flight, worried about Azure, as I left behind me the artillery battery that fired their second barrage, expelling the brass case behind them.
While I was attempting to reach Azure, I could see the effect of the howitzers in the Canterlot Castle; their target… or so I imagined, because repeated explosions occurred in the exterior and interior of the city, blowing up the palace and houses, some roofs and bits of the structure being flung away. I felt a bit of relief knowing that Ponyville (And by extension, Azure) wasn’t the target, as I landed and hugged Azure back, happy that she was okay. It seemed that while I went to carry the soldier, she had stabilized another wounded soldier, that seemed to be unconscious, an IV drip hanging on a loose end of a house’s wall connected to his right arm. It was at this time that I heard gunfire again, very close to us. We looked at each other with a nervous expressions and dragged the pony away to the inside of a house, while I carried the bag of transparent liquid.
As we kept taking care of the armored pony, we suddenly heard rumbling outside in the streets. A few hours had passed since we covered our butts inside the structure to not get shot at. With all the care in the world, I peeked outside through a gaping hole in the wall, and I could see Solar Empire troops with golden and white uniforms, alongside tanks and half-tracks. A squint of my eyes made me realize that some kind of moth changeling with a heavily decorated marshal uniform was on an armored car behind the tanks and main assault, pointing forwards and inspiring the soldiers to a rally. The Lunar soldiers were caught by surprise and they retreated from the city, while flamethrower troopers of the SE threw Molotov cocktails into occupied buildings and flames erupted from their devices into any enemy pony in their sight. It was such an almighty and powerful spectacle that happened in front of my eyes, like if three hundred gladiators had broke through a thousand warriors to save the day, I could even hear epic music from one of the halftracks with speakers installed. I slowly got out and showed my uniform, indicating that I was friendly, and while they took the wounded royal guard away, one of the guys asked if I was an officer. I would have replied negatively, but I was cut short when explosions started again in our surroundings. I dove into the basement with Azure, like last time, although only half a minute of bombardment occurred. When we got out, I looked to where I flew some hours ago and black smoke erupted from the Lunar camp, while detonations of heavy guns continued, but on our side, firing at them, as explosions blasted the tents and pieces of cannons off.
As this counter attack occured, I could also spot a second pony, with a blue uniform that had yellow highlights and a fancy hat which seemed to be one of a General… in retrospect… his uniform seemed to look a lot like one of a NLR general, mostly because of the 90% blue color it had. Azure walked towards me and she seemed to agree silently with my assessment, guessing that this general officer was a captured NLR member or something similar, as we saw them advancing forwards, towards NLR positions down the road. Alongside the moth changeling marshal, there was a orange dragon with a gleaming white uniform and black, boxy glasses, and a tail that reminisced of a musical note; likewise, there was a pony that was heavily similar to Pinkie Pie, but with a dark blue uniform that almost looked navy-like, an officer cap of sorts, and a submachinegun… in fact, he kind of looked like an admiral; and, last in the group, looking at some maps alongside the marshal, was another officer, this one an Earth Pony, which I could barely guess was a Lieutenant Marshal judging his epaulettes, most likely subordinate of the moth changeling, with a dark yellow mane and a light green coat. It was at this time that my hope returned to my heart. A fast look to Azure’s expression confirmed me that she also felt the same way, with a slight, barely noticeable smile… Perhaps we could actually win this war…
The solar empire troops, although unable to corroborate if we were in fact Solar Empire troops (And I had to admit, we looked kinda suspicious with an random officer uniform without any other insignia), welcomed us since they found us while we were helping one of their soldiers. They kindly took us, and wanted us to stay with them as they got us some actual real food. Mind you, Equestrian MRE’s were awfully nice, even though some soldiers called them “Meal, rarely edible”, we found them surprisingly nice and better than some restaurants, but it was good eating food that was actually cooked by a chef mere minutes before, warm and ready to serve, and not prepared en-masse by some chefs that wondered when this package would be opened. While we were eating, some cadets asked us what we were and why we were here. We explained our situation and they told us that, while there was a mandatory drafting, we probably shouldn’t have been took that way. I knew that darned sergeant was shady god-fucking-damnit… But in any case we replied that we wanted to stay… not because we enjoy the war, but because… after seeing so many wounded, so many dead, so many broken, both on the outside and on the inside, we wanted to help as much as we can.
The cadets seemed to smile with pride at our comment of staying for helping others, and they cheered and applauded us; seemingly, that’s the reason they enlisted, they wanted to be like Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy and many other names and help save the day, be a part of the story and not a statistic, be helpful and aid others. This was the overall consensus on other soldiers, like if they were here to relieve the Mane Six from their duties, some even cheerfully joking like “Who needs these group of six? We’re gonna save the day today!” or “We’re the best of the best and we’re here to do the best and help everyone feel and be in their best!”, one even went a step further and said “THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE! THE POWER OF THE PROLETARIAT!” Some of them even sang some kind of fast-paced song with the lyrics of “I am - A super hero - Like a warrior now in action! - I am - A perfect hero - A super macho - Fighter and passion!”, though that’s the part I heard or actually understood
A sergeant, happy of the bout of pride and glory his men were feeling, gently took us towards one of the partially collapsed buildings, seemingly stabilized by a few logs and things, working as a makeshift barracks for soldiers to sleep. They told us that they had few beds because they were advancing, and since they had just ‘liberated’ this part of the town, this is the only thing they had. Surprisingly, that sergeant was in a good enough mood to apologize for the inconvenience, as we walked through the beds, our smol size being funny for the other ponies (Although they were very few to be honest, barely 5), before a pegasus with white coat and pink mane approached us, one which seemed surprisingly familiar “Hey, Pipsqueaks, remember me? You guys injected me some stuff and I stopped panicking and could get back to the Solar Empire advance… you guys saved my life” I looked at Azure confusedly, then I remembered that pony we injected Lorazepam and helped with her catatonic state. “O-Oh? Was that really you?” We asked almost in unison, happily knowing that we could help somepony. She nodded eagerly, and invited us to sleep on her bed “You can sleep with me, with what you did there, it’s the least I can do”
We looked at eachother, me and Azure, before we shrugged and proceeded to get onto her bed with her, we couldn’t be nitpicky anyways, it was war, or whatever this was, and as the sergeant said, beds were scarce commodities. She wrapped us with her body, proceeding to hug us tightly with both forehooves, as we took a decent nap for the first time… to be honest, even though she had her armor on, cuddling with her was really comfortable, and… for a very quick instant, it made me forget what was raging outside, as I only thought about how comfy I was, silently thanking the pone for allowing us to sleep with her. Azure being a bit more open and outright saying “T-thank you… y-you’re really nice…” to which she replied “Don’t worry about it, you’re like plushies anyways… i…it makes me forget of the battle…” before we all fell soundly asleep, the other soldiers in the barracks finding the scene surprisingly adorable despite being pretty much hardened veterans. Ponies are ponies, and despite being soldiers they still have that soft pony part

Day 4 of the War of the Two Sisters

Azure’s POV
The counteroffensive of the Solar Empire had managed to successfully get a hoofhold in Ponyville and expel the enemy NLR troops, or at least, that’s what I and Bashful were told by one of the sergeants in the camp. They were kind enough to let us sleep for a bit with the pegasus guardsmare, which we knew later on was called “Swift Victory”, after being awake or barely sleeping for maybe too long… was it two days? Anyways, it was in here when they explained to us what was currently going on, because our constant going to and fro the NLR camp and attending wounded ponies had left us savagely out-of-date with the current events… The soldier that told us everything that went on while he served said regiment seemed to have a cheerful tone in his voice, as if he was happy the tide was turned in our favor… who could blame him anyways?
They were the elite and widely known XVII Corps “Blackwatch”, attached to the 1st Equestrian Army “Celestial Guard”, although this particular cadet was from the XIX Naval Infantry “Marinestosstrupp”, explaining the reason of his naval camouflage uniform which looked kinda funny. There was also the VIII Airborne Mechanized Corps “Daredevils” and the foreign XII Corps “Sphinx’s Cavalry”, composed mostly of Saddle Arabia and Somnambula volunteers with a few changelings and sphinxes sprinkled in for good measure. These all were considered Celestia’s ‘Vieille Garde’, extremely capable and veteran. That was the army that had just broken through the NLR-owned Ponyville and clashed with them right now. We also were informed that we belonged to the V Infantry Battalion “Ponyville’s Fusiliers”, which was heavily pummeled during the first day of the NLR’s offensive, barely anyone remaining salvo us both, hastily put on an officer dress uniform… This actually caused several problems because nobody could verify we were part of the Solar Empire and they thought we were changeling spies.
Speaking of the New Lunar Republic’s attack… It was clear why they had won the first time; they had way more manpower than we had. They doubled us in the number of soldiers; having the 2nd Equestrian Army “Lunar Praetorians” and the 3rd Equestrian Army “Nightmare Moon”, two entire armies that defected to Princess Luna’s command, composed of various elite units like the XXXI Corps “Darkness Bringers”, or the XV Corps “Moonshine”, with the daring general “Moon Flower” spearheading the offensive, all this information provided by a Lunar defector and now a Solar Empire general, which was affectionately nicknamed Watermelon Rat (The last part probably a jab at his faction change, although the enlisted seemed to insist that was his real name), the one that had that fancy general uniform with blue and yellow on it. I looked at Bashful with a bit of a fearful expression, wondering what would happen if the NLR ultimately won.
They also explained to us that the moth changeling was named Red Flux, and was a Legend in the Solar Empire, considered like an immortal deity just below Celestia. The other ones that were accompanying him were Myoozik The Dragon (The dragon general with a shiny outfit and glasses), AndwhatIseeisme (That general who looked like Pinkie Pie, it seems it was a nickname for him), and Gray the First (The Earth Pony with blonde mane and tail, and a pristine white uniform of a Lieutenant Marshal). Outside there was also Princess Celestia with what seemed to be an aide-de-camp named Lightpoint, which was honestly very cutely following suit with the solar princess.
We stared at the events unfolding in front of us with mild incredulity. Ten hours ago we would’ve guessed that we had already lost since no army was in sight, and of sudden all these corps appeared to give a blow to the NLR? Were they teleported? In any case, I thanked the cadet for his explanation and so did Bashful, as we gave him a kind smile and exited the tent, while said cadet stayed inside to clean his rifle. It was a rather amazing sight the one we spectated; tanks were stationed in makeshift repair bays, as several crewmembers worked hard and diligently on the rhomboid metal machines. There were also some armored cars in the mix, and even technicals made from carts and railroad wagons. There were also newly constructed medical tents right outside Ponyville’s Hospital, farther away from the rest of the military buildings, and there was also another building expropriated by the soldiers and reinforced with metal plating and sandbags, used as a temporal headquarters, with the flag of Red Flux and Solar Empire waving victoriously on it, everything was suddenly active, but in the Solar Empire side, unlike last time where we just saw Lunar forces.
We walked a bit further into the frontline, attempting to carefully be on the lookout for any wounded soldier. While we did so I saw how Princess Celestia seemed to stare at us intently as if she remembered us… or perhaps she was looking at the battlefield and we were just in the way… Her aide-de-camp occasionally chatted with the respective commanders and officers, occasionally glancing at Celestia for instructions. Alongside them both I also saw a cute black coat-black mane-yellow eyes pegasus outfitted with a royal guard uniform and a spear, most likely a praetorian guard. She was honestly very adorable, even though she kept her stoic and serious visage on her face. I looked back at Bashful, who had already advanced a fair bit by now, and we started attending to the wounded ponies by the attack. Surprisingly, we mostly helped bat ponies, only one or two Celestial Guards in a dozen of Lunar Soldiers ratio. It seems the attack took them by complete surprise, as we slowly brought back the wounded, Lunar or Solar, back to the hospital. While in there, Nurse Redheart kindly gave us a couple of gas masks and new autoinjectors, indicating that many soldiers were wounded by them, pointing at the various troops of all kinds with bandaged eyes and breathing heavily
We thanked her assistance and we promptly left the building, with a cute wave from the white nurse Earth Pony, her pristine white coat stained with the blood of the injured, but in a good way, since that meant she was doing her damnedest to help them live. As we went outside, we could also hear aircraft flying over our heads, mostly wooden biplanes, that scouted the battlefield and made circles in the air, providing air coverage. We had to admit that, despite the New Lunar Republic troops not attacking us, we felt safer when in the company of our fellow troopers, as if they were protecting us, and it was half-right, they were protecting all, including themselves. It was a cohesive group that didn’t want anyone to harm one of them, and that’s what I liked about this Solar advance… We felt like… with hope…
While Red Flux corps took the lead and secured the town with his tanks and artillery, we kept going through the alleys and sideways, in search of anyone in need. It seems that the Watermelon Rat officer was providing a morale boost to his soldiers by indicating that there was a secret weapon just in case the Lunar forces retake the town. I saw the determination and hope in the eyes of the young ponies armed with guns and melee weapons, hope that this war would be over soon and they’d be back with their families and reconstructing the cities. But there was something in particular that made our bodies cold and our hearts sink down… while we were helping ponies, we saw the dead body of a Solar Empire soldier among the bunch… it would’ve been a regular sight… but what wasn’t regular was the uniform… this soldier was another combat medic, just like us… shot in the head, the bullet going right through the red cross, his lifeless eyes staring at us like the warning of something imminent. “B-b-bashy… l-look…”

Day 5 and 6 of the War of the Two Sisters

Bashful’s POV
We immediately went back to Princess Celestia when we saw that traumatic scene, although we didn’t have the luxury to talk with her Highness and instead we expressed what we saw to a major general that was in the area… I’m not sure if it was the dragon or the Pinkie Pie-looking-like one, but I remember that we went back to where we found the body, and a soldier, that worked as a forensics detective before the war, concluded that it seemed like an execution instead of killed by crossfire or in battle… That made us feel even worse than we originally did… attacking and killing innocent combat medics was not allowed by the Geneighva Conventions, especially if they were unarmed, like this one. His medical saddlebag was also stolen and he seemed to have been beaten prior to the fatal shot. The pegasus from earlier offered us to sleep with her again, as the sergeant told us to keep quiet at the base and not go out for the moment, the same order being given to other medical corps to not go into the battlefield if it meant them being targeted by priority.
After that day, the generals and Princess Celestia herself were, expectedly, shocked at this revelation. It was one thing to accidentally kill a medic, not knowing they were one, or even missing their shot. But he was clearly identified as one, and, considering he was murdered like that… I was sitting on a chair since the officers told us to remain there for the moment as they figured out what was going out. After a few minutes, which were like hours for us, a staff sergeant came to us “We received a letter from an NLR envoy, it says that since we bombarded a hospital in possession of the NLR by accident in Canterlot yesterday, they won’t respect any international convention…”
I looked at Azure fearfully, and hugged her, not wanting to lose my only and best friend to this cruel skirmish. Some days ago they treated us nicely because we were medics, and now they were attempting to murder us on purpose? “I’m sorry…” The sergeant continued, looking down in shame. This basically meant that we had the same chances of survival as a regular hoof soldier, perhaps even less… This downed quite a bit our mood, but Azure gently poked me by the shoulder and she smiled a forced one, but one nonetheless “Well… we want to help those in need, right? We’re going to keep doing that even if it endangers us… I’d like to save people… amidst this… cruel scene…”
I looked at her with a mix of amazement and confusion… she really was thinking that? But my thoughts were harshly interrupted when the whistling sound of enemy shells was heard across the camp. I quickly grabbed her by her hoof and dove under a tank, imagining the explosions would start soon… but they didn’t… the whistling stopped abruptly and then resumed when a new shell came… I looked out… and I saw a yellow-green deadly mist starting to cover the entire base, as someone screamed at the top of their lungs “GAS, GAS, GAS!”
Azure promptly jammed the gas mask on her face, tightly securing it on the back of her head. I did the same, putting on the gas mask in a hurry as the yellow cloud of death expanded. Our vision was impaired by the usage of such tools, but we preferred that before dying a cruel and unusual death. Imagining that nothing would explode, and taking our job as medical units, we ran out of the tank with our extra gas masks and put them on the few soldiers that were caught in the blue, dragging them away from the clouds and using water from a canteen to clean the sulfur mustard off them. As Azure treated this patient individually, I went back to hand out gas masks to other ponies and drag the injured out of the poisonous nightmare, while Pegasus in the sky attempted to flush away the heavier-than-air toxic gas
At this time, an alarm sounded, this one indicating that we were under attack. They had gassed the entire town in a chemical warfare maneuver, and now they were going to enact their offensive. I went back to Azure and pulled him out of the hapless soldier gasping for air, letting other professionals treat them, as we went to the frontlines to aid whoever we could. It was such a surreal and nightmarish sight; as ponies shrieked because of the mustard gas, while others, that had put on the gas mask themselves before the toxic weaponry touched them, looked like devils out of this world; their faces barely visible and their clothes ragged, firing their weapons around in blind madness. Some of them straight hit and clubbed each other with maces, walking sticks, their own guns, or swords, engaging in melee combat inside the thick yellow fog that didn’t let anyone see. It was complete madness. I think that some of these soldiers were actually hitting their own teammates. Out of sudden, I lost grasp of Azure as something charged towards me and tossed me to the side, my head knocking hard against what seemed to be a lampost. I looked above me, my vision blurry and my head hazy, and saw a Lunar unicorn, his uniform stained heavily with blood and mud, and with a spiked mace on his left hoof, looking at me menacingly. I raised my paws to defend myself from any incoming hit, imagining this was going to hurt, as the Lunar pony raised the mace on top of his head, ready to strike me
Five gunshots, that’s all it took for the soldier to fall down dead alongside me, his body not moving anymore. I saw to the left side and I could spot Azure with the RA-15 rifle in her arms, pointing at the Lunar bat pony, the spent casings falling to her side as she stared with anger at the soldier. I was sure that she had fired at him even when he was on the ground… she… she saved my life that day… Soon, the heavy fighting had stopped, and the cloud of gas dissipated away, the Solar Empire troops finally realizing what was going on and falling back to a more defensive position in the heart of the city. It suddenly went from a clusterfuck of people stabbing at each other with bayonets to urban warfare as everyone took cover inside houses and structures, or the corners of buildings, some of them in the sewers with their water-cooled machine guns pointing out towards the street. The fighting in the war-torn city was intense, as the roads looked more like the surface of the moon, with craters everywhere product of the bombardment that mortars, field guns, artillery, and howitzers exercised on enemy positions.
It was the worst kind of warfare ever, the one that involved fighting in what once was a place where ponies lived in harmony and co-existed, fighting in a town or city was, to my knowledge, the most dangerous kind of battle you could ever be… Solar Empire troops and New Lunar Republic soldiers frequently traded gunshots with each other, the positions being changed abruptly as Lunar forces advanced, only to be repelled back by the SE, but back at the Lunar’s lead. I stayed cowering inside a building, trying my best to stay out of fire’s reach. Tanks and armored cars were being destroyed by simple soldiers in the buildings throwing grenades bunched together, causing massive explosions, or by anti-tank rifles hiding in the rubble, or by Molotov cocktails that deflagrated on the roof, the combustible liquid seeping through the cracks of the armor. Heavy howitzers were even towed into roads and streets to completely annihilate buildings. I could see from a hole in the wall how bat troops attempted to retake a building that was being fought over like 4 times in a row and heavily fortified
In the air, there was a different dramatic scene occurring right above our heads, but one that could easily decide whether we lived or we died on this battlefield; fighter aircraft biplanes, and some monoplanes too, were waging war in the skies, constantly making dogfighting maneuvers either to get into a comfortable firing position for their main guns or actively attempting to avoid such thing to happen for their enemies behind them. As such, I could see how aircraft painted in bright colors make alley-oops, immelmans, split s’s, and defensive spirals, some enemy aircraft being downed, with their engines on multicolor fire, as they plummeted towards the ground, trying their very best to crash land in a semi-safe position so they would only have bruises and broken bones instead of death. One of them in particular, a twin-engined bomber of the Solar Empire, barely crashed into our apartment complex, doing a sharp gain in altitude to avoid exactly that, stalling, and crashing outside Ponyville with a thunderous explosion, as everyone fought without any particular realization of that scene, Anti-Aircraft cannons firing sky high to down the interceptors, their rhythmic “pom pom pom pom pom pom” noise being easily recognizable
On our left side, in the exterior of Ponyville, an armored train of the Solar Empire had arrived, like some kind of behemoth that accidentally came late to the party but tried their best to change the tide of the war. Their turret guns revolved in their axis and destroyed buildings in a blaze, followed by a detonation, and the water-cooled machineguns kept firing at anything that got closer and wasn’t wearing Solar Empire uniforms. And with said train, came a new contingent of soldiers from the passenger wagon, with their morale sky high, either because they wanted to defend Equestria or because they had the armored train as direct-fire support
While all of this occurred I saw the face of our teammates, of our allies, of our brothers in arms. The NLR troops were overrunning us, but they stood their ground, ready for the strike of the bat ponies of the night. Their expressions seemed to scream ‘This is our land, they don’t belong’, a mix of determination, rage, and fiery fury highly concentrated in their veins, as they fought for what they thought was right. They heard Marshal’s Red Flux orders, ones that said “Ponyville shall not fall!”, and so they stood, and followed the command, trading their blood for the homeland. In their minds, Ponyville would never give in, and they’d force the NLR troops into retreat.
Facing the volleys of enemy guns, Equestrian soldiers dashed through the frontlines, avoiding being found in the middle of the streets otherwise they’d be long dead before their head even touched the ground, if it remained intact anyways. They moved with coordination and tactics, which I think were named “FISH and CHIPS” (Fighting in Someone’s House and Causing Havoc in People’s Streets).), breaching or sometimes outright demolishing buildings to get rid of enemy troops. The Sugarcube Corner took a direct hit on the tower above as it plummeted down into an enemy tank by the almighty force of gravity that affected everybody. Many nations around the world were most likely watching us, spectating silently this collision between two forces that had their morale sky high, wanting to die for their Princess, standing against the typhoon wave that represented this uprising. The start of this war was like a trail of powder being lit all across Equestria, which then exploded in a deathly shockwave that brings us to this very day, where everybody wants to fight, everybody wants to win, everybody wants to protect their loved ones and bring an end to this war.
It all seemed to give a single sentence, energetically, vehemently, expressed without any kind of stuttering, both from the NLR or SE troops by their own motives:
EQUESTRIA SHALL PREVAIL

Final day (7) of the War of the Two Sisters

Azure’s POV
I was hiding with Bashful on Twilight’s Friendship CastLe… at the very least it had the exterior walls intact and provided us with valuable cover for our flanks to not catch enemy bullets. The occasional usage of flamethrowers by the New Lunar Troops, which engulfed entire buildings into a focused hellhole, scared the heck out of me, as I didn’t want that at any time some firebat (As they called themselves) let out that blue fire inside the building, incinerating everybody and everything. Thankfully, our defenders were aware of the dangers of such weapons, and they had managed to repel two firebats that attempted to raid our makeshift building fortress.
Meanwhile, we also had our own means to repel the enemy onslaught at our positions; we had water-cooled PCW-45 (Princess Celestia’s Weaponry) machineguns, a wide variety of semi-automatic rifles and medium machineguns like the Stahlhelm Industries 245 in about every window this castle had, raining lead down upon advancing enemy infantry and keeping their heads down with a volley of suppressive fire, the floor inside the building starting to fill with hot brass casings. Thankfully we wore boots and gloves, otherwise, it would’ve been very uncomfortable to be there. Aside from these infantry weapons, someone somehow managed to break in an anti-aircraft cannon and re-arm it inside, effectively placing the heavy fixed weapon inside the building as extra firepower, and this procedure was also done with a small 47mm trench cannon. The ammunition and rations were brought from the back wall, which was mouse-holed so soldiers could access the Friendship Castle without being attacked.
We stayed deep inside, me and Bashful, treating some wounded that were dragged there, using an IV drip and blood so they could remain alive… their condition was stable, but the fact that we were being besieged by the Lunar troops didn’t allow us to effectively carry the wounded to a safer place, and I was aware that the Lunar troops were killing wounded soldiers… or at least, that’s what they told us. As we stayed with the injured guards, trying to calm them down, I could hear a sharp scream, almost at the same time one of the machine guns stopped firing. I looked through the doorway to the windows and saw one of the MG gunners screaming in pain, with a hoof on his neck as he was bleeding. Another combat medic, which I didn’t know who he was, rushed to him before I could react, and when he crouched to get better access he was shot through the window on the head, falling dead next to the machine gunner. A third soldier that was farther away was also shot from the same window, and some of them signaled that there was a sniper outside. I crawled prone to the window, avoiding poking out, as I picked a helmet and non-verbally told Bashful to go upstairs. He complied and readied his AP-14, the last thing I saw was his running figure disappearing on the stairs. I waited for several seconds, imagining that he was preparing himself, and after a few minutes, I heard a few stomping from upstairs. I nodded to myself mentally and, with the spare helmet I had found, I put it at the end of my gun and slowly made it poke out of the window, as if there was a soldier peeking outside, unaware of the deadly marksman out there.
The bluff seemed to not work at first, as it took quite a bit for the sniper to realize, but then, I heard a sharp detonation outside that seemed to stand out from the rest, and the helmet went flying away, a gunshot on the front where the horn would’ve been. Almost instantly, with very few milliseconds of waiting, a second gunshot, this one much, much louder than the first, was heard on the second floor of Twilight’s Castle… Silence erupted for a bit, a drama within the bigger drama of the conflict… before two consecutive taps were heard and I saw Bashful walking downstairs. I was about to hug him tightly, thankful he was still alive, and knowing he had just neutralized the sharpshooter before out of sudden a giant wall of glowing white fire appeared in front of the castle, most likely something magical, the temperature raising in a spike as that colossal white-orange separation manifestated itself. Shortly afterwarsd, a non-commissioned officer bustled in through the mouse-hole in the back and told us to retreat, and that the position couldn’t be taken any longer. We hastily complied with his orders and dragged the wounded away, using our engines to fly out of there. It would’ve been an awful idea considering, but there was a crowd of pegasus flying away too, covering fire, allowing us to escape…
On the ground, I could see the Marshal Red Flux exchanging shots with the Lunar ponies in a street, three field cannons blocking the bottleneck as he and his army corps bravely stayed to make sure our escape was sound, their final stand. It was not about Canterlot, it was not about the Empire for them, it was about the men, who fought for them. They were keeping us, and many other retreating soldiers, safe and sound as we left Ponyville’s borders, holding their ground till the final platoon. Our hope of actually winning the war was already lost, but the hope of surviving and helping as much as we could was still high as ever, as we flew with the other flying ponies, some of them Wonderbolts, toward wherever they were going… A glance behind me made me check Bashful was still flying with me, and in the background, I saw the city of Ponyville burn, going down in flames as two worlds collided. An attack by napalm from twin-engined biplanes of the NLR made the scene all too devastating, as a combination of yellow and blue flames erupted from the city from the firebombing…
This battle was lost… And most likely… the war was too… Our strongest army, composed of basically every able pony in the Army, whether they were from the navy, air force, army, or even militia, despite their brave efforts to not let Ponyville or Canterlot, or Equestria in itself fall, has been bested in warfare by the numerically advantageous opponent. At the very end, I saw Red Flux forces, alongside all his high command, leaving out of Ponyville, retreating while the Lunar forces were chasing them down. It’s the end, the war has been lost
A glance at my comrades in arms confirmed my suspicions, everybody flying away had an expression of sadness, anger, pity, or depression, sometimes even all of them at the same time… A few were crying because of their loved ones lost in this senseless conflict, while others were stoic, hiding deep down their expressions, becoming numb and darkened by the horrors of war, some more didn’t care about hiding their depressive facade, realizing that there was nothing that could be done. The loss of Ponyville to Lunar hooves has caused great consternation in our ranks, and it was clear that this was an important battle we had to win, but we lost. Rosettes of anti-aircraft artillery started exploding upon us as the bat ponies even tried to down us from the sky while we ran away, some comrades falling prey to the 20/30/50mm Anti-Aircraft Artillery. I dove to the ground with Bashful and many others, avoiding the projectiles, mostly out of survival instincts, because our minds were clouded by what this defeat represented…
Behind us, in the Friendship Castle property of Twilight, I could see how, at the top, the flag of Friendship and Unity with Twilight’s Cutie Mark, and the Solar Empire flag, were both taken away and dropped to the ground, then replaced by a New Lunar Republic flag that hanged victoriously like a mocking symbol to our struggle to maintain our positions.

Serial escalation and armistice

Bashful’s POV
We were camping at least two kilometers away from Ponyville, in some patch of forest where we could hide easily. I was trying my best to treat the wounded soldiers left from the carnage in that urban conflict, one of them being the pegasus that was catatonic from way earlier. Azure was still sleeping, her way to cope with was what currently going on… But all of sudden, a bright light erupted in the sky, one that was like a combination of yellow, white and then gradually transforming into orange. Those who were able to walk and capable of looking out of the forest did so. I extended my wings and slowly flew to the highest branch of a nearby tree, wanting to see what was happening… But when I did, I instantly felt terror in my body, being frozen in the spot…
That glow on the sky, which almost everybody presumed to be an explosion from some kind of bomb that airburst in the sky, was actually a gigantic ball of fire, that completely covered the sky as if Tartarus was opening wide to punish us for our crimes against ponykind. The clouds disappeared as they were hit by the shockwave that came afterward, my tiny frail body not being a match for the invisible force and being flung like some kind of pebble, thankfully I attempted to hold on to anything and make a semi-graceful landing. “Ky-kyaa…” I let out a groan as I looked around… tents were blown away, tanks were flipped around to their back, and soldiers were tossed around away from the bright light. I tried to stand up, and realized that Azure was tossed into a bush. She shook her body, trying to clean herself, then she asked me in a shocked and confused expression, having a very rough wake up “W-what the FUCK was that?!” I had no idea how to respond to her, no kind of weapon we had as far as I knew had such destructive power, before out of sudden the alarm flooded the noise of wounded and working soldiers, the alarm of enemy Lunar troops in the vicinity
I picked my weapon in a hurry, and so did Azure, but what we saw was unexpected: The troops were unarmed, they didn’t even have any kind of armor to begin with, and their face seemed like if they had just registered something horrible and undescribable “T-thank goodness we found you! P-please… I-I know we-we’re enemies… b-but please… HELP US… YOU GUYS GOT TO HELP US!” One of the Lunarists even fell down and pretty much begged us. We looked at each other in confusion, before they decided to explain “C-C-Celestia… w-well… s-she was angry… of t-the devastation… a-and attacked Luna… b-but Luna counter-attacked… a-and well… n-now t-they’re Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon… PLEASE HELP… WE HAVE TO STOP THAT… FOR UNITY” They said, it was clear they were telling the truth; the trauma that their voices were laced with was not something one could easily fake, one of them even didn’t say anything, [WARNING, GRIMDARK] he was just… staring at us… with lifeless eyes and blood sprayed in his face… These news seemed to have caused a great impact on the minds of our teammates, their eyes were wide open and their irises shrunk to the size of pinpricks… Nightmare Moon? Daybreaker? Those were an Elements of Harmony-levels threat. Nevertheless, we knew that this meant we had to do something, otherwise Equestria, and perhaps the whole world could end up being destroyed.
With some hoof gestures, the commander of our outpost decided that we should help them. Everybody in the outpost became active again, helping others recover from what just happened and trying to get them to move. It was like a very disorganized orchestra getting ready for the grand performance, although this time it wasn’t meant to wage war, but to actually stop it. I picked my medical saddlebag and anything else we were going to carry, nudging Azure to come with me. Orders from the officers said that some would stay to care for the wounded, which would be organized into a specific place (Because the hasty retreat left us very spread), while the rest would attempt their best at stopping both Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon.
The soldiers bunched up, ready for orders, and without much due, we packed our things and got into the transports, those who couldn’t, going on hoof. I got into one of the trucks, while Azure dove in next to me, and we went to Ponyville back again. The road was bumpy, filled with craters and destroyed vehicles or artillery pieces broken down into nothing particularly functional. Alongside us was one of the bat ponies, and his state was deplorable; he was looking down with eyes of a thousand yards, hugging himself tightly with his forehooves, breathing heavily, almost in a fetal position. “O-our b-b-beloved Luna i-is gone….” I tried to approach him softly and hugged him, alongside other few soldiers. We might be troopers, but we were also ponies, and, despite what just happened, we cared for each other, especially at this moment. The poor bat pony made some cute soft “Eeee”s, appreciating our kindness. Fluttershy would be proud
Soon, we arrived at the place we were forced to leave with our tails between our legs, with the intent to help these same people that had just kicked us from there in the first place. We were stopped by a bunch of nervous Lunar cadets, before the Lunarist that was having an anxiety attack on our truck some hours before sprang out of the truck and promptly extended both forehooves “Nononono! F-friend! F-friend! We’re going to help!” They looked at each other, pondering the offer, but since their fear to these two Godly beings was bigger than their fear of us, they let us inside to unite with the Lunarists. When we got into the Friendship Castle, they were grouped in front of the crystal building, trying to shout and make themselves visible to the raging princesses. I got out of the truck with Azure, and literally everyone who saw at the sky stared in awe and panic at the conflagration occuring high above, as gigantic beams of magic were fired around, some yellow and white, and the other ones blue and black. High above us there was a warzone and devastation not known to any of us, to the point that our puny playtime with cannons and muskets was different to this level of power. Colossal explosions emanated above, as the sky took different colors based on who made the attack
On the left, was Nightmare Moon, a fully dark being with a glowing ethereal mane of constellations and stars, slit pupils, armor, and a twisted smile that seemed to be the one of a nightmare… but the one we were fighting for, on the right side, wasn’t any different; a glistening white coat, with a mane of fire that was hot enough to be felt his warm embrace on the ground. She also had regalia adorned with spikes and pointy ends, and her sclera was dark while her irises looked like the start of a flame. Everyone was unsure what to do… how we could even stand a chance with them? They could easily crush us like insects… so, instead of actually fighting, we decided to actually make ourselves visible… so perhaps seeing their subjects wanting to stop this at once would do something. Pegasus flew towards the Friendship Castle, taking cover behind it yet at the same time trying their best to shout and attempt peace. They weren’t dumb enough to go directly into the war and be fried by any of those beams the diameter of a house. I think even being close to Daybreaker would result in instant death. “PLEASE, PLEASE STOP, FOR UNITY! UNITY! PLEASE STOP! YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO DESTROY EVERYONE!”
We tried to make ourselves as visible as posible, firing our guns in the air and shouting. Some others tried to make signs or anything that could have them both look at. But it seemed to have no further effect, they still kept fighting, dodging, and destroying everything. More and more soldiers gathered, alongside civilians. An odd group for sure; there were naval infantrymen; paratroopers, air force soldiers, sailors, army guys, civilian paramedics, and regular populace, both from either side, and I think there were nobles too… It was at this time when I saw among our combined files the Element Bearers. Twilight in particular was utterly shocked at what was occurring, she was just as terrified as us, if not even worse. Dealing with Daybreaker and Nightmare Moon was not an easy task. When she was about to get herself going and attempt to stop them both though, someone among the bunch shouted “WATCH OUT! TAKE COVEEER!” And we saw a bit too late how one of the beams had been deflected by the force field of one of the princesses and went straight of us
The explosion it caused was catastrophic; it hit the side of the Friendship Castle, where a Solarist tank was with a few of Lunar troops on top. They never had a chance; the combined force of the magical beam with the ammunition stored inside caused a massive conflagration that blew the tank into a thousand pieces, which also meant a million of shrapnel flying around. I was standing too close to the tank at that moment and was sent flying away, hitting my head hard against the side of a house. I fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes, my vision starting to become foggy and darken by the impact… everything hurt… and I could feel something cold in my leg… I saw the burnt out tank and the partially destroyed Friendship Castle, [WARNING, GRIMDARK] and it was all chaos, with corpses and wounded stretched across the town; even the Mane Six bearers didn’t come out without scratch… and then… I saw Azure… she was lying on the ground, motionless, face down, with several injuries… then my vision went darker and darker, and I lost conciousness, the last thing I saw being a soldier that rushed to me…

End of conflict, peace agreements. The war is over
Azure’s POV
I groggily woke up from wherever I was, unable to actually recognize anything around me, although to be fair, my eyes were starting to adjust to the bright light above me and the white all around… It was when I looked to the side, seeing one of these odd monitor thingies used in hospitals, that I realized where I was… or at least, had a fair guess of it. One of my hind legs was bandaged in the thigh section, and my left arm had an IV drip connected to it. I was about to get up before a nurse came in and saw that I was awake, proceeding to explain to me what had happened
During the fight between Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker, it seems that a magic bolt (It’s unclear who it was) was directed to a nearby ammunition carrier tank nearby, exploding in a deadly conflagration. This was what caught the attention of both angry princesses, as they almost instantly went back to their original forms and tried to help, deeply apologizing, knowing that because of them many more had been injured or died. I couldn’t understand a bit of what the nurse said, but she seemed to imply that the royal diarchy used some kind of forbidden magic, alongside Princess Cadance, Prince Shining Armor, and the Elements of Harmony, to revive about everyone that died in the war… or so I understood, I couldn’t quite understand what she meant in that part. She also mentioned that I had a memory loss from what occurred… and when I thought about it… I didn’t remember that much other than attempting to drag people off to safety with Bashful… she said I remembered that because it’s the thing I did most, and luckily, other… less pleasant situations… had been forgotten by the concussion we suffered on our heads
She slowly urged me to stand, disconnecting my IV drip and pulling out the venous catheter
(Which kinda hurt), then slowly aiding me to walk a bit as I decided to visit Bashful, which thankfully, this nurse made sure to tell me he was fine, although hit his head quite badly. When I entered the room he was in, I could see him in a medical robe, trying to get out of bed, his paws and hooves slowly touching the ground as he tried his best to not fall stupidly onto the ground. I giggled a bit, and that’s when he realized I was here alongside a nurse and blushed, finally reaching the ground… it seems that his bed was taller than mine… doesn’t matter, I’m gonna call him smol for the rest of the week.
We approached each other slowly, and hugged and nuzzled caringly, the nurse making little cute “daaaaw” noises behind me as I showed affection to my best friend, gently licking his cheek. “Are you okay? Nothing hurts?” I asked him, and he shook his head “Um… well… a-aside from the fact I t-think I’m having the worst headache in the history of ponykind… nothing so far… I’m fine… although I don’t quite r-remember much… everything is foggy…” He replied to me half-jokingly and half-seriously, as he giggled and smiled warmly toward me. It was at this time when an officer, or at least some high guy, came through the door and whispered something to the nurse, then they both took us somewhere. We weren’t sure what they were doing, but we just followed along. It was when we walked through the halls and rooms that I realized we were on Canterlot’s Castle… it had seen better days, for sure, but it seemed like it held quite well.
They lead us to some kind of big room, with drawers and some ponies that… reminded me of Rarity actually; manipulating sewing machines and pinpricks, while they seemed to make beautiful clothes and uniforms. The officer kindly and warmly told us to wait, as the nurse left to treat other patients. A bit later, maybe 30 minutes, these sewing ponies told us to go inside another, smaller room connected to the one we were before, as they asked us to wear some clothes… I vaguely remember them from my memories with Bashful, attempting to save ponies… it was fully white, with red crosses, and Solar Empire symbols. It looked kinda fancy… We complied as Bashful proceeded to put on his uniform first, which was exactly like mine but had his name in a golden rectangle on the chest, which I think was a name tag, on the left side of his chest, right above the pocket, and I went to put on mine, although accidentally stepping on one of the uniform’s arms and falling to my side in a bit of a funny way. The assistant and Bashful shared a chuckle as I klutzy stood up again, fixing the uniform. Then the assistant mare gave us some caps to wear with the clothing we just put on… it was at this time when I realized that I remembered a white helmet with red crosses and not a white cap when I was with Bashful… perhaps this was some kind of dress uniform?
I looked at myself with the uniform and the cap, and I let out a little ‘Woah’ of excitement. I looked rather pretty in this military uniform of sorts! Although I couldn’t guess the rank… was I… a lieutenant general? Why I even had an officer uniform if I think I was never in military training? Did I do parkour across the military ranks? Oh well… Bashful seemed just as confused as me, so that was a good thing; it meant I didn’t miss something that the nurse was explaining. Shortly afterward, the cute assistant mare prompted us to go to a room where there were many others with varying fancy uniforms in line, waiting for something. They told us to stay with them in the same room and get in line, and I looked at them with a bit of confusion… I think I could remember them, but I was aided when someone said through a speaker their respective name… Marshal Red Flux… General Watermelon Rat, Lieutenant General Myoozik, Major General AndwhatIseeisme… Those were the ones I could kinda remember, and there were also others I couldn’t quite recognize or that I never saw… was that a draconequus?…
Then, out of sudden, Princess Celestia came from one of the doors, accompanied by a white-coat yellow-maned advisor with a blue jacket, and a black-coat with black-mane and yellow eyes praetorian guard, both pegasus and with medals in their clothes. I stayed rigid just like Bashful, trying to make our best military impression and just roll with whatever was going on, as she walked in front of each one of us, smiling towards everyone warmly. Her aura seemed so calm and nice… was she proud of us? And then, she spoke with a soft yet firm voice “For those who went above and beyond for the Solar Deity, drawing from the power of the sun itself to bring balance to the fight against the Lunar Insurrection… I award them this medal” A faint glow appeared in front of her as she materialized a fancy box, which she promptly opened, revealing some medals. These were the symbol of the Solar Empire, but with an added red circle and sun rays… it was glowing brightly, and it shone under the light of her horn… it was… pretty…
She approached each and every one of the officers in line, picking the medal with her telekinesis and placing them on the officers in formation, affixing the shiny golden object on their uniform with the pin, making sure it fits perfectly and it was not inclined or something. Every pony that received the medal had a sudden boost in morale, looking high at the sky with determined eyes and a rigid, statue-like posture, their pride felt like an imposing aura from them. When she approached us, she looked at us for a few seconds, seemingly confused too as to why we were there. It kinda felt as if we had gone to a party to which we were uninvited. But she looked at our red cross uniform and she smiled again, pinning the badge first on Bashful and afterward on me, as I smiled happily like a cute kitty. She seemed to find our expression of joy amusing, gently petting us lightly, before continuing on giving medals to others on our right.
When the ceremony was over and everyone left to their respective quarters, we wandered around the castle, both because we had never ever been inside this building, despite it being partly damaged, and because we wanted to see what was happening… What we saw was anticlimactic… I could see Lunarists hanging out with Solarists as if they were friends, even though I had thought we were at war. They also seemed to get along quite nicely, chanting and singing songs about Unity and stuff… while probably having too much cider… perhaps being forced to work together to not have Princess Celestia and Princess Luna destroy the world made an excellent way for peace? Wait… what if the princesses actually had done that on purp- “Aww, you guys are some cute kitties! You guys were the ones that saved both NLR and SE troops in the battlefield? These ones who disregarded any kind of difference and helped anyone they found?”
“Uh…” Bashful started, partly confused, and I continued for him “I believe so? I think…” And then, out of sudden, the bat pony approached us and started petting us both, probably way too happy and drunk “Awww… I know you guys are from the SE, but we’re gonna keep you both as pets of the NLR” I was now even more confused, letting out a little “Nyaa?” that probably meant something like “Wait whaat?”, most likely personifying that meme of “Bad touch bad touch stranger danger”… but honestly his petting felt nice and comfortable, and I couldn’t help but purr lightly and contently… We weren’t sure what was going on, but we were happy that everything ended and things went back to normal
