We really don’t know if there’s a Cutie Mark-based caste system in Equestria or not. Perhaps there’s a whole legion of Talentless ponies relegated to the shadows and service industries put in place to make life more plush for the more privileged.
 
Also, Starlight Glimmer’s hypocrisy regarding her power is necessary because she is the only one who knows the spell to remove Cutie Marks in the first place, and likely one of very few who even have the power to employ it. That regarding her mane style, on the other hand, is not so forgivable. Every aspect of her sub-culture is a caricature of the very real and gross flaws of Marxism/neo-Progressivism. Equality cannot be forced. Its existence among living beings is unnatural and contrary to evolution.

So, she’s suppressing people’s natural talents–except NOT her own. Therefore, not equal. In a sense, she’s really no different from the smug super in a world of losers, given the fact that she assigned herself to be the leader. After all, if they were equal, why would it have to be the one who found the “Staff of Sameness” who got to use it instead of taking turns? And you’ll notice that her hairstyle is unique, despite rigidly enforcing it on others, for another example.
 
So, no, there’s no justifying it except petty jealousy and hypocrisy. And they can’t even pull the racism/bigotry card as in X-Men, being that they’re all ponies and, to the small extent that racial rivalries exist at all, unicorns are definitely on top of the pile. (Not that I think the X-Men metaphor works at all; I mean, if [minority] could shoot super lasers from their eyes, mind control the President, or crush people alive, hell yes I’d want to know where they were and what they were capable of at all times.)
