Some people are sensitive to aspartame, but unless you have a very specific metabolic disorder, it’s quite safe. In fact, because of the controversies surrounding it, it is probably the most studied artificial sweetener. There’s over 40 years of data for it, and if you instead use saccharin, over 100 years.
 
Also, the FDA isn’t shy about banning artificial sweeteners (see cyclamate, which has been banned and unbanned in other countries a few times). There are many to choose from and all are cheaper than real sugar, so if any data actually points towards danger they pull the plug pretty quickly. There IS evidence of saccharin causing bladder cancer in rats, however there’s no evidence that it affects humans similarly (and, again, >100 years of human data). Rats have different urine conditions, which seems to account for it. Rodent models are not that great for a lot of things, actually…
 
There’s nothing wrong with avoiding it, though.
