Description

It’s been a while that The Cutie Map has seen the light of the day, so it seems there’s nothing to talk about the episode. I think it has something to talk about. I really wanted to talk about it because I’ve never seen someone writing “I like it. However…”, so I’m gonna comment the next one. I don’t know how many downvotes I’m gonna receive just for doing this, maybe too much, but I’d like to comment this.

There are movies that people usually can’t stand because one scene or one detail, one detail that can ruin the movie according to them. Some people hated Prometheus because of the characters. Some people hated the Star Wars prequels because of the script, the CGI and the Lucas’ moves (I’m not surprised). Some people really hated Titanic because the romance story was so simple. With these examples you get the idea, because I’m gonna talk about one scene from the first part of The Cutie Map. I’m not gonna talk about the villain (who is not really interesting) or the music or the characters. I’m gonna talk about one scene, one moment that cringes me soooo much that prevents me to like this episode.

One thing that really shocked me is people really loves The Cutie Map episodes. I didn’t hear anything that started with “One thing I don’t like…”, so I’m gonna comment one scene which is a MAJOR problem. Here’s Pinkie Pie. This character never learns from her lessons (Baby Cakes, Pinkie Pride), and she is finally to getting to a point where she is extremely annoying. I’ll go with the fact that she can see the difference between those smiles…

…and this smile:

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/3/32/Pinkie_Pie_big_grin_S4E09.png/revision/latest?cb=20140113103248

I’ll go with that. What I have a hard time going with is that Pinkie Pie, at the beginning of the episode, says that she has a bad feeling, because these smiles are fake. Later we see for the first time Starlight Glimmer and Pinkie Pie makes clear that she doesn’t trust her. Ok, that’s great, Pinkie. I’m starting to like you. But 10 minutes later, some ponies said that they misses their cutie marks and, later Pinkie Pie says that to Starlight. And guess what happens: Bad ending for everypony… except in Part 2.

This has to be the DUMBEST move I’ve ever seen from a character in a movie or TV show ever: Telling the villain that she doesn’t trust her and then she tells her a secret and finally everypony was caught. This scene makes Prometheus looks more realistic. There are some mistakes made by Pinkie Pie in the past, but this has to be her worst move.

I’ve seen this episode in April and, because of that, I was soooooo angry that I couldn’t control myself and I’ve made a rant video with no constructive commentary, but destructive, with curses, bad words, etc. A few days later I’ve seen that video again and I’ve deleted it because that wasn’t me, but I really wanted to talk about that scene because the writers made this. They made Pinkie Pie dumb because of the story, not because of the characters.

There’s a pair of rules from Pixar storytelling that says the following:

“You gotta identify with your situation/characters, can’t just write ‘cool’. What would make YOU act that way?”

“If you were you character, in this situation, how would you feel? Honesty lends credibility to unbelievable situations.”

The writers didn’t feel anything for Pinkie Pie. They thought that “she’s the comedian character, so we don’t have to write her right”.

But, hey! That’s ok! Because Pinkie Pie said later “Oops!”, menaing that she’s like an innocent girl that can’t understand the situation! Ok, No one can say that in an innocent way, no one.

I can understand that you don’t want Pinkie Pie to evolve, because you want the character in the way she is, you don’t want to destroy the essence of the character. What I don’t like is when the character is trying to learn something (Baby Cakes, A friend in Deed, Pinkie Pride) and the writers says: “Yeah, we have to do Season 5 and 6 and the movie, so let’s make her annoying”! That really annoys me.

Because of this, I think The Cutie Map was the worst double episode in the entire show. At first I was thinking about the Crystal Empire, but King Sombra at least had something interesting (although I didn’t like his words like “SLAVES” and “CRYSTAL”, I mean, nobody is a king with this dialogue) and Spike saved the entire kingdom in a great scene. I didn’t enjoy this episode for the reasons I’ve written here, and the boring design of Starlight.

About the scene, I’m not saying that Pinkie Pie has to be a perfect pony. A character with no flaws is a bad character. But the specific reasons why Pinkie Pie acted like that way makes me not to connect with her. A character fleshed out badly is a bad character.

I’m not saying that everyone is a sheep. I’ve just wanted to write something different that people really didn’t feel like this way, because I’ve never seen a comment that said “What I don’t like was…” or “I like it. However…”

Have a nice day everypony.

He’s interesting, to a degree. However, look up enough video games, anime, and general fantasy settings. Sombra has an extremely standard design when it comes to dark lords. Black, red, evil looking magic, fangs, sharp looking clothing. The whole shebang. It doesn’t mean it’s detrimental, but Sombra isn’t all that unique in it of himself.

However, Starlight has a perfect design given what she’s doing. It’s pleasant, simple, and honestly, I don’t see her as an Suri repaint. If we go that route, we might as well state that with a ton of characters. That and I’ve seen them back to back. Eh, they just don’t ‘click’ like that.

I really want to like Starlight, but that boring design bugs me. If the design was really unique (something like a cape, a coat, a mask, something like the bad guy from Star Wars VII from the teaser), I would like her more.

I actually rather enjoyed The Crystal Empire; a good but not perfect opener made the overall failure of Season 3 that much more painful to me personally.

His design certainly seemed more unique. Although that might have more to do with the whole setting. I mean those two eps introduced the backdrop that was the Crystal Empire. Between the shiny/fancy buildings, the dull looking residents, the crazy smoke monster that was Sombra, and the frozen wasteland around the city, the whole place had a lot of things contrasting off of each other.

Compare that to Starlight’s village where they tried to add as little variance between the ponies/buildings/backgrounds, and yep Starlight would look like another of the dozens of residents.

But then that fits well with the respective stories thematically. Starlight’s primary goal was to put everything on the same level. She wanted everything to feel samey. While Sombra was the usual evil dictator who contrasted sharply with his languid subjects/slaves to make the audience dislike him and feel sympathy for his kingdom’s residents.

I don’t know, the design of king Sombra is more interesting than Starlight. When I saw her for the first time, the first thing I was thinking about was Suri Polomare from season 4: Pink pony and purple hair. The only diference was the eyes (blue instead of brown) and she’s a unicorn (instead of a earth pony).

What were his powers anyway? All we saw was he could be a big black smoke monster and make crystals appear, along with giving Shining Armor crystal AIDs.

I don’t think that could really be compared to Starlight who we actually know what her powers are.

Also the Spike scene was kind of hamfisted too. I mean really, in the end it was Shining Armor’s Wife tossing abilities that saved the day. Had he fucked up all would have been lost. So Spike didn’t really save it by his lonesome or whatever. He played a roll but still.

Also all the mane 6 actually had their moments and were involved in the plot against Starlight. The mane 6 - Twilight were pretty much regulated to background ponies and did nothing to really defeat Sombra at all.

I have no idea how you can say Sombra was more interesting of a character or how that episode was even remotely as good as Cutie map. IDW’s comics are 100% not canon to the show so you can’t cite that back story for it. It was by far the worst season opener.

I’m not saying The Crystal Empire is a great/underrated episode. It was… ok in general terms. King Sombra was boring, but at least his powers were interesting. And I liked the climax, where Spike catches that crystal heart (however, too bad the Mane 6 focused more on Twilight than Spike in the very ending, so… not a good detail).
Background Pony #C8A4
A perfectly fair argument. But the part where you start defending the horrendous Crystal Empire episode is where you lost me.

@Tragiclady
Agreed. As far as ‘Pinkie doing stupid shit’ goes this was problem the tamest out of them all. Starlight was going to try and capture the mane 6 either way so her outburst literally did nothing in terms of hampering the plot.

Additionally, the mane 6 had no idea that Starlight could have taken them all on that easily with her spell, especially with Twilight on their side, so she probably wanted to confront her with that fact.

Pinkie can be very bad with communication. Her mind works in unusual ways and she has trouble adopting somepony else’s viewpoint. Applejack has the same flaw, actually. They both end up pushy and insensitive at their worst.
Evowizard25

@Tragiclady
Well, really, I’d say Applejack should have asked questions but just assumed that ‘everybody’ did the holiday exactly the same, which isn’t good on her part. While Pinkie didn’t explain, I think Applejack should have assumed something would be ‘off’ with their way of life compared to hers.
Evowizard25

Starlight pretty much already knew, so it wouldn’t have changed anything. She was going to take their cutie marks away, so it was inevitable. Pinkie Pie’s outburst wasn’t stupid per se, just something done without much forethought. I’ll admit, I’ve done that on occasion and I’d like to think I’m not an idiot.

Also, no. I disagree. A lot. Pinkie Pie is one of my top favorite characters and I’ve seen a lot of growth for her over the seasons. {Also, Starlight Glimmer is one of the most interesting mlp villains to date. Best premier ever.}

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

Have you seen the episode “The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone”? The part where Rainbow Dash is climbing down a cliff and asks Pinkie to throw her the rope, and Pinkie literally throws the rope down without attaching it to anything first, and RD could have died down there? Yeah that was something.
In a less life threatening but more recent episode, Pinkie Pie invites Applejack’s family to spend the holidays at the rock farm, without explaining any of the Pie family traditions, and wonders why the two families have such a huge falling out for a while. Applejack was being dumb too by trying to force her traditions over theirs. Even so, some explanation by Pinkie Pie would have helped a lot in that case.
Pinkie Pie is energetic and friendly, but doesn’t always take the time to think things through or explain stuff before implementing a plan

I think another flaw of Pinkie Pie’s is that if she likes something or thinks it’s a good idea, she believes that everyone else agrees with her or shares her opinions.

Like in “Filli Vanilli”, she assumed that because Fluttershy was a good singer, that she would want to sing.

Wow man.
I disagree so much it’s not even funny.
Pinkie has shown growth in the later seasons, and a lot of it. One example would be Pinkie Apple Pie, where she shows clear understanding of family and resolves a conflict between the apples. Sure, you can think her main characteristic is being annoying, but saying the writers wanted that to be the defining thing for her is silly.

As for the episode… That’s not a dumb move, that’s confronting a villanous character with their actions. The mane 6 were trying to resolve the situation and Pinkie wanted to help in her way. Nobody could have foreseen that Starlight would overpower the 6 of them, especially considering Twilight was among them. Not to mention, eventually the mane 6 would have had to confront Starlight anyway, Pinkie just sped up the process.
