That Beretta is probably a bad example. The manual to my Stevens 5100 side-by-side illustrates 57 parts.

Overall parts including screws and pins aren’t really an indicator of complexity in a meaningful capacity anyway. My 5100 disassembles into 3 parts; lock/stock, barrel, and forend. Unless something breaks inside the lockbox, which is very unusual, you should never have to disassemble it further than that.

I will agree that pump-actions are not as complex as some people think.

Beretta

There’s your problem, The Italians love overcomplicating things.

Plus, that’s a modern double barrel with all the unnecessary safety switches and single trigger/dual striker internals.
Take a traditional double barrel and you can have about 20 internal parts.

As a matter of fact, some pump actions are simpler than a double barrel.
For example, the Ithaca 37.

72 parts, compared to the 100+ of a Beretta over-and-under.

It’s not that big of a pain if it doesn’t have a safety that automatically engages on opening the shotgun. I brought mine to a gunsmith to have that reconfigured.

They look the right length for blanks.

I’ve heard of hunters “back in the day” using blank shotgun shells to propel steel darts from a shotgun.

Or for driving really big nails into trees.
