Not to get too pedantic, but diamond literally means “unbreakable,” from Greek ἀδάμας.
 
On the other hoof, diamonds can burn – they oxidize in air if heated over 700 °C. :)

Nooooo, hardness determines whether or not something can be CUT. Diamond TOUGHNESS, which determines fracture, is significantly less impressive. So while I cannot cut you with a knife, I can most definitely BREAK you with my words…or a hammer.
