I wonder if that sort of thing could be assembled from panels or events at conventions; lots of staff and actors go to lots of cons, and if they could be convinced to sit down and record commentary for their major episodes while they’re already at the con, that seems like it would shortcut a lot of the logistical problems involved in getting them together for commentary tracks.
Btw, building on your idea of a series “omnibus” DVD: perhaps such a thing could also have audio commentaries for various episodes throughout each season. Seriously, to this day I’m still disappointed that only the season 1 set had any audio commentaries.
Can’t afford plane tickets to Kentucky?
Ouch, no, no, no, heck no.
Hearing 20 seconds of hoedown banjo jug band music is like getting a brief whiff of a perfectly-cooked steak that someone else is eating: a cruel tease of a pleasure that you’ll never get to fully experience.
DJ P0N-3 slammin’ at the turntables, glowsticks and flashing lights, fog machines, camera shaking to the beat– and it’s playing hoedown banjo jug band music.
Oh, sorry, missed that.
Or, Vinyl opens her mouth to say something, and then it cuts to the credits.
It was just a joke I made building off of TUA’s idea of adding extra little funny scenes to the ends of episodes as some kind of special DVD thing.
Are you sure? I don’t remember that, and can’t find it in the transcript.
And I must say, Jim does really well at handling this kind of thing. Apparently, he’s only ever had to block someone on Twitter once, and that wasn’t even about anything related to the show; some homophobic asshole claiming to be a Christian was harassing Jim over how “horrible” homosexuality was and bla bla bla fire and brimstone. Jim later even said that he HATED having to block the guy despite how hateful that guy was.
Also, at the end of Slice of Life, Dr. Whooves asks Derpy, “You know, I can’t remember your name.” Derpy replies, “It’s Der-” [cut to black screen]
Blu-Ray discs can hold a lot more data than DVD discs, so in theory Blu-Ray versions of movies can be in higher resolution and with more (and fancier) special features. In practice the difference isn’t always discernible. And I was speaking of MLP:FiM Blu-Rays specifically, when saying retailers had no interest; they’re happy to stock a dozen copies of the latest direct-to-video acting debut of yet another WWE star, because they expect adult will drop the extra coin to enjoy that spectacle in the best possible format, whereas little girls would be satisfied with a VHS tape if anyone still stocked those antiquities.
lack of retailer interest in stocking them
There’s a gigantic tub of Blu-Ray movies smack in the middle of the frozen food section at my regular grocery store between the lasagna/casserole section and the fruit bar/popsicle section, so probably somebody’s buyin’ the things.
I barely have electricity at my charmingly rustic ranchhouse and record my teleovision broadcasts on wax cylinders or something, so I have no idea– what makes Blu-Ray worth the extra money compared to DVD?
Except that I’m OK with occasional playfulness in MLP (see “Slice of Life”, but let’s not repeat that for another 100-150 episodes, plzkthx), I agree with this 100%.
@TexasUberAlles
Or they could delay the start of the season so the finale airs close to the time of the movie’s release. Not that I think that’ll happen, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
@Background Pony #D993
The reason for lack of Blu-Rays is the lack of retailer interest in stocking them, pure and simple.
I strongly suspect that Shout! does actually care (at least a little) about the show, but regardless there’s not a whole lot they can do in this situation.
If you haven’t made any comics or written any fanfiction you really should consider doing so. All of those ideas were nothing short of comedic genius.
As for the idea itself it’s definitely possible. I read that DHX was paid $6 million CAD (about $8 million US) for producing the first three seasons. Taking that into account and assuming that the show ends at around the 200 episode mark that it would likely only cost about $250,000 US at the very most to tack on a small short scene that is less than a minute long at the end of every episode. And if ole Hasbro is too much of a tightwad to cough up the cash, the fandom can crowdfund it.
I’d buy it.
It would be so freakin’ awesome if there was some kind of DVD omnibus collection once the series has run its course where DHX goes back and adds an eight or ten second clip at the end of every episode after the credits like Gravity Falls does. Like, after Twilight’s Kingdom Pt. 2, it’s an eight second shot of the smoking ruins of the Library, then the bees’ nest falls down out of the sky and is caught by one of the remaining branch stubs and there’s a brief buzzing sound before [cut to black screen]. After Mysterious Mare Do Well, there’s Cherry Berry seeing the Big Reveal scene in the alleyway from her second storey window and muttering “Now I can get revenge for almost letting me plummet to my doom!” and aiming a flowerpot at Dash’s head, then it cuts to the shot from the episode of Pinkie moving them out of the way and CB leaning out to say, “…Sorry!”. After A Canterlot Wedding Pt. 2, there’s a shot of a desert straight out of a Roadrunner/Coyote cartoon, with a beaded lizard walking lazily across the screen for several seconds, then the sound of “aaaaa aaaaa AAAAA AAAAA AAAAA– OOF!” as Chrysalis lands in a cloud of dust, followed a few seconds later by dozens of Changelings one after another as she opens one bleary eye and says “…Son of a-
” [cut to black screen]. After Castle Mane-ia, it’s just ten seconds of The Pony Of Shadows sweeping the floor with a push broom and whistling tunelessly. After Twilight Time, it’s Spike sitting behind the Library reading comic books and casually eating nachos out of the trash can. After Sonic Rainboom, it’s Spitfire, Soarin’, and Misty Fly walking into Wonderbolts HQ with grim looks and hanging heads, and when another Wonderbolt starts to say, “So, how was the compet-” they interrupt with “WE DON’T WANNA TALK ABOUT IT.” in unison and keep walking.If were talking about the idea made into a short than yes.
If we are talking about the original joke idea than only to bronies that watched Andy Worhol’s Empire in its entirely and liked it.
People would call it the best thing to happen sine Fallout Equestria became canon.
If they did that than it would go down in history as one of the worst DVD’s ever released with countless fans returning their copies for a refund; and due to Shout! expecting the best case scenario and mass producing millions that would wind up collecting dust in wholesale warehouses, they would eventually go under but not before ordering their unsold and returned copies to be buried (along with unsold copies of their other licensed shows/movies that turned out to be flops) in a remote landfill in the Southwestern US that would be excavated less than 30 years latter. This in turn would cause the great crash of the direct-to-DVD industry which would end 2 years latter with the rise of a company that would dominant the industry for a good decade give or take a few years.
But to be honest, seeing Rainbow Dash being forced to do community service for destroying the weather factory would have made an excellent post-credits scene.
Hey, a man can dream xP
Shout Factory makes the DVDs, and they only care about FiM a tad more than Discovery Family does, so don’t expect any fancy DVD features any time soon. And forget about Blu-Ray’s of the show, that will never happen as long as Hasbro wants them to keep pumping out 5 episode “theme” disks.
