They’re good at every friendship diplomacy, usually…  
just not complicated political-style diplomacy.  
Which they were struggling to cope with here.

I mean, yes, if they weren’t adults at the start of the show (which I doubt), they’re definitely adults now, though exactly how old they are remains ambiguous. Then again, that doesn’t really matter.
 
Twilight’s the only one who’s really had this kind of leadership experience by this point, and even for all the friendship stuff they’ve learned, not one of them has past experience with freaking diplomacy. Hence why they panicked so much in this episode. I like to exaggerate it a bit just because I enjoy the idea, but it’s still there to some extent. The six did make it work, though.

The Mane Six are all adults, and in all honesty they have a lot more experience the majority of the citizens of Equestria.
 
Save perhaps the Celestia and Luna, as well Cadence and Shining Armour, these six mare are very qualified based on their experiences along.
