@IrieMangaStudios Yeah, I didn’t mean to imply that his face made the scene any less powerful (if anything, it made it more so, at least to me). That’s one thing I like about Oda’s art style; the facial expressions might be extreme, but so are the emotions they convey. People don’t actually cry single tears like in the movies, they make weird faces and funny noises under red eyes and noses.

EvilTon, I heard criticism on that pic and although I think Oda could have drawn it a little better, I got the breakdown of Luffy’s spirit here:

seperate from his crew and couldn’t stop it from happening
broken into the world’s toughest prison, poisoned and physically pushed to the limits, and broke out
fought along with Whitebeard’s crew against the Navy’s best
just as he is reunited with his brother, Ace, and about to escape, Ace gets kills defending Luffy.

Keeping in mind that he was still 16 years old, powers of a rubber man and just lost someone close to him. Mental breakdown. Just like Elongated Man when he lost his wife in Identity Crisis:

Personal loss + stretchy powers = really tough to keep it together.
