There is another possibility as to what caused the Ashlands timeline that I have yet to see brought up:
 
Remember when Cerberus escaped Tartarus? The Cerberus who keeps all the ancient evil monsters from escaping? It was Twilight who led him back there in It’s About Time. She wasn’t around to do that due to Starlight’s interference, so its quite possible that the Ashlands timeline was caused by all the inmates of Tartarus. Basically the apocalypse happened.
 
Celestia and many others would have fought back against the escaped monsters, perhaps even won and banished them back to Tartarus, but by then the damage was too great, and all life in Equestria died out, at least in the area we saw.

Oh come on, there’s no way those guys can destory Equestria. Unless all of the princesses are dead because of Chrysalis, Sombra, Nightmare Moon and Tirek’s event’s (alongside most of fight-capaible ponies), there’s no way they can destory it.
