If it’s done well, it might inpire he show to pick up that concept, which I would love, because Spike shines bst when he’s a supportive assistant/family to Twilight.

I assume it’s just “I wanna help the baby, mom!” and the parent appeases them by watching them try to feed their younger sibling or some shit. I’d bet that Twilight Velvet or Night Light are the ones that really take care of him.
Background Pony #0BF3
I can’t be the only one who thinks Twilight being Spike’s mom is fucking stupid.
she’s only five years older than him, and she knows nothing about raising a baby.
and not one adult, not even the princess herself said. hang on a minute, maybe it is a bit irresponsible to let the small filly look after the creature that could accidently burn her face off.
maybe somepony who is actually a fucking adult should take care of him.

and when I see this kind of shit in the mlp comics, it fucking pisses me off.
MasterSpike

Ultimately, Lauren Faust says it was Celestia that did it, but since certain elements from the comics are too different from the show’s canon, I’ll simply say that Celestia raised Spike in the show, but he was raised along Twilight in the comics.

“Call Of The Cutie that she was the last one in her class to get her mark”
^ This doesn’t mean anything unless there’s an age mark where cutie marks are triggered regardless of personal journeys. Nothing suggests the CMCs are older than the rest of their class. Apple Bloom’s conversation with AJ in Call of the Cutie suggests the process just triggered later for their family.

“the lack of “kindergarten” as a qualifier”
^ Are you thinking Applebloom just started school in the current timeline? I don’t think AJ and Apple Bloom were the same age though. Why mention it if the difference were say as small as three weeks? How would AJ even remember such a little difference between her filly timeline and the current day with Applebloom on the fly? Seems like age is mentioned when there’s a sizable enough difference, like when Fluttershy brought it up to Pinkie.

“It seemed pretty clear to me that they had stayed in touch for a while after leaving camp and going their separate ways”
^ Applejack said her and Coloratura wrote to each other for “a bit” and “then lost touch”. This implies to me a shorter time frame, like say no more than a year. If you think about it this makes sense given what else we can gather: Applejack and Coloratura didn’t know each other in the near present with how little they knew about each other (ex: AJ not knowing about Rara’s work or Coloratura even surprised to run into Applejack in Ponyvile); AJ’s physical recollection of Coloratura is the Rara from camp–something that would have changed if the two corresponded for years (sending photos, one coming to visit the other); also both their memories of each other when asked were cemented around their camp experience. This too would have changed over the years. Not so if they only knew each other for a much shorter time.

“YMMV”
^ ?

“the Apple Parents both died before their children were old enough”
^ I think that’s what they are implying. I hope the show covers the Apple sibling’s past more.

“and Granny Smith moved in”
The farm is her place though. She moved there with her parents and the family reunion photos show she’s been there throughout the years. Unless she was at a retiring home we haven’t seen–which begs the question why she was given responsibility of young fillies if she needed to go there–there’s nothing to suggest she stayed else where.

“So I don’t see any reason to challenge the idea that AJ is just as much in charge legally as she is functionally”.
^ But she’s not. Too many key decisions have been out of her hands and events taking place on the farm have fallen to Granny’s hooves, giving AJ the freedom to compete or just walk around and enjoy herself. There isn’t anything pointing to her having legal ownership. Like Twilight being the librarian but not owning the library. In fact the recent episode has Granny Smith’s face being trademark to represent Sweet Apple Acres, not AJ’s. Note too that Applejack hasn’t been the one shown spending the money–for the farm or not–and when she did want to give money away she had to earn it from an outside source.
I’m not saying AJ’s role hasn’t changed throughout the show, it has, but for now her role is more in line of Lime Stone Pie: organizing the farm in a Twilight fashion but parents still owning and having the final word.

Even if you first assume that Applejack is younger than Rarity, there’s a limit to how much younger she could be, since she explicitly said in Call Of The Cutie that she was the last one in her class to get her mark, and both the lack of “kindergarten” as a qualifier and the tone of that exchange with Apple Bloom imply that she was at roughly the same age/grade as AB at the time.

Applebloom IS alive during that time frame
I don’t think she was, though; Coloratura specifically said that she had found out about AB in a letter from AJ, and you don’t generally write letters to people sitting at the other end of the stage. full It seemed pretty clear to me that they had stayed in touch for a while after leaving camp and going their separate ways, and there’s no way to pin down how long the interim between Summer Camp and Sister Correspondence might have been; it also came across more like a birth announcement than a status update, and “best little sister ever” in that context isn’t really dependent on any apparent personality of the young’un so much as the pride of the newly-minted Big Sister.

Applejack doesn’t own Sweet Apple Acres yet like Rarity owns her shop
YMMV, but their situation strikes me as being exactly what it goes to great lengths to pointedly avoid saying on the tin: the Apple Parents both died before their children were old enough to take legal ownership of The Farm, and Granny Smith moved in as Apple-Regent until Big Macintosh (as the eldest)– or maybe AJ anyway, there’s the distinct possibility that inheritence is matrilineal in Equestria– reached age of majority. In Call Of The Cutie AJ says, “I knew my future was to run Sweet Apple Acres”, and when Pinkie got her Butt Destiny switched with AJ’s, Granny and Mac were conspicuously absent, so I don’t see any reason to challenge the idea that AJ is just as much in charge legally as she is functionally. Granny running things like the family reunions and Zap Apple Season seems to me more a combination of Tradition and practical recognition of the value of (possibly centuries of) experience than her having formal ownership of the land and/or farm.

@TexasUberAlles
Hey that’s a pretty interesting theory. I’d like to add to it a little.

I believe Applejack is a lot younger than expected–or at least much younger than Rarity: By the recent episode, The Mane Attraction, the brief time Applejack knew Rara was just shortly after she got her cutie mark. Applebloom IS alive during that time frame and AJ is writing to Rara, telling her what type of sister she is. If AJ is doing this, than Applebloom has developed enough to be showing off her own distinct personality.

Assuming the CMCs are around the same age–being classed together for schooling–Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom can be used as a stick against their sisters. In Whom The Sweetie Belle Toils we see Sweetie Belle a lot younger(turning five years old). Yet Rarity is an adult during the flash back–or old enough to be her full height. Applejack is a filly when Applebloom is around, and one younger than the CMCs. Even if you were to assume Applebloom to be one or two then, a few years difference isn’t enough to cover the distance between AJ and Rarity’s body sizes. Five years didn’t affect Sweetie Belle that way.

Adding more to this, Applejack doesn’t own Sweet Apple Acres yet like Rarity owns her shop. Granny Smith is still in charge of the larger stuff: Zap Apple Jam, the Sisterhoove Social, the Nightmare Night maze, making deals betting the farm. And Applejack is free to unexpectedly leave and go work on a cherry farm without the farm falling apart. She doesn’t live on her own like Fluttershy, Rarity, or Rainbow Dash. The series shows Applejack taking more responsibility as time goes on, but more of one in the earlier stages than Rarity (owner) or Dash (ordering the weather ponies). Some examples are her taking the mantle of Big Mac (ep. 4), allowed to organize a family gathering for the first time(S3. ep.8) or fighting/debating over leading a road trip with Big Mac and Granny(S4 ep9). Applejack is more in line with Pinkie(apprentice) than anyone one else in the mane 6 and strikes me as quite young in comparison.

@MasterSpike
From the MLP Wiki:
Lauren Faust, the show’s developer, had suggested that after the entrance exam, it was Princess Celestia who raised and trained Spike before he ended up as Twilight Sparkle’s assistant later in life, where Princess Celestia believed they did belong together since it was Twilight Sparkle who hatched him. Faust further suggests that the egg-hatching test was arranged for Twilight Sparkle by Princess Celestia because she sensed her connection to the Elements of Harmony, but adds that the show’s current crew may treat the story differently.
