Since there is no universally established length of time (from the day a movie hits the silver screen to its incubation period inside a warm and snuggly Redbox), it’s up to each individual to decide what is or isn’t a spoiler to give or receive. One need only take a ride on public transportation during rush hour to verify that people aren’t known for making the best decisions when it comes to respecting the needs of their fellow humans. The bottom line is that people L*O*V*E to talk and we have to either learn to take the good with the bad or go live under a rock. I’ve had some shows/movies spoiled for me and it made me lose interest in watching the product to the point that I gave it a pass so I take the good with the bad and I live under a rock (I don’t own a television that receives any network or cable programming) so I’ve got that going for me.

Imo if you had two months to watch it but didn’t, at least don’t bitch about spoilers. Spoiling brand new movies is assholish, talking about what was in a movie that’s not even in cinemas anymore is not. At that point, not having seen a movie is your decision.

But the first time you read a book or watch an epic movie is the most magical time for a reason. At least it was for me.

Not just you. Before Tron: Legacy came out, I went to the boards and asked if Rinzler was good or evil. That was all I wanted spoiled. Instead, the bastards told me exactly who he was. It wasn’t a stupendous movie, but that bit was ruined. Lately, I’ve encountered idiots under The Force Awakens articles who don’t think spoilers are a big deal for any movie older than two months.

Yeah I’m not saying that. But the first time you read a book or watch an epic movie is the most magical time for a reason. At least it was for me. I didn’t get much of anything spoiled. Everything was exactly as it was intended to happen. Every twist took me by surprise. The genocide path was spoiled since I had to look up how to play it but that’s kinda by design - which is sorta bad design even if intentional.

I believe the problem is that there are some people who played Undertale the same way they’d play any other kind of game, not realizing just what kind of game Undertale is, and found themselves in a situation because of their action (which is kind of the point of the game), while there are others who just want to play the game a certain way. Because of this, most people have trouble trying to explain what Undertale is to a new person, and just try to push a certain path to take, “or else it is forever lost”.

For anyone playing Undertale for the first time, they should play it however way they want. But they shouldn’t be surprised by how the game reacts to them, should they choose a path.

While I do feel like if you never get to the true pacifist ending you’re missing a significant chunk of the experience, those people can go fuck themselves. Play it through more than once however you want. (I didn’t, and now never will, because I can’t reset. I’d feel too guilty.)

To me it seems like a lot of people who have played undertale think that if you want to play it your own way and not what they deem “the only true way to play” there’s no point in playing. Being told that too often is exactly what deterred me from playing it.

And while I agree with that, some people seem to act like if you have anything spoiled about it there’s no point in playing.

Oh, sorry, I know that Rosebud was his sled, no point in watching Citizen Kaine now.

I was glad I played before the Undertale hype started. The fandom is pretty heavy on spoiling the game. It’s a game that loses a lot of its power if you know what’s coming.

Well yeah, but that’s all I want it to be; sort of fall back down to reasonable heights rather than having someone go into a fighting game Twitch-streamer and say “YOU SHOULD PLAY UNDERTALE! WHAT? NO!? DON’T YOU LIKE EARTHBOUND!?”

… I’ve… erm… had some… experiences.

The hype is not going to go under “Modern Brony Fandom” levels though. It have a very established fanbase that isn’t likely to stop miming anytime soon, but it will stabilize and stop being literally everywhere though. Like Bronies.

I’d say you’re not missing much, but you kind of are. It’s probably the most darkhorse indie video game of the year with a surprisingly strong and funny story that takes shots at all the RPG tropes in existence.
