My headcanon is that the Tantabus has been loose for the past 1000 years, and kept all the other nightmares at bay by basically being a highly territorial apex predator: sure whichever one pony was visited by the Tantabus would have the nightmare to end all nightmares, but no other nightmares would dare tread on the Tantabus’s hunting grounds so everyone else slept well. Now that the Tantabus’s “job” of being an evil nightmare is finished, and Luna has retired, it’s once again just prowling and hunting other nightmares and occasionally breeding with others. By the time of G5, they are an entire race :D

Are you saying the Tantabus could enter dreams and take care of bad dreams? Is she friendly like Luna, or Evil like Nightmare Moon?

Yep. Keep in mind, this was back before the Tantabus pulled a Majin Buu and basically created its own race, so Luna’s enraged anything would breed with it XD

(Which is my headcanon for why Luna could retire: the Tantabus’ offspring fight nightmares now)

Maybe Tanti was just creating threats so it could save the ponies from them and then ”Ooh my hero time to have sex”, but Luna foiled it each and every time. Luna’s like “It doesn’t work that way!” and Tanti’s like “It does in your daydreams!” :P

I feel like it might it be it snapped when it can’t take this anymore.  
Imagine if your “mother” made you torment her her pretty much? Most likely the Tantabus believed its Celestia’s and Mane 6’s fault this happened, most likely it would have gone after them if it broke out into the real world.  
Believing it is THEY who must be punished, not Luna. Wished the show could have touched on this stuff.
