I know it seems weird posting this after 4 years, but it reminds me of a line from G3:
“A princess (Well, Prince in this case) can have friends, just no equals.”

Shining Armor is probably the first time Blueblood has had an equal. Socially and political the princesses are above him and everyone else below. Making a friend is much easier when you stand on equal ground.

In a sense. Growing up in a place where ponies fall in one of two categories, namely
A) Royalty
B) Servants (including guards)
probably leads to something like it, yeah. So, him treating Rarity like a maid rather than a date would make sense to him. She’s clearly not a princess, right?

Also, it’s a little funny if one keeps in mind that it’s the same mare who did this:

It’s also possible Blueblood’s used to dealing with other royalty and servants. He knows how to approach them, he knows where they stand and he knows they know where he stands. Everypony’s reasonable comfortable with the arrangement.

It’s dealing with commoners that’s problematic. So he usually doesn’t. When he tries, well… angry mares and cake on his coat.

I guess. An example would be Prince/King Wu from Legend of Korra - while not necessarily a genius, he’s insufferable in casual situations, but knows what he’s doing and when to take a situation seriously.

I see it as more-like being a spoiled brat that earned it. Where a spoiled brat is just given everything they want without even trying, a spoiled brat that earned it is someone who gets whatever they want, but either worked hard to get to that stage, or just has the skills to still be useful so no one can really complain.

I’ve always felt that, as somepony raised a prince, it’s only natural he has skills at leading other ponies, be they soldiers or workers, and as a diplomat.

Being rude to somepony at a party doesn’t mean you’re incompetent :P (besides, Rarara was totes shallow in that ep)

The hate Blueblood gets has always been overblown it’s a breathe of fresh air to see this he’s still uppity but he’s also likeable and useful and that’s great.
