It’s a pretty common method for drawing ponies, actually! A circle to represent the head, and then a center dividing line to figure out where the middle of the face is. It helps place facial features, like the mane. It’s interesting!

Ah, I see. The middle line represents where the middle of the head is, and we can see Spike’s spines follow that line pretty closely. If Spike’s spines followed the curve of his head instead of the middle line, β€œoff-center Spikes” illustrate how strange that would look.

It’s been said that Starlight’s mane is off-center and looks weird, and I believe this helps illustrate that it should be coming from the middle, dividing line of her face, not the curve of her head.

I don’t get the dumb oc tag, but I get the picture.

Starlight’s mane looks wrong. I mean, it looks like instead of starting in the center like other ponies like Rarity, the mane has somehow decided to start on her left side, making it look off compared to other manes. It even looks like a wig.
