Indeed. He also might be referring to how his Patreon account’s funding has been going down. I mean, over the past few comic pages it went from %$400 to %$330. With a drop like that, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to slow production a bit.

I’m pretty sure Cupcakes is only famous because it was such a shocker made when the fandom was very small.
 
It’s like casting shadow puppets. You influence the light beam while it’s very small, and your hand is less than a foot across, but the shadow it casts can fill a mountain side.
 
When whoever wrote Cupcakes, the beam, the fandom, was small. Now he’s cast a huge shadow because the beam has grown tremendously. If he wrote the same thing again, now, instead of back then, nobody would ever know.
 
A lot of fandom famous things are like that.
 
It really makes me think of inflationary cosmological models of the expanding universe, since the analogy is near perfect. However, I don’t think that would help most people understand the fandom any better XP

If he is, I’m going to do everything in my power to make everyone love her even more and rub it in his face as the biggest middle finger in history. So help me God, I will make sure that Time of No Return is taken as seriously as fucking Cupcakes.

I still wonder if the author of the comic is trying to poison the image of Twilight Sparkle for the rest of the Mane 6 and the audience.

I hate to sound shallow, but I like the art style too much to just quit. He sounds like he’s considering making it paid, though. That’d be kinda a terrible thing to do partway through! It’s not that good, not unless things get really interesting really fast.
