I’m gonna say that they are Canon. The show doesn’t take any consideration of the comics whatsoever and can retcon certain events (Moondancers appearance for one), but regardless is still a level of canon. It isn’t a matter of is or isn’t. There are different…grades…of canon.  
The show is A, the comics and Equestria Girls B, the novels and special books (Journal of the Two Sisters) are C and the toy descriptions and such are D.  
Remember, according to HASBRO, all MLP products of Gen 4 is canon, as long as it was official, even if it contradicts itself.

Starlight might be qualified to become an alicorn, but not Trixie or Moondancer. I like both, but neither seem to be princess worthy.
 
Also, why not a male alicorn? A prince. It might not happen, but I can always pretend one exists.
