Teenage Spike gives me a sort of Eren Jaeger vibe. Intelligent, loyal, passionate, but flies into a rage at the flip of a switch.

it’s not about spike wanting to protect her/fighting garble, its bout ember just looking on in dismay like she can’t do anything about it.
 
She’s the damned dragon lord! She could stop that in an instant if she wanted to.

this is the third time i’ve seen this happening, people complaining about ember not beeing capable of defeating garble. look, i’m pretty sure that the artist know how capable she is, but all i see here is that garble wants to beat spike, not ember. and what? spike protecting her and himself is wrong now? is it male chauvinist? or is it all people wanting to prove that spike is useless? if he was, im pretty sure ember wouldn’t become the dragon lord

I kinda wonder if they will ever talk about those things, even in the movie, honestly. But again: if they won’t come out and say that Scootaloo was born with crippled wings I doubt they would say that Spike had a birth defect.
 
I’m at a loss of how to do the suddenly-wings-appear option, maybe Celestia’s Magical Ethereal Youtube Channel also works for dragons?

They didn’t do much with Scootaloo at all. Six seasons, and we’ve yet to see any of her family. At least we know she’s not homeless, but apart from that? Plus, I think Flight to the Finish wasn’t a bad episode.
 
Fluttershy has a similar problem, but we’ll get to see her brother soon, so there’s that.

My Headcanon is similar to this but a little simpler, and it ties into “how the heck did Tia obtain a dragon egg to start with” – dragons are a pretty belligerent species. Dragons are intelligent, and it’s not hard (at least on earth) to actually see WHAT’S developing in an egg; look up “candling chicken eggs”. In My Headcanon, dragons simply cull eggs they find with birth defects. Spike didn’t have lil vestigial wings in his egg; whether legitimately a birth defect or just “a terrestrial dragon was in the lineage but these winged dragons still considered the lack of wings to be unacceptable,” Out Of The Nest That Egg Goes, and Celestia and her entourage find an abandoned dragon egg on an outing. Noting the scarcity of such a thing, they keep it.
 
The odds of that being the actual explanation are…. astronomically low, but it satisfies my “why the heck did tia just HAVE a dragon egg” itch and my “Spike just does not have wings” itch.

Incidentally, maybe it could make for a nice short story. Spike is feeling frustrated and angry he won’t grow wings, he kinda blames Twilight but feels guilty for it, he feels like he’s not a real dragon if he can’t ever fly, and then Ember tells him what an awesome guy he is and how he shouldn’t let the wing thing get to him too much.

Mine is that he won’t grow any because of the circumstances under which he was hatched.
 
One the one hand, it’s a tough break, to be sure. On the other, without Twilight’s magic breathing life into his egg, he wouldn’t be around at all. It led to a special bond they share, even if Twilight wasn’t always very appreciative of his efforts back when she was a shut-in.
 
So, maybe he doesn’t have wings and will never grow any, but he’s got a heart big enough to touch even that of another dragon like Ember.
