All I can say is…something kind of similar to this happens in the Zero Escape series. Play it for weird as hell time travel shenanigans.

Here is an idea I actually may try to work out in a fanfic: Some years in the future, filly Sunset stumbles upon a magic spell her dad was studying regarding time travel. A spell he found by accident after in an old library. Reading it and thinking it is kind of harmless, she tries to see if she can do it, only for the spell to backfire. Sunset is thrown many years into the past, to the time before Twilgiht became Celestia’s student and as a result of a head injury she suffers then loses her memories. She spends months in an orphanage as no one knows where she came from, till rumors of her raw magic talent reaches celestia who decides to take the filly in as her personal student and “daughter”. Then the events of the show continuity play out as always. Backbone of the stor I would now have in mind is, that when Sunset decides during summer break in the human world to travel back to Equestria to finally make peace with Celestia, she end sup also meeting Starlight, in doing so having flashbacks of her past.

Sunburst: …Oh shit, you do.

Meanwhile Twilight is just standing in the back, mouth agape.

So the whole SA+PC=SG thing can about when “The One Where Pinkie Knows” came out and said Cadence was pregnant as well as learning the season finale was going to be about time travel. Many fans put those two together and thought that if Glimmer was their child then time travel would explain how she got there. And saw the color scheme of Glimmer working out to be plausible between Shining and Cadence, I mean Flurry Heart is a few shades off from Glimmer as is. Also having Glimmer be Twilight’s niece adds a dramatic twist to her as well as potentially explain why Glimmer was dead set on equality, being born a princess and having a high born status forced upon her, making her an outsider to most ponies and not allowing her to make friends.

Even when we first met the characters, though - as soon as Starlight appeared - it should’ve been apparent that she’s too old to be the offspring of Cadence and Armor :q

How was that a theory in the first place? I mean, what was the reasoning behind it? I think the timeframes are way too different.

That… actually works. And makes up for how the theory about Starlight being Cadance and Shining Armor’s daughter didn’t play out.
