Most of us have dealt with bullies. It’s an understandable ‘evil’ we can grapple with.
 
How the heck do you understand someone who brutalized and killed hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of people like they were stepping on ants?

You can learn as much from talking to anyone who works in prison ministry. I did once. Just the things he felt he could share were nauseating enough before you consider that they were done, as one criminal said, ‘because I couldn’t think of a reason why not’.

Well, a lot more than those two guys. A LOT more. A guy named Mao T’se-Tung ran up a bigger body count than both of them put together. In the 70s a dictator named Pol Pot took over a country called Cambodia and killed off a third of the population. In the 70s there was a dictator in an African country called Uganda. His name was Idi Amin. If I tried to describe some of the things he did, you wouldn’t believe me.
 
Humanity does from time to time produce monsters, monsters so vile that their actions represent a mockery of all our aspirations and dreams. Yet somehow civilization survives.

Hell, we’ve had two guys in the last 70 years who pretty much demonstrated that the ‘no bad people, no bad actions, just misunderstandings and misunderstood people trying to do the right thing’ rule is wrong…
 
…and those two were rulers of Germany & Russia, respectively…

I agree. The very best villains are the ones who have the courage of their convictions.
 
There is a school of thought that says there are no bad people, no bad actions, just misunderstandings and misunderstood people trying to do the right thing, and everything would be solved if everyone just sat down and talked. History demonstrates this to be implausible at best.
 
I suppose, though, when we’re talking about this show, we have to remember the primary audience, and maybe they aren’t ready to hear an antagonist say “Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven! Evil, be thou my good!”

My (possibly a bit too cynical) take on it is that it’s not all forgive and forget, and Twilight has ulterior motives for taking Starlight in. It keeps her where Twilight can watch her, and some emotional support might decrease the chances of her becoming dangerous again. Plus she’s got a lot of magical power and she’s done things that should have been flat-out impossible, which could be quite useful to the mane six if they manage to win her over.

That’s always been a major pet peeve of mine, too, when double standards are applied to the magnitude of villain sins. “Easily forgiven” is in play here, and that’s despite the fact that Discord absolutely did betray them at the earliest possible opportunity–and only stopped because it screwed him over, too. If I were them, yeah, I’d be a lot slower to forgive.
 
Reminds me of this book I recently finished reading–the villainess who raised her kid to be the fleshly vessel for a demon god, uses human shields and performs hideous transformations and sacrifices? Aww, she said she was sorry and she really loved her son at the end, so it’s alright! But the one who just wanted to put her own son on the throne and raised an ordinary rebellion? Pure evil, she must die and be forgotten!

Sad thing is starlight and discord get reformed all is forgiven by a majority of the fanbase but when diamond tiara was reformed (which is in my eyes far more believable than discord’s and starlight’s reformations combined) the majority of the fanbase still portrays her as a bitch despite her actions not being anywhere near as atrocious as the actions starlight and discord did.

Ok, I was trying to give the writers the benefit of the doubt, but if it’s all on them… Aorry but they acrewed up badly with The Cutie Remark.
 
As for Discord… meh, never was a fan of Return of Harmony, so his reformation felt like “Ok, maybe clunky but I see it working… a la Beauty & the Beast minus the shipping”.
 
As for Starlight, I don’t hate the character anymore. I love Evil selfish Glimmer, and try to like Reformed “Glimglam” as they call her, but Cutie Remark made her SO unlikeable and so despicable that I just can’t. Although I blame it entirely on how the episode played her out and how her redemption was reduced to the last 10 minutes whereas Discord took an entire episode.
