They were gravitational waves detected thousands of megaparsecs away. The first event was caused by the merger of binary blackholes, releasing in a split second the mass-energy equivalence of three solar masses in a ripple of spacetime. The detection itself required us to be able to detect a change in spacetime smaller than a nucleon. And this required a laser interferometer with a beam kilometers long. Two separate facilities to confirm it, in fact.
 
In short, this is as amazing an achievement as the first telescope. It’s a new way to do astronomy, and it’ll only get better in time.

News says these things are colliding,
