I’ll root for Starlight. I like her. Sunset is just really overrated in my opinion.

Yeah but sunset left when she was older. We don’t really know how many years of training shd had under her belt before she went her own way.

If Twilight could self levitate what are the chances that sunset can do the same?
Pretty high I reckon conidering they had the same mentor and were both Pretty evenly matched as unicorns.

Hmm let’s see, since I love vs. discussions and happen to be very interested in the Sunset vs. Starlight match-up.

Since most discussions of this nature are by feats, let’s see what each of these two have accomplished.

By feats, Starlight has:
-Laser beams of unknown strength, weak enough to be completely blocked by Twilight’s shields but strong enough to break a layer of thin rock
-The cutie mark replacement spell
-Teleporting objects (not herself notably)
-Self-levitation
-Speech modification
-Temporal spell modification
-Manipulative streak, feat of a town of ponies
-A shield spell, able to create distance between herself and any threat that manages to get in her face
-A crystal prison spell, and magically powerful enough to break out of it
-Ability to plan and find a weakness

The time travelling is not a feat as it was not done under her own power. The modification of the spell is, however small or big the modification actually was.

Sunset’s feats are:
-A manipulative streak, feat of a high school of a different species
-Knowledge of the Elements of Harmony
-Teleportation, which is notably the only thing she has over Starlight
-Ability to plan and find a weakness
-Ability to maintain her strength and control despite having none of her magic

Her demon form is not a feat, nor is Daydream. But presumably knows how to perform the spells she used during those forms. IF we assume she does, she can add limited pyromancy as a feat and laser beams, and a very powerful magical grip, strong enough to break through decently thick wall of concrete.

If you consider the comics though, these are possible extra feats:
-Laser beams of unknown strength
-Growth spell of enormous(!) strength
-Knowledge of mind control

So as shown, it’s pretty clear that Starlight has the advantage over Sunset by accomplishments. The only absolute advantage Sunset has is that she’s been shown to still be powerful in some way even without any of her magic or even as a different, unfamiliar species, and can teleport herself, which Starlight might be able to do.

I still believe though, that Sunset can give of a hell of a fight to Starlight, depending on what the motive is, and depending on their state of character. If comic feats are true, then they each have a definite win condition (Starlight’s cutie mark replacement spell, and Sunset’s mind control spell). If they were to fight, it’s likely that neither will go for them immediately (Starlight never bothered with it in her fight with Twilight) and the fight will both of them trying to find a weakness in the other.

Assuming Sunset and Starlight have zero motive other than “I must defeat this mare” for the fight… A better motive would be, say, “I must impress Twilight”, but hey that’s just me!

Hmm. Well, this is headcanon territory, but I believe Sunset has more raw magical power than Starlight does. With this in mind, just like with her fight with Twilight, she will eventually discover she cannot beat Sunset head-on, and will instead use her self-levitation to temporarily flee and come up with an opening. Sunset, being more aggressive overall than Twilight, will pursuit relentlessly by teleporting. The fight would depend on who lets their guard down first. They can very quickly end it if either find an opening, they both have the power for that, and their win conditions.

But until Sunset gets better accomplishments as a pony, I don’t know how strong she really is. So for now, Starlight has the advantage.

I can’t speak for other Sunset fans, obviously, but I personally don’t look down on Starlight fans. Heck, I don’t even mind Starlight herself, all that much - her backstory is incredibly weak and her reformation… ill-considered, but I think she makes for a great villain.

It’s not debatable when the head writer said it is. I never understood why admitting it’s canon is a bad thing. It’s not like it’s going to impact the show, I think Jim Miller said something along those lines. Admitting it’s canon doesn’t mean scitwi or Sunset or whatever from the films will be on the show. Those are elements from their own series

Well what I was getting at was that Moondancer, Starlight Glimmer and Sunset Shimmer are all more or less variations on the question of “Why if Twilight was like [X] instead?

The point of my previous comment was that they are not clones of their mentors but are homages to them and share a few traits only to establish in the minds of the audience that one is connected to the other.

Not fact, just a way of looking at it if you have a more positive outlook.
