They retcon that “alien parasite” bit slightly in NMM’s FIENDship is Magic issue: she was the one who turned the Nyx shadowy in the first place.

My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

Wait, since comics canon has it that Nightmare Moon was really some sort of alien parasite, then does that mean that Luna is faking being NMM again? Or are the writers ignoring that bit of canon as inconvenient to the plot?
 
Or am I just really, really overthinking this?

My Little Pony - 1992 Edition

I suppose the idea is that Nighty will go back to Ponyville and try uniting the now-evil ponies under her command. They tell her to take a flying leap, she gets POed, beats them all unconscious. Then Celly clubs the weakened NMM from behind and everyone wakes up cured of the evil water (somehow).
 
Hopefully the comic will use a better idea than mine.

Regardless of the “idiot ball,” it’s a clever way to bring back this classic villain. Didn’t see it coming either frankly.
