It’s probably older than that, but Duck Soup may well have been the movie that truly immortalized it. (And yes, Duck Soup is my favorite Marx Brothers movie.)

Only we know where it originally came from.
We assumed they could only change into thins around their normal size, but the truth now is that they seem to have few limits at all, but are subject to fatigue or stress blowing their cover.
I don’t think there is a limit to their shapeshifting. None that I know of, anyhow.
Also, they can become rocks.
