Actually, the British spelling of “maneuver” (“manoeuvre”) is exactly the same as the French spelling of the same word. But considering the pronunciations, the American version seems far more natural. I had no idea the British version was that different.

One word which makes me cringe, and is likely contributing to enlarging a tumor in my head, is the British spelling of ‘maneuver’. That one is my kryptonite.

To make a picturesque language analogy, it looks like a Frenchman ate it, puked it up, and a Welsh Corgi came along and ate it (again)…but it gave him the trots.

Okay, I’m good now. :)

“Most Americans cannot even pronounce Caen correctly”
Most Europeans can’t say Bologna right either, but we let it slide.
And don’t even get me started on aluminum.

I don’t know how to do a phonetic transliteration of Russian for an English speaker….

I wouldn’t even attempt it. Far easier to simply point people to Wikipedia’s IPA page, and maybe the IPA for Russian.

Most Americans cannot even pronounce Caen correctly, so, though it may have a hint of prejudice, most Slavic pronunciations are probably out of reach. Nothing against my American brothers & sisters, but we’re not exactly known for being “worldly.” ;)
