Actually, for Sparkler/Amethyst Star, I’d prefer to think that as soon as RD/AJ told her about buckball, she started organizing the first Equestrian Buckball Tournament.

I could have sworn they said Buckball was new, and nopony in Ponyville seemed to know about it, so I doubt Rarity, or anypony else for that matter, had any real familiairty with the sport.

Also anything fragile, anything heavy, household chemicals of any variety, plants and mushrooms that have not been checked to make certain they’re fit for pony consumption, potion recipes, animals with sharp pointy parts, and fillies named Barbara. And electricity, if they use that anywhere in Equestria.

Honestly though, the unicorn doesn’t really have to move much. It’s just magic-eye coordination that they have to be good at. Snails didn’t even really move from the spot he was at.
 
Personally I like to think that she actually is a very avid buckball enthusiast because her dad is a sports coach or player himself. Applejack just didn’t want an extremely competitive Rarity playing because she knows how heated Rarity can get during Buckball

They were looking for the unicorn most fit to fill the position; hence the whole try-out thingy. Which I can’t help notice neither Rarity nor Twilight bothered to show up for. Some friends they are…. jerks…
 
The thing is, in their mind, Applejack and Rainbow already had the best possible candidates for the earth pony and pegasus positions: themselves. Pinkie and Fluttershy were mostly recruited just as filler for the unicorn try-outs.

It’s entirely possible, even likely, that they did invite her and she declined.
 
As for who wasn’t there why, I’ll repeat what I said in another thread:

Twilight drove herself crazy trying to figure out what position an alicorn would play, wondering if she’d have to play all three positions at once by herself because alicorns have the traits of all three pony races, worrying that her friends would be mad at her for showboating, etc., until Spike managed to convince her that she wouldn’t lose all her friends and get sent back to magic kindergarten.
Starlight actually tried to play all three positions at once before Applejack and Rainbow Dash could explain that they were already on the team, then left out of embarrassment once that was cleared up.
Rarity said she’d wait until they had indoor stadiums and fancier uniforms.

I was actually glad they apparently didn’t feel the need to say it out loud regarding Rarity.  
As for Starlight, probably either they still have some bad blood between them or she was not interested/available.
 
What I wonder about, would Twilight be disqualified?

  1. Tryouts. In this case, Rarity didn’t want to.  
  2. Rarity’s getting better, but it could still be a remnant of it being dirty that would make her not want to.
