Granted it’s definitely not the religion, but the culture which in the middle east is stuck around the 15th century, so religion has more control over the people, the government and the law, hence the government-imposed sharia law.
Blaming just Islam for the atrocities committed by Arabs in e.g. Norway is like blaming Christianity for the Ugandan ‘kill the gays’ law that is being proposed now.
Sure, the religion has something to do with it, but the blame is overwhelmingly on the ignorant, violent, socially backwards people who commit the atrocities that the violent, socially backwards parts of their religion tells them to do.
The same violent, socially backwards parts of our religion which we civilized 21st century people have learned to ignore. That’s why Christians don’t consider killing people for working on Sunday to be all right, nor do Muslims in the developed world.

However, the retaliation against the murders and protests that these 15th century Middle-Easterners commit is not islamophobia. It’s a retaliation of a 21st century people against the barbaric ways of a 15th century people. There is no religion involved here since Christianity is equally, if not more barbaric than Islam, yet we do not kill our gays, disobedient children, Sunday workers, or girls who go to school.
That’s the real difference, not religion.

You’re twats. So is the artist for covering up the hair of the pony who is often complimented on them. Almost anyone else would fit the role because of that fundamental reason.

I wasn’t trying to make a Courtier’s Reply, sorry if it sounded like one, although it seems that you are understandably misguided about the teachings of Islam, I’ll make two comments if you’re curious from an objective perspective:

  • Islam came about in a culture that was on the verge of social collapse due to corruption. Had Islam reflected the culture at the time, it would have been a polytheistic idol-worshiping religion that maintained virtually no social conduct or moral code (the exact opposite of what Islam really is).

  • The interpretation of the Quran often get’s twisted to sound like a very violent-laden belief system (to satisfy various political or Islamophobic agendas). If Islam really was a violence-profuse religion then every Muslim in America would be doing all they can to violently lash out at the “non-believers”. This doesn’t happen because Islam doesn’t say any of that. Islam does preach tolerance to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike, whether people practice tolerance is another issue entirely.

    The best way to learn about Islam simple for the sake of doing so is try to contact and ask a devote sunni Muslim. PLEASE do not believe the crap you read online, from what I could tell over half the sources are completely false.

    As far as the belief that Islam was spread by the sword, I’ll conclude with this:
    “I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place in Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and his own mission.” -Mahatma Gandhi

It honestly surprises me how this fandom gets into racial/religious arguments at the drop of a hat.

Because an artist chooses to see a background character in a cartoon as a hijab-wearing Muslim, you guys have to get into a deep argument about the fundamental aspects of Abrahamic religion. Yes, it’s been forced on Muslim women in the past. Today, it’s a choice. I see two or three women wearing them every day, and I’m living on a fairly liberal college campus. I doubt that they all feel obligated to wear the hijab.

So, yeah. It’s just a show, it’s just a drawing, it’s just an innocent artist with non-standard views. Chill.

Lesbians are forbidden in Christianity too, you know, but cares about christian gays.

Humanizations don’t are typically them as humans.. On Earth. With Earth religions.

@Background Pony
It also wouldn’t be super helpful for global toy sales.

And I don’t think Celestia actually raises the sun. It’s all done with mirrors light-bending magic.

@Goldenpwny
You correctly blast legalistic derivations of “oughts” from their “is”. I suggest religions are human-made, cultural constructs also, and do the same by codifying the local culture at the time of their creation.

I hope that wasn’t a Courtier’s Reply there. Sorry, I don’t have a spare lifetime to study both! I don’t think there is such a thing as a true religion either, so that side of it seems a little pointless.

So many suras compelling believers to withhold friendship from unbelievers, to slay and be slain in Allah’s name; telling them that unbelievers are always enemies, and that if emnity is shown to kill them wherever they are found. And pardon is given for this act because it was really Allah who did the killing! All very scary. Yet there shall be no compulsion in religion, no.
As ever, the self-contradictory nature of the core scriptures of the religion itself is what has led evil-minded types to spread them by the sword instead of simply excising the vicious parts. You can pick and choose verses to support your own beliefs, and always will: it’s the way the human mind works. Far wiser to try to be aware that you’re doing it and attempt a humanistic approach.

tl;dr - it’s funnier and makes you cry less if you read all the “lo!“s in English translations as “lol!”.

I thought that ponies believed in Celestia. So really having them be ANY religion doesn’t make much sense.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@BP
Yes, but the point is to peacefully spread them to those who are willing (also term you’re looking for is Abrahamic, includes all three major religions) a few that practice always forget that point and decide to start forcing people into it, which isn’t what those religions teach at all.

And honestly Christianity is the biggest offender there, the Roman-Catholic church insisted on “saving” entire races of people whether they wanted it or not, mostly because of the Pope’s greed, I’m no expert, but I’d say JC would be a bit miffed about that, just like Muhammad would be pissed about extreme fundamentalists.

All judeo-christian religions exist to spread them to those who aren’t.

The fact of the matter is, there are no true “Muslim” countries, no country on Earth follows the practices of Islam as they should be followed. Much of the laws you see are based on strong cultural norms, which are entirely separate from religion. Without a comprehensive understanding of Islam and Arabic culture, the line between the two becomes incredibly blurred.

With that being said, Islam dictates that woman should wear the hijab, but that, like other teachings of Islam, is a rule they have the right to follow or disregard. Forcing someone to do something (such as follow a religious practice) is against Islamic teachings (in Islam, one cannot force someone to follow a religious practice; the individual has the right to choose freely).

tl;dr: Many “Islamic” laws are in fact cultural-based and real Islam forbids forcing religious beliefs/practices upon others.

This pic doesn’t make much sense because Ponyville is basically a little ponified North-Western European village, and the scenario wouldn’t make sense unless it was Eastern Europe. And a helter-skelter is not a minaret. I rest my case.

@Bomber Ted
With you up to a point. Hijab is as you say less restrictive than niqab, burqa, whatever. And it can be and is glammed up to the hilt in urban centres in many Islamic countries by professional women wearers. It can seem comparatively forward-thinking then.

That choice you refer to may exist for a happy few in the upper few strata of society, but it most definitely does not for the rest of us. It’s not a free choice if one cannot choose not to without suffering threats, scorn or actual violence.

Generally I dislike bans, the free choice to wear hijab should be available. I also dislike pretending that restrictive practices are somehow chosen freely by those oppressed, or that they’re somehow cultural, with the implication that this magically puts them beyond outside criticism or the ability to change for the better. Let’s not go there, let’s not do the wooly-headed version of multiculturalism.
Background Pony #07A0
It doesn’t really make sense why they’re Muslim. I mean, Islam is a religion and not an ethnicity… Which wouldn’t be an issue if they weren’t depicted as lesbians here (since it’s something that’s forbidden in Islam).

In short the artist is basically saying, “I have clue what ‘Muslim’ really means!”
Background Pony #3A2E
Most muslim countries have laws against homosexuality and often the death penalty.

It’s not poorly drawn and uninteresting at all. If they were white you’d be calling this cute.

It’s a hijab, not a burka, its not restrictive, its a cultural article of clothing and optional in most countries except for the extreme fundamentalist ones, woman choose to wear them because it shows modesty.

V Because they have 4 fingers, it’s poorly drawn, it’s uninteresting and they look weird?
