Duck - "someone befriended them, saved them, coaxed them out of their shell, and showed them that sex is nothing to be afraid of. I’m kind of envious of that rape victim"

ponies still casually appraise her cutie mark and perceive it as a baker’s mark, so her parents aren’t that clueless. besides, if they had her spending her life doing nothing but preparing hot drinks, wouldn’t that be even worse?

one of the points of this comic is that you can rise above your lot in life, to achieve something more. it’s not about how parents are too stupid to figure out that you can’t bake hot chocolate.

it’s possible that in ponyland, bakers are the only ones who prepare hot drinks. like if in our world, she got a biscotti as a cutie mark, everypony would conclude she was destined to work in a coffee shop.

I don’t see why it has to be overlooked. o.O
Either way, she doesn’t like being just a baker.
Either way, her parents are oblivious idiots.

I think the fact that her cutie mark does suit her just makes the story better; It’s her parents’ fault alone, rather than being partly the fault of ‘the fates’.

Even if that’d make sense, which it doesn’t, I meant it’s not related to the kind of baking her family seems to want her to obsess with :P
Like, even if they wanted her to stick to her talent, she should be the one in charge of the coffee and other hot drinks - not helping them bake non-drink stuff.
For example, when she helps someone make a souffle later, with no indication of giving it a unique spin, that is just as much (or possibly more so) going against her talent as dress-making.

Well, not really.
The cutie mark is of a peppermint stick in a cup of what’s presumably mocha.
And she got it while deciding to try adding some peppermint to the drink.
No part of it is even baking related - it’s café related, but not baking - and it’s partly representative of her creative side.

The cutie mark suits her just fine.
Her parents are just oblivious idiots, and probably a bit narcissistic.

This is already a better origin story for Starlight Glimmer than the canon one.
