I think she’s just been completely defeated.
 
It’s like breaking a horse, or giving a person traumatic personality-changing ptsd. That’s probably a bit of what happened with her whole life’s work, love, ambition and dream collapsing around her, completely breaking her into a broken, sad filly that feels defeated, powerless and hopeless, only to receive a shocking mercy and kindness she did not expect, and nurtured and guided into rebuilding herself into a non tyrant pony. :q
 
Really, effectively, a part of her really did die. But it was a part that needed to. A weeded removed from her trunk, but left an imprint that is being nurtured back to health.
