Celestia, the older of the two, occupied the position of goddess of the sun, the light, and peace. Her objective from the very beginning was to unite all the tribes inside the territory of Equestria to strengthen them and try to reduce the constant attacks from the dragons and griffins, since her lovely ponies were their favorite meal, causing them to live in terror.
The youngest occupied the position of goddess of harmony, feeling incredibly impotent upon watching how her lands became desolate thanks to the chaos of the young and unstable planet, the continuous murders, and everypony demanding them both to end this horrible cycle of pain and fear one way or another.
Twilight knew that Celestia’s efforts were in vain, no matter if she could unite all these ponies in order to stop the dragons and griffins… They would never be a worthy opponent. They were too weak, lacked fangs, claws, and their intelligence wasn’t greater than their adversaries. They were simple prey. The only thing that could put a permanent stop to all that would be true harmony and amnesty between their races, and that responsibility fell solely upon the young goddess’s back.
Twilight, like every day, was found on her library. She had already read all the books about harmony that existed on the face of the earth, and none of them could give her a true solution. She felt hopeless, heartbroken; she wasn’t capable of bringing harmony anywhere, and not even her ponies knew how to stay together. She thought she was created for this purpose, and the only thing she had experienced to this moment was pure failure.
A light knock on the door took her out of her thoughts. She didn’t say anything, a sign for Celestia to invite herself inside and carry a blanket with her magic. Twilight always fell asleep on the middle of her studies and did not like leaving her library even for a well-deserved rest.
Celestia placed the blanket over Twilight’s body while she sat next to her, giving her a compassionate look.
“Twilight, how long has it been since you last slept?”
She looked away with a tired look. “I don’t know… I think three or four days. What day is it?”
“We are on fall’s 14th moon…”
“Hmmph! Don’t remind me of her again…“ The young mare cut her off with a small grunt upon remembering the other goddess.
“It’s been three years since she’s not given us any signs of life. She was supposed to help us with this problem… Or at least that’s what she promised us.” Twilight grumbled in annoyance. Celestia put a wing over her back to comfort the stressed empress, and said empress sighed and rested her head on the white alicorn’s neck in return. “I am sorry. I just don’t know what to do anymore… Every day, ponies die and wars do not cease. Peace accords in exchange for our lands are unsustainable, they ask for too much, and we’re keeping very little land to work with. Winter will be arriving soon and we may go through a period of hunger… We need to find a solution.”
She got up to go find another book. Celestia sighed, knowing there was not much she could do to help her; all her tries to get her away from her library always were in vain. Silently, she left, leaving the lavender mare alone.
