I would have used the theme from the animated Conan the Adventurer in that the Guardian equipment had a natural ability to detect changelings and, upon close proximity, undid their disguises, while a “killing blow” would instead entrap them in another dimension.
 
Spike would have armor that, upon contacting, would grow him to fit inside the armor to wear and, although powerful, would need the other guardians when they weren’t, say, laying siege to an entire hive.
 
… Ironically, I just discovered that Hasbro owns the rights to Conan the Adventurer.
 
Seriously, I’d have made Guardians of harmony basically be this story, just replacing the cast
