It doesn’t explain why no one notices before things go too far (also, why Quibble? I like the guy, but he feels out of place here). Honestly, a better choice would be Pinkie and Mr Cake, since she’s isolated, and could slug it off better, or Flutters, who’s even more so, and could detach herself from Dash, only for Dash to connect the dots just before (or after) it’s too late. You can even use Dash herself, since we don’t see her hang out with her family all that much, and seems to live by herself.

It doesn’t really matter if they know about the specific relationship; she has 2 black eyes and are covered in bruises and scratches. They know some pony is abusing her, or at the very least she’s enganging in some extremely reckless and dangerous activity. Applejack may be able to fool Apple Bloom with stories about walking into barn doors, but, considering she’s still living on the farm with them, Granny and Big Mac will know, and will push her to tell them.
 
But my point was mostly about how Big Mac is very often used as the over-protective jerk big brother in innocent, loving shippings (so far I’ve seen 3 fanfics with Soarin’ and 2-3 short comics with Caramel), yet always mysteriously stay silent in serious situations.
 
It’s your story, and you’re free to tell it however you want, I’m not disputing that. :)

But why? The Apples are a close family, and would notice something like this within a year. Honestly, they are the worst people to use in this scenario because of how close they are and how often they see each other makes it unrealistic that this would go on for this long. It’s like if Rarity abused Spike, and Twi didn’t notice.

It’s actually kind of sad, how Big Mac is often portrayed as an insensitive, over-protective jerk when it comes to regular, decent guys, but suddenly becomes Mr Oblivious when it’s about abusive assholes.

Yeah go way Applebloom.

I think that Big Mac would have figured it out by now, and either have Filthy arrested or broken at this point. Even Spoiled would have interrupted this, since Filthy is her main source of wealth.
