Unpopular opinion: I think whether they made Scootaloo an orphan or not would not have mattered as long it was a good story.
Word of Faust is nice, but I’m sure if you have a good idea and execute it right, then it can be good whether adhering to Fausts vision or not.
And honestly I think Faust would have been okay with Orphan Scootaloo if a great story came from it.
Background Pony #4C06
Canon is that Scootaloo DOES have parents who have very demanding jobs and do not often come to visit her and get involved in her life. So she lives most of the time with her Aunts Lofty and Holiday instead, who are a loving pair that care for Scoots a lot.

This is all in a MLP chapter book. I forgot the name but it was an issue of Ponyville Mysteries.

So yeah she doesnt really have a babysitter that shes constantly evading and thats about it. If someone still insists on Orphan Scoots then hey, more power to you dude. Orphanages do exist in Equestria and kid Sombra was taken into one when he was found lying outside in the snow ( FIENDship is Magic comic book ).

There is really no way to interpretation of this episode that let scoot’s have a good and supporting family, is there?

@Daneasaur
Discord was aware the entire time, but when twilight was cured from being turned to stone by a cockotrice, she didn’t remember a thing. It’s possible that Discord only kep his awareness because he is a spirit of chaos and pony don’t stay aware.

@Darth Sonic
Eyup. And considering just how bleak this comic was I’m wondering if Ted Anderson have a sever case of Holiday Depression.
CronoM

@Alexlayer
Indeed. While most comic stories are either not relevant, complete side stories, or scrapped ideas for episodes, like the closure episode for Babs, I’ve noticed they’ve tried to set certain status quo’s on characters to be constant in different semi-canon materials, such as Cadence’s ascension and her connection to the crystal empire.

I phrased it like that simply due to Sunset’s young age during the time she was raised in Equestria. Family drifting apart into adulthood is rather tame…in comparison to having no close memories of her fam when she was a kid :( That’s pretty sucky no matter how you look at it.

@Alexlayer
Agreed, they really need to explore this relationship with Sunset and Celestia. While is dislike that EG mini-series 3 has the premise it has, at least its reconnecting the MLP:FiM continuity with the EG, even to the point of us seeing Pony Sunset again, if just briefly before giving hopeless glimmer an earth tour. And to be fair, I don’t want Sunset and Celestia’s reunion to be rushed in a mini-series episode.

Yes.

@CronoM
So, you made me go back and read that one again. I generally take it as a rule to not take the comic as canon, but I do welcome them for potential headcanons and so so. That said, one thing I noticed is that what you said isn’t exactly accurate. All that Sunset says is that she “wasn’t very close to her family”, but no such details as her parents not being interested in raising a kid. Still, it does say a lot about Sunset’s upbringing and her potential view on Celestia…

Plus, I’ve also read one too many fanfics involving Sunset actually being Celestia’s daughter or viewing Celestia as the closest thing as a mother figure, or outright wanting her as a mother, and I love the chemestry and potential of that angle. This is why I really want to see Sunset and Celestia meet again someday in canon, something needs to be made out of this.
CronoM

@Alexlayer
Sunset talking about her folks in the annual EG’s comic. Human AJ started talking about spending holidays with the family and asked Sunset if Equestria had an equivalent, and Sunset said it did but since her parents were never interested in raising a child, she never got the full holiday experience. A surprisingly sobering comment for an MLP story, but not entirely unexpected from Sunset.

And well, like all comics its only mildly canon unless the show disregards it since their licensed stories, but it does explain why leaving the entire dimension at such a young age only came down to her relationship with Celestia.
CronoM

@Sirius-Face
That’s pretty much the take away.

Confirmed or not, either she’s an orphan… or if she has parents, she might as well not have any.

Actually in the semi-canon material, canon or not, Sunset actually has that same situation as the latter, parents that didn’t really care for her that much; making her relationship with Celestia as close, AND as potentially volatile, as a mother and daughter relationship.

I can name a few right in the MLP verse.

The comics, King Sombra was to murder his teacher/mentor for keeping his past hidden and hiding why he was violently ill to the point of near death once a year. Hasbro said “you can do whatever you want BUT you need to make sure that she is not dead”.

The result was he turned her to stone, then shattered her. This was how he was to kill her, but he had to say “she wasn’t really dead”. Discord mentioned that stone imprisonment DOES NOT induce sleep, you’re VERY aware of EVERYTHING going on around you.

So let me paint this: Sombra turned a unicorn to stone, then shattered her into a million tiny fragments and scattered her across the globe. Fragments that COULD be brought back together, but “no one would do that” and were promptly forgotten for over 1,000 years.

One could argue that Discord can handle it due to being basically immortal anyway, or that he’s already slightly insane, or it’s “expected” he’d be loony from it, but why do things someone expects?

AM has altered me for his own peace of mind, I suppose. He doesn’t want me to run at full speed into a computer bank and smash my skull. Or hold my breath till I faint. Or cut my throat on a rusted sheet of metal. There are reflective surfaces down here. I will describe myself as I see myself:

I am a great soft jelly thing. Smoothly rounded, with no mouth, with pulsing white holes filled by fog where my eyes used to be. Rubbery appendages that were once my arms; bulks rounding down into legless humps of soft slippery matter. I leave a moist trail when I move. Blotches of diseased, evil gray come and go on my surface, as though light is being beamed from within.

Outwardly: dumbly, I shamble about, a thing that could never have been known as human, a thing whose shape is so alien a travesty that humanity becomes more obscene for the vague resemblance.

Inwardly: alone. Here. Living under the land, under the sea, in the belly of AM, whom we created because our time was badly spent and we must have known unconsciously that he could do it better.

At least the four of them are safe at last.

AM will be all the madder for that. It makes me a little happier. And yet AM has won, simply he has taken his revenge.

I have no mouth. And I must scream.

Uh, did you even read what I said? I didn’t even say that Midichlorians were the Force, but that an explanation of where the Force came from was bioscience in the prequels and faith in the original trilogy. In a drama-focused narrative like Star Wars, the Force never really needed an explanation, as it’s power (or lack thereof) was determined by the needs of the story, and not the needs of the setting.

It’d honestly be kind of neat to see a decent, well-adjusted, and good person like Scoots have come from a bad or broken family instead of how every show ever seems to take the “bad upbringing = villain or psychopath” route.

… Are you fucking serious about the Force thing? Midichlorians were NEVER the Force. NEVER. They were just a dumb and inconsistently utilized method of detecting power-levels with blood tests, and an explanation (again, not a very well executed one) why some can use magic while others can’t.

Because of course Faust could’ve done what Moore, Roddenberry, Metzen, Piller, Lucas, Hudson, and Sakamoto and not fuck up the ending. Tell me again how a hack with only one successful project under their belts could do what others with far more experience and accolades could not.

Maybe we’d rather cling to her vision than see it violated by the suits!

1:
And George Lucas said that The Force is actually bioscience instead of faith, and Chris Metzen said that Jim Raynor still loved Kerrigan even after she killed a lot of people he cared about, and Casey Hudson said that the Reaper threat was basically someone spilling coffee on their computer after unleashing the singularity from it.

Remember people, the creators can do no wrong!

2:
What really gets me about the whole “creator can do no wrong shtick” is how whenever other examples are brought up of creators who did heaps of wrong, people treat them as anomalies, even though “creators fucking up” is the rule and not the exception. Lucas, Roddenberry, Moore, Piller, Hudson, Metzen, and others were all there to the end when their creations turned to shit; yet people give a free pass to the likes of Faust and Whedon, even though there is no proof whatsoever that them staying on would’ve meant everything turned out alright.

3:
>”Faust’s original worldbuilding lore is begging for a merciful death”
>dismissing the totally reasonable feedback of an upstanding member of the brony community.
>totally reasonable feedback
>reasonable feedback

Nice try, but Murrison’s comment basically amounts to “you’re destroying Faust world building.” period. How is this reasonable feedback? Where’s the because? Where’s the what? Where’s the how? As I’ve stated before, how does yet another alicorn fuck up Faust’s worldbuilding? We haven’t been told what an ’alicorn’ is, nor where they come from, nor how many of them are, nor what their capabilities are.

Also, I really hate the built-in implication to this kind of ’criticism’: That being that the creator knows best. Why? Answer me the following:

Who ruined George Lucas’s worldbuilding for Star Wars in the prequels?

Who ruined Damien Lindelof’s worldbuilding for Lost in the latter seasons?

Who ruined Ronald D. Moore’s worldbuilding for the reimagined Battlestar Galactica in seasons 3 and 4?

Who ruined Casey Hudson’s worldbuilding for Mass Effect in the sequels?

Who ruined Chris Metzen’s worldbuilding for Starcraft in Starcraft 2 and its expansions?

Goodbye Ponk Pie Hat
Poor Ms Faust. I’d be bored now. You’d be bored. It doesn’t have to be creepy, but I bet loads of it is.

Anyway, that’s drama. I thought that the consensus fanon was that Scootaloo was a foundling, not an orphan. That’s less tragic, right?

@Background Pony #04ED
It allows for her growing up in an orphanage and then (I hope) being adopted by really loving parents. It can be a bad place or turn into a good situation, and there’s reasons why loads of characters in literature are orphans or foundlings: it’s a flexible start for a child character with in-built pathos.

Incidentally, a trajectory like a certain character from G1 isn’t out of the question. Back when they didn’t mess around and just went “yep. Adopted, no biggie” (but still, “yep, helping out at her old orphanage today, draw your own conclusions”)

@Sirius-Face
There’s lots in this, simply because many of the target audience won’t have ideal upbringings at the time they watch the show. Having relatable characters who don’t and won’t ever get the ideal fast track to princessdom or wonderbolthood, but who are still capable of love and wonder and making the best out of their deal seems like a very good idea.

Thank you for the exact quote.

Yeah, the actual quote is, as said, super vague.

@Background Pony Number 17
I was just thinking how many times, for writers having to a void the dreaded “D” word, the actual situation brought up instead is FAR worse than if death WAS the answer.

Still, nothing says that the writers won’t make an episode about Scoots trying to reconnect with her family, though it most likely isn’t going to happen with how they have been following her.

@Darth Sonic
Nope, sorry to disappoint.
