It’s true that the author makes them a bit of a strawman (Strawponies?), but I prefer to think that they have their reasonable motives beyond just been plotholes to her only child.
After all, we are in the middle of the comic and it’s better not to draw assumptions too quickly.
Even without the watchtower, if it isn’t helping and is causing problems fix it.
Even when my family tried to get me into our traditions I just asked why? So I’m not the kind of person to take things at face value by design, and by this point these two are actively trying to force their child into the path they want. No going around it, and they are being absolutely horrid about it regardless.
They lack effort and reason far beyond it simply being tradition.
Maybe with our vision of traditions and from the XXI century watchtower we can say that. But in the past, tradition was the way to go, and few dared to go outside of the norm. After all, if that worked in the past, it could work now too.

If they’re going to pull the ‘you do your talent and nothing else’ card, it should be ‘you do hot drinks and misc. snacks’, not ‘you bake’ :P

Anyone to blind to see their child in that condition over a tradition deserves a swift kick to the head.
Maybe it’s tradition. That’s the way their parents did it, and their parents, and so on. They might not even grasp the concept of being anything other than what your cutie mark shows.
