@Starswirl
What’s not to understand. It’s easier and quicker to use Dash, a four letter word, than Rainbow, a seven letter one. Especially when typing, and that goes double if typing on a phone.
Edit: Also, Gilda has always called Rainbow Dash ‘Dash,’ so we probably got it from her.
My poll was about what the fans on that board called her in general (and it included the full name as a choice in the poll). I also noticed that in general conversation, fans are more likely to write “Dash” then either “Rainbow Dash” or “Rainbow”.
Fans just tend to refer to her as “Dash” more then “Rainbow”, so this is reflected in fan works. I had a poll on what nickname fans use on a small My Little Pony board and not even one person voted for “Rainbow”.
@PonyPon
They’re a rare occurance. I believe the first time anypony called Rainbow Dash “Dashie”, for example, was in episode 20. They stand out when they happen because they happen so rarely.
@Ranch
I understand. The show often shortens her name too. Almost always to “Rainbow”, though. Gilda used just “Dash” except for one time, that’s true, and I don’t mind her doing so in the comic either. It’s really just a detail that’s rattling in the back of my head. Like I said, it’s like if Pinkie was called “Pinks” all the time or everypony called Rarity “Rares”.
Not really annoyed, plus we’re dealing with limited speech bubble space here. Might as well drop “Rainbow”, we still know who the character is talking about.
By the way, anypony else a little annoyed that she’s called “Dash” over and over when it’s only done very rarely in the show, even her close friends saying “Rainbow” way, way more often? It’s like every character calling Pinkie Pie “Pinks”.
Finally a character is being pro-active with solving a problem.
Okay so even though Dumbbell knows the truth, he can’t prove anything without a confession. Soooo what can pawssibly possibly go wrong?
Gilda can out of nowhere be a totally unsympathetic troll even after Rainbow Dash lays everything out on the table. I honestly feel like Firefly should be the one confronting Gilda, because while Gilda probably hates her too, it’s not as bitter as a broken friendship with Dash. Also some of this is kind of Firefly’s fault.

Weird. Then again, “Rainbow” is used so often, it’s hardly a nickname anymore. Again, like with Pinkie or Twilight.

Really, I thought variations on Dash were more common.

That is if Gilda will even listen to her, but I’m not holding my breath.
