I don’t like using absolutes like this, but here it’s warranted. This is not something that is up for debate, this is a known and verifiable fact. Celestia is not white, in much the same vein as Rarity is not white, they are both off-white in the show regardless what any writer or anyone else has to say about the matter.
Also, since I forgot to mention, I did source all of the screen caps from the MLP wikia. I was partially tempted to go and actually check some of the earlier episodes myself to see if the inconsistencies were caused by caps from different sources, but I decided that this wasn’t necessary as the results gathered more than prove my point despite the inconsistencies.
Another thing I neglected to mention was that the swatches were obtained by sampling a 5x5 area of color, as to reduce the chance of picking pixels that happened to be discolored by image compression or things such as that.
Other than that, feel free to ignore me. For what it’s worth, I Was Never Here
I guess that’s possible.
It’s not super important either way though, as regardless of whether or not she had a darker toned coat then this very clearly and definitively demonstrates that she’s supposed to be pink and that she is pink now in a way that anyone can try and replicate on their own and get the same results.
Well… not underestimate compression.
S1E23 – she was small in that scene? Which means the compression will be all over the body, and can explain the purple color.
S2E24 – ears are too small and detailed, which could explain the purple color
Actually, I showed in the picture where I took the color swatches from with the arrows.
As you can see, I made sure to take it from a variety of different locations to make sure that I was getting the same results regardless of where I sampled from, and as I mentioned in the description I took samples as an average of a 5x5 area of pixels as opposed to a single pixel. So the chances of me catching a discolored pixel are very small
The video is compressed, which affects the colour. Large areas are the only one with the correct color.
(This is why h.265 compressed to the same file size as h.264 interest me)
I didnt know

It’s like magic%%
Oh I just know that because when I use my drawing program on my tablet it says it RGB or hex format.
so many colors
I would call you “egghead!”, but it would be calling me nerd too :v
RGB!!!! Yay!
True, but for all but the most pedantic of purposes, they’re both white.
– A Confirmed Pedant
If you really want to be really technical, you can say that celestia is %33.3… RED, %32.6… GREEN and %33.3… BLUE
Looking at Rarity and Celestia side-by-side confirms that both are off-white.
Rarity’s coat has a faint bluish hue; Celestia’s has a faint pinkish one.
Right, that’s why all three of them have the the weird sclera color, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to tell where the edges of their eyes are.
And that’s actually the reason Rarity isn’t pure white, as far as I’m aware. They didn’t want her eyes and coat to have the same shade. Though that wouldn’t be an issue for Celestia since she’s got that thick black eyeliner built into her character model, so she’s just pink for the sake of being pink.
Actually, if she was supposed to be white originally like some models would suggest, maybe that’s why she had the eyeliner in the first place.
Really makes you think…
Fancy Pants and Shining Armor are pure white too.
I hated that dress meme debacle.
Some people saw a black dress with blue and some people saw a gold dress with white, I just saw a really really bad picture of a dress. I still fail to understand how they could get a picture where the contrast was THAT bad…
That being said though, it’s exactly the reason I made sure to do the control on Rarity and Blueblood here. It’s especially convenient that Blueblood is just stark white since it shows that in the context of the show’s animation that they deliberately chose not to make Celestia stark white.
Keep in mind that people are sometimes bad at seeing colors. For instance the Checker Shadow Illusion, the ‘Grid’ Illusion, this gradient illusion, that olde Dress meme, etc.
And I think some people can tell the difference between the white of Celestia’s eyes and that of her coat. So saying both were ‘white’ might not make sense…
I guess that’s something you would have to ask most people
No, what I meant is that white is a mix of colors and due to the limitations of computer monitors and all light sources and colors in this universe the mix will always contain a little more of some colors and therefor you could argue that it isn’t white and in fact white does not exist. But at some point the difference is so small that it doesn’t matter. Technology might be able to differentiate better than the human eye but why don’t you just call something white if most people see it as white?
Edited
As I stated in the image, there were controls here. Prince Blueblood is actually pure white with no color.
People call white what looks white and Celestia looks white.
