Except FlutterCord didn’t become canon. Or did you simply misspell “becomes?” If that’s the case, then eat what words? I’d still not be wrong. I didn’t say Fluttershy and Discord don’t have romantic feelings for each other, I said that the evidence thus far is not proof positive of romantic interest. It simply means the characters have a vested interest in each other, which does not automatically translate to wanting to date each other. If they did end up becoming an item, that wouldn’t change the entire foundation of character interaction.

Yeah, I’m not saying the ships are invalid or anything, I just always find it weird when you get these people who assume these characters are an item just because they spend a lot of time together. I’m not talking about the people who just ship them – that’s fun – but the people who are authentically convinced that the characters are in a relationship, so whenever someone draws art of one or both of those characters with other characters, their first mind is to bring up the ship they’re convinced has all but been canonized.

Hey, I would have been happy to leave it at my first comment. Not my fault some people decided they’d like to debate it. Admittedly, it is my fault that I enjoy a good discussion. I agree that shipping is inevitable with characters with history – and sometimes characters who have never even interacted with one another as we saw with FlutterMac and similar ships. As for if it can be interpreted romantically, you can interpret that stuff no matter what. There’s no real rule to it.

Just as context for my particular nextgen and the discussion over the joke about Starlight getting mad - in my verse, Sunburst originally WAS with Starlight, they had a daughter, then things didn’t work out. When Sunburst got together with Twilight, Starlight took it as a betrayal by her friend and basically flipped her shit. So for MY particular context, yes, Starlight wasn’t real happy about this.

No, I’m using something called common sense. Have you never gotten jealous when a friend spent more time with someone else than they did with you without being romantically interested in them? You’re making extreme assumptions based on the lack of total indifference. I mean the episode in which Discord was jealous even made a point of Fluttershy explaining to Discord that they can both have other friends, which he seemed totally lost upon until she pointed out he could find other friends to talk about chaos magic with.

It can be interpreted as romantic interest in the same way Twilight’s relationship with Celestia can be interpreted as romantic (indeed many fans do interpret it that way) – the problem is that’s a case of people taking these things and assuming they are stone-solid proof of romance. I mean for years everyone swore up and down Big Mac and Cheerilee had a crush on each other, then Big Mac went and started dating the mare from that other town. Thing is, everyone assumes any two characters who are not indifferent to each other are romantically attached, and now we got distressed shippers drawing sad Cheerilee art all over the place.
 
I’m not outright dissing the StarBurst ship, mind you - it’s just as believable as any other ship you can put those particular characters in, I’m just saying it’s not really implied quite as much as fans of the ship think it is.

She wasn’t upset because Sunburst was with other ponies, she was upset because she was afraid her childhood friend had outgrown her - best symbolized when she used magic to make them both foals and stick them with their favorite childhood game. I mean the implication is that she was being creepy just with a friendly attachment, can you imagine how creepy it’d be if she was in love with him?

The problem is you’re assuming clinging is romantic attachment. Discord was jealous because Fluttershy was his only friend, and Starlight was upset because, as I said, she was afraid her childhood friend had outgrown her. Shipper fans just tend to read too deeply into everything.
