Description

Sky high. The wind through his mane, the adrenaline rushing through his veins, the crowd below cheering for him…Soarin was never much of a show-off, but he had to admit performing in Wonderbolts shows gave him a thrill like no other. And best of all, his wife was there, among the faces in the crowd, cheering the loudest. She would be ready to join him in the skies as soon as their unborn child arrived. Soarin was just at the peak of his routine when suddenly…

“SOARIN!!!” A familiar cry rang out from the audience.

Soarin paused for a moment and looked down. There was Rainbow Dash, with what seemed to be a pained expression on her face. He swooped down with the rest of the formation before giving Spitfire a glance of apology and leaving to join his wife.

“Crash! What’s wrong?” Soarin asked in a panic.

“Ngh…” Rainbow grunted, gripping her swollen abdomen. “Soarin, it’s time!”

“What?” Soarin couldn’t believe his ears. “Are you sure? You’re not due for another two months!”

Rainbow felt another stab of pain. “Yes! I know! Just get me to the hospital!”

With that, Soarin picked up his wife and rushed in the direction of Canterlot hospital, praying that she and their foal would be okay.

“It’s almost there! You can do it!” Soarin held Rainbow’s hoof, trying to be encouraging when he was nearly scared out of his wits at the scene before him.

Rainbow gripped Soarin’s hoof like a vice and let out one final scream as her newborn foal made its way out. Immediately, the midwife grabbed it and started cleaning it off before handing it to the parents. “It’s a girl!”

Rainbow took the foal into her arms, looking down on her with pride. Out of the corner of her eye, she could swear Soarin was crying a little. However, there was one problem…

“She isn’t breathing!”

Just like that, the foal was whisked away. Rainbow and Soarin could only watch helplessly as their baby girl was whisked away to intensive care.

“There’s gotta be something you can do!” Rainbow paced around the doctors office frantically. She knew what the doctor was going to say, but she didn’t want to hear it.

“I’ve told you, Mrs. Dash, we’ve exhausted all options,” the doctor informed solemnly. “It has been over a week and she is making no improvements. We’ve tried everything we could, but it is no use. We need these resources for foals with an actual chance at survival. I’m sorry, but it would be best if you said your goodbyes now.”

“Dash, he’s right. There’s nothing we can do.” Soarin reached out a hoof to comfort her. She immediately slapped it away.

“KEEP TRYING!” Rainbow screamed, angry tears welling up. “I can’t lose my kid! Not like this!” She stood over the doctor and glared.

The doctor sighed and put down his clipboard. “Fine. We will give her 24 hours. But if her vital signs do not improve, we will have no choice but to cut life support. Is that clear?”

Rainbow sat down as if a heavy weight was dropped on her. 24 hours…her baby had only 24 hours to live and then it was all over. “Y-yes, sir…” As Soarin sat by her side, she covered her face as the tears started flowing.

Suddenly, Rainbow heard a familiar scream in the distance. “Rarity?”

Rarity knew this day was coming. Her son was coming just on time! She and Fancy couldn’t wait for their little Royal Splendor to be born, but first she had to get through the excruciating pain.

Apparently her labor was lasting longer than normal. Through the loopiness of her epidural, Rarity heard voices.

“The foal is not moving! The birthing process is at a standstill!”

“You must do something! My wife and son are at stake here!”

“I assure you, your wife will be just fine. We will do everything we can to save your son too, but we need to conduct a cesarean section first.”

“F…Fancy…” Rarity uttered faintly. What was going to become of her and her foal?

“Hush, my dear. It will be alright.” Fancy Pants held Rarity’s hoof and looked into her eyes as a sensation of numbness and drowsiness overtook her.

The next few hours were a heavily-medicated blur, but the next thing Rarity remembered was a tiny white colt being whisked out of the room. She whimpered in protest a little before passing out.

Rarity slowly rose out of her drowsy stupor. By her side was Fancy, having a serious and hushed discussion with the doctor.

“F-Fancy, what is the matter? Where is our son?” Rarity asked, fearing the worst.

Fancy held her hoof. “Rarity, dear, our son…had some complications. The umbilical cord was tangled and…he may not make it. He is in intensive care right now.”

“What?! This can’t be!” Rarity tried to sit up before being softly pushed back by her husband.

“Do not fret, dear. The doctors will get this taken care of. I have full confidence in them,” Fancy uttered soothingly as she laid back to sleep off her medication.

“Wake up, dear! We have some excellent news!” Rarity awoke to Fancy’s smiling and hopeful visage.

“W-what? Did something happen?” Rarity sputtered awake, suddenly remembering where she was and why she was there. “Our son…”

“He will live after all!” The doctor walked in with a clipboard. “His vital signs are improving tremendously! You may see him now, follow me.”

Rarity briskly got out of bed and trotted after the stallion, eager to meet her son for he first time.

“Rainbow Dash?”

“Rarity?”

The two mares found themselves standing over the same incubator. After a moment of staring at each other in disbelief, Rarity broke the silence. “Rainbow Dash, I never expected to find you here! I thought you weren’t due for another two months!”

“Yeah, me too,” Rainbow tried to shift the attention away from the trauma she went through. “What about you? I thought your kid was gonna come out just fine!”

Rarity cleared her throat awkwardly. “There were some…complications. But never mind that; how did our children end up in the same incubator?”

“All of the incubators were full,” The doctor butted in. “Studies have shown that newborn infants benefit from physical contact, so we placed the colt with the filly who needed it the most. Both of their vital signs improved dramatically; I believe they’ve saved each other!”

Rarity beamed with joy. “My stars, what a miracle!”

“Yeah!” Rainbow Dash agreed. “Y’know, I bet these kids will grow up to be pretty awesome friends.”

Rarity smirked, already with a plan in mind. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they are destined to be!”
