A picture can get 1000 upvotes and not a single comment but, you’re saying thats okay because blind praise of a work is okay but blind dislike is not okay. I don’t really agree with that.

Never said that. The thing is, upvotes serve more of a purpose than downvotes do. They provide a better indicator of a picture’s popularity than downvotes provide an indicator of an images unpopularity. I wouldn’t even call it praise either, it’s just a tally of how people people liked it, which is sometimes more a matter of exposure than actual quality. Also, I use my likes as a second favorites list, to indicate images I like but that I don’t love. Images I wouldn’t mind seeing again but that aren’t good enough to have on a list of favorite images. I suppose removing both would only be fair though.

The main problem is the lack of better alternatives, though. Most comments are not particularly helpful in terms of quality, although occasionally an interesting comment or discussion comes by… that’s typical of art sites though, I think, even if I think Derpibooru has a bit of a problem with worthless or outright unhelpful comments.

Again, I guess I’m used to Fimfiction where there’s at least more to comment on. I guess most people don’t articulate how exactly they like pictures beyond “I like it.”

I suppose they say the place would become a hugbox because a majority of this site’s users are too lazy to leave a comment. A picture can get 1000 upvotes and not a single comment but, you’re saying thats okay because blind praise of a work is okay but blind dislike is not okay. I don’t really agree with that. We should either have it both ways or none at all. So get rid of upvotes and downvotes and force people to leave comments to explain how they feel. In the end that is much more valuable and constructive for artists.

But that’s not going to happen since most people don’t bother to leave a comment either way. So I see the upvote/downvote system as short-hand for how much a picture I drew is appreciated or not appreciated by the population. I draw a specific ship that a lot of people hate. When I first drew it, I’m pretty sure the downvote count was pretty big in relation to the upvote count. It is satisfying for me to see that downvote ratio grow smaller and smaller each time I submit a picture, as I assume that means my skills are increasing.

Trust me, I’d much rather have more comments on a picture than upvotes or downvotes, but like I said, most people just aren’t going to bother.

What BG said. Real feedback comes from comments, not downvotes, which are almost always so few that they don’t mean anything. I’d be more concerned about instances where anyone with legitimate feedback gets talked down to, as I’ve seen happen. Sometimes people seem to think that a comment section should be nothing but praise for the artist or the work, and say “if you don’t like it, filter it” - which means it’s rare for there to be any useful negative feedback.

I’m normally not in favor of having only downvotes, but the reason I like an upvote/downvote ratio is because in theory it give indications of what proportion of people actually dislike an image. But since people are encouraged to hide/filter an image rather than downvoting it, downvotes here do not serve that purpose, and with the exception of very low-quality art or things the vast majority of the fandom dislikes, a downvote count tells you nothing except that a few people took the time to downvote it for some ambiguous reason or no reason at all.

And on other sites, I tend to ignore downvote counts, as they may or may not line up with my own preferences. And speaking as a creator, I ignore all downvotes on my work that did not come with accompanying comments, since if they couldn’t be bothered to do more than click a button, than their opinions are not worth considering.

None of this means I actually favor removing the downvote, but I don’t consider it sacred or anything. Much of my involvement in “the day downvote died” was just me taking issue with downvote supporters whose reasoning I found stupid, like saying the place would become a “hugbox” without explaining how, or even what a hugbox was or why it’d be a bad thing.

How? People can still tell the artist what they did wrong. What does a red arrow have to do with being a hugbox?

I generally just downvote images I find particularly distasteful, which is a narrower category than it sounds like. It really boils down to a case-by-case basis, though one case involved a clop image of an OC of a real (and married) person.

I also downvote all images complaining about downvote being removed, to be ironic. I didn’t favor its removal - I think it’s okay to have - but I got sick of the people complaining about how the admins were trying to turn the site into a “hugbox” and other people with stupid reactions.

Downvoting should be as much right as upvoting the way I see it, people say that if you don’t like the content you should just filter tag it, that is valid way to improve your browsing experience but no excuse to forbid downvoting something for your own reasons.

Normally I just downvote bad anthros because I’m a feral person however If the anthro or humanization is good I can still enjoy it so filter tagging ain’t an option but sometimes some anthro are just terrible with only selling point being stuff like over-sized breasts and what not.

Indeed. I’ve been using the hide option more and more, since apparently if there’s an image you don’t like, you’re supposed to hide it rather than downvote it. Though, that means that an upvote+downvote sum isn’t a reliable indicator of how popular an image actually is. …Which is leading me to think way too much on the implications and effects of the downvote and its use. I’ll save that for later…

Point is, I wasn’t in favor of removing the downvote, but the ensuing drama just confused me as to what the proper use of it was. Hide is unambiguously useful though.

At this point I actually appreciate the hide option. Just not at the expense of the downvote.

Better no to post any thing if you’ll just reinforce rudeness, some people still believe moderators should be polished on their replies ;/

I rarely use her myself. Apparently downvotes are supposed to be use to judge artistic quality and not subject matter, but… I almost never find cause to downvote because of art quality alone.
