It wasn’t retconned. It was an alternate timeline that Garrosh went. The timeline we are all familiar with since Warcraft 3 still exist.

drinking of the demon mannoroth’s tainted blood, the orc grom hellscream cursed himself and his entire race to be forever slaves to mannoroth and his unquenchable blood lust. after many long, bloody wars that decimated his people and earned them the ire of all other races, grom was captured. an army of sorcerors bent their arcane powers to temporarily seal his blood curse, and restore his free will. he proceeded to find mannoroth, rip him a new one, and in killing the demon the blood curse was ended for all orcs, so grom hellscream could finally rest in peace.
 
…then the whole series got retconned, and this time grom knew of the threat posed by mannoroth, before drinking his blood. grom pretended he was going to drink it, but set up siege weapons in an ambush at the site of mannoroth’s coming. then grom poured out the cup in disgust, and proceeded to rip mannoroth a new one.
 
so on a scale of 1-10, how awesome would it be if friendship is magic got retconned like this? I’m thinking 11.
